just picked up car after a autobox recon. car is greeting me with 5 beeps. any ideas what it is trying to tell me.
|
When are these 5 beeps taking place?
When you aproach the car?
When you unlock the car?
When you put the key in the ignition?
A N Other?
|
when i open the door - even when not locked.
|
Sony Stereo by chance?
If so, it's reminding you to remove the front face and take it with you / hide it.
I'm guessing the beep function was previously disabled and if the garage disconnected the battery whilst repairing the gearbox, and now the stereo has defaulted back to enabling the beeps.
Obviously if you haven't got a Sony stereo, disregard what I just said.

Pure guess alert.
If it's doing it when you open the door, it *could* and I stress *could* be meant to do it. I'll elaborate.
An awful lot of American cars beep when you open the door, when you start the car, and all that malarky. With yours not being a base model, it could have been a feature that until your autobox work would have been disabled and has somehow (probably inadvertently) become activated.
If it only happens when you open the door, then short of you leaving something on (lights? parking or otherwise) it's a bit strange.
|
Of course, Dave's suggestion is far more likely to be the case so ignore my elaborate suggestion above!
|
thanks for your replies - i appreciate your help. i am totally confused as i have not had these beeps before.
i just went outside and unlocked the door and opened it and the beeps started. they are coming from behind the dash, drivers side. i then shut the door and opened it again - no beeps. i locked the door and opened it - no beeps. it seems to only beep after the car has remained idle for longer.
i have noticed that the battery is on its way out - one of the cells is smoking.
could that be the cause? i can't think why anybody would make the car beep 5 times if the battery was on its way out.
sorry Dave - no i haven't got a sony radio.

dipsomaniac
I've been sitting here wracking my brains for the answer to this.
Yes; this is a battery-disconnexion/comfort-module reverting to default settings issue; but I've have had this before, but I simply can't remember what it was.
Best guess is that it's an alarm issue; perhaps to remind you that the internal sensors are disabled or that the self-powered siren batteries are flat. Have a look under "alarm" or "ultra-sonics" in the handbook.
Try and see if the bleeps re-set after 3 minutes with the doors locked?
|
thanks screwloose. have looked through the handbook but can't find any reference to the problem.
something has been disrupted during the gearbox recon. it must be something simple but i am struggling.
|
if these beeps are supposed to be warning me of something why is there nothing in the handbook? the only warning devices i know i have are for the leaving the lights or indicator on - it is one long beeeeeeeeeeppppppp or beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppppppppp?? depending on how long i take to switch them off.
will test the battery today.
|
Now this may be a shot in the dark, a ball really out of left field......
Have you considered taking it back and asking them what it is, and as it wasnt there before even asking them to fix it?

unfortunately autobox specialists are not that common. this one is 60 miles away and the car is totally dead this morning. will have to get another battery - although i haven't had any problems before, this cold snap could have just killed it.
still a bit confused with the 5 beeps though
|
just picked myself up off the floor - been quoted £121 + VAT
|
another quote £41.42 + VAT. don't know which one to go for now?
|
fitted new (cheaper) battery and everything now ok. apparently 5 beeps is the crankshaft position sensor telling the ecu that everything is not ok. but a low battery voltage will also fool the ecu into thinking the sensor is outside parameters.
