Amusing experience at dealers - top turkey
This tickled me.

Just nipped out in my lunch break to get a PX figure on the Veccy and a figure for 150 bhp diesel Signum. It's a large national franchise, selling only VX at this particular outlet.

Sat down with salesman to get some details. Gave home address.

Salesman: Now, West Midlands? Is that in Birminghamshire
Me. Erm, I don't think so. West Midlands IS the County....

He went to enter my reg number wrong and thus thought I drove a bio-fuel SRi. Forgot my first name - it only has 3 letters. Entered my surname wrong. Had to consult a colleague when the computer didn't recognise my address (who did actually have a working brain and remembered me from when I purchased there last time - fair play). Told me that my car has an alarm, because I have a remote 'blipper'. I told him that was to just open the doors. He insists it has an alarm.

Can't give me a PX price. Will call me back in 30 mins, despite the car being a 30 sec walk from his desk.

It's surely not rocket science to a) give an approximate PX figure, b) give an approximate figure on desired car, and c) remember the punter's name?

Sigh. Back to work.

To be fair, most of the older car salesmen I come across are fine, I would gladly buy a car from them or employ them, but alot of the younger jack the lad type ones? No way!

To be quite frank, I wouldn't find it amusing. I'd find another dealer pronto.

What happens if you have any problems after the changeover if it goes ahead? Would you want this individual to sort it out? ...:-))

But what makes me laugh so much more is how people insist on having a dealer service their car. When you look,in the workshop the people working on the cars will generally have a lower ability etc.

Very few dealers can retain quality techs, or good salespeople. The good ones will work for themselves or at a top notch site.

if it was me I wouldnt be encouraged to enter their premises again !

I doubt it. The techs will as a rule have more between their ears than the salespeople. At the very least they will know something about the cars they're working on. Salesmen are there to sell, not to know about the product. Most customers don't know much about cars, so if he's asked an awkward question the salesman can usually bluff his way out of it.
When he's talking to you the salesman's head will be full of targets, commissions, bonus, getting your name on the database - all the things his boss is chasing him for.

My tip - go into dealers, go through the 'qualification' - which they will all want to do etc. Have your test drives. When you really want to buy a car ring around the dealers and ask to speak to the sales manager (tell the receptionist you want to buy a car today, otherwise he will be in a meeting). Then tell him exactly what you want and that you have the money ready and ask for his best price. All the messing about in showrooms etc is just theatre.

I will never stop being amazed at the lack of training that a lot of business give their employees. I have recently contacted (by e-mail) a specialist car retailer in the UK inquiring about whether they may have in stock the particular model I am interested in. I couldn't believe the reply, a curt almost rude message of no more than one line basically saying that they do not. Full Stop. No follow up information at all, no comment to say that they will contact me when they get one in or to even try in another month when their stock will have changed. Nothing. I am left forming the only opinion that I can - and that is they don't want my business. Fair enough, I shall go elsewhere.

Tried that a few years back when I was in the market for a new car. Got told that they don't do quotes over the phone. I was paying cash and had no part exchange either so no reason that they couldn't give me a price but they wouldn't. I ended up having to waste a morning driving round and getting messed about and even then I couldn't get a straight answer out of most of them. I ended up getting the car from the local dealer who didn't give me any discount at all. Mind you it was a newly introduced vehicle and was in demand.

Next time I bought a two year old ex fleet at the auction and it was a much better experience. No hassle, no salesmen and you knew exactly what you were up for.
