Just a quick question as I hope my mates are winding me up - we had to travel to Bedford today and went from M6 down A14 past Kettering to A6 - Does anyone know if the A14 round Kettering is 60 mph - there are national speed limit sign's but no other limit's signed - if it's 60 I've been done 70 OK

National Speed Limit is 70 on dual carriageways and motorways - "not a lot of people know that".
|
As the A14 along here is all dual carriageway, I've always assumed that it's all 70mph. However, I've a recollection that my Tomtom has told me (I trust mistakenly!) that there's a bit along here that's 60mph. Maybe this is how the question could have originated?
Whilst I admire much of what the Tomtom does, it would not be capable of answering 'Mastermind' questions on the subject of speed limits!

If it's got NSL signs it's National Speed Limit - have we got to the point when drivers take sat nav data in preference to road signs?
|
In the past seven years of using the A14 about that stretch, I have never known it as as 60mph route. Keep to within 75mph indicated on the speedo and you wont get flashed either.

No. But it can make you think twice when it is at odds with your own perception of the situation.

I live in the vicinity of where you are talkng about.
I think whats happening is that the camera warning system is picking up static and mobile sites that are on some of the roads and junctions that cross the A14.
I know my own system picks them up and of course it displays the limit of the road its on.
However the A14 is national limit from M6 to A1.
Be careful on A14 between Huntingdon and Cambridge though that whole stretch is average scamera covered.

Thanks for replies -as it was a dual carriage way I was sticking to the 70 mph limit but a mate following me said it was 60 - - ruined my day thinking I had got a fine -(it was the Truvelo I was worried about on the bend)- but on return journey all I saw was national speed limit sign's and nothing to say it was down to 60 so I can assume they were winding me up and I must admit they made a good job of it - my snooper is only the basic so doesn't show speed limits.
Thanks again Dave

Similar thing happens on the southbound A130 just north of the junction with the A127, gave me quite a start the first time I came through there with the sat-nav on. I was doing a, I thought, rightly, a legal 70 but the sat-nav went barmy telling me of a 30 mph camera and pinging like crazy to tell me I was over limit. After a few nervous glances I realised that I'd crossed over a bridge and there was a 30 camera on the section of the local road under the bridge.

Drive this stretch of the A14 most every day...both ways jct 13-3, 3-13. It is most definately a 70mph national speed limit...your mate is wrong. I drive past that camera every day at an indicated 70-75mph. No problems.
Oh and I have never, ever, ever, ever seen a 'safety' camera van on that stretch of the A14 although legend has it that there is one about from time to time.

All dual carriageways are 70mph. unless otherwise signed.

I've seen them several times but not for the past 12 months (which means they're due) they sit on the flyover at Rothwell. In the dip which gets your speed up both ways...due credit for maximizing profit.

Big sighs of relief. :-))

Is any sat nav unit very accurate in this respect? I'm guessing the answer is no because they all get their data from one or two sources.
