Just purchased a 1995 Peugeot 306, which came with one PLIP
Having done a forum search, it sounds like I need to get a second PLIP and follow the programming instructions, the car can then be locked and unlocked using either of the 2 PLIPS.
Have I understood this correctly?
Looks like standard price for a used PLIP is circa £40. Could I get a cheaper one anywhere?

Er no.
Peugeot have the market on thas one. You will need to purchase the requisite plip from them and get it configured for your car. Only when you have done this can you configure the plip to the central locking. And if my memory serves me correct you can only configure one plip at once. to have two working requires another trip to the dealer! You are looking at £80 ish.

1995 will be a phase 1 306 with a 2-button infra-red plip and deadlocks.
Do you NEED a second plip? The problem occurs if you have a second driver using a non-plip key. In this case ...
1. If the first driver deadlocks the car using the plip, the alarm will sound when the second driver unlocks the car.
2. If the first driver (with the plip) deadlocks the car by using the key in the lock, the second driver won't have a problem, but the alarm won't be set.
If you haven't got a second driver, you haven't got a problem.
When you program the receiver to recognise the new plip, you must also reprogram it to recognise the old one at the same time - or only the new plip will work. Once done, the car can then be locked and unlocked using either of the two plips.
Typical price for a used plip on ebay is somewhere between £30-£40. Be sure to get one which the seller claims to have tested on a car - just saying (as some do) that the led lights up is not sufficient proof that it really works.
The earliest 1993 plips are 1-button and no use to you. Plips from late 1993-1995 cars are suitable. I've seen claims that later model plips which contain a transducer as well as a led will also work, but I don't know if this is true. And obviously, the even later plips without leds are no use to you.

Alternatively , if you have a Palm PDA, you can train it to learn your infra red code. then use your Palm PDA to lock/unlock/deadlock the car. Cool eh! Works for me.
You will need the Omni remote software on your Palm PDA.

I have an IPAQ and tried to do that with my old car - it learnt the code no problem but never worked. I gave up after that presuming that the device had to be hard coded (like the key).
Interesting though...

Many Thanks for the replies, Ian especially.
The car will have two drivers, hence I had thought a 2nd PLIP would be needed. Cost of 2nd PLIP from main dealer is £80, which seems extortionate in comparison to say a TV remote, or digital watch, which must be a similar level of complexity.
For the time being we will probably go down the route of not deadlocking for the rare occassions we might both need to access the car, then look out for a working used PLIP on ebay.
