Hi, now booked for a fortnight in Tenerife at Playa de las Americas.
While there, will be looking to hire a car. I have found various options via the net but has anyone any real life experience of hiring there, who to recommend, did you book in advance etc?
We are flying in at 2am and our price does not include coach transfer, we have heard from various sources that taxi will only be about 25-30 Euros,. However, if I could pick up a car at the airport at that time of the morning and return it 2 weeks later for reasonable prices, then I would maybe consider that as opposed to picking up in the resort.
Any thoughts / ideas etc?

Personal thought without experience of location.
Don't hire when you arrive.. You will be very tired and on unknown roads.. Also, renting from airport usually incurs extra charges. Relax - take a taxi and book the car in advance for the next day, once you have settled in.
I usually do this, and return the car to the airport, as by then I know my way around and also feel more relaxed about checking out at midday, if I have my luggage with me in the car and don't fly for another 12 hours. That way I can do last minute shopping or find a beach near to the airport.
Best cars for this are those with big boots and luggage covers - say Kangoo or Doblo so no-one sees you gear and it doesn't get nicked.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Went to Lanzarotte (s)? three years ago, very similar to tenerife in costs.
Dont hire at the airport, it will be expensive and you dont want the agro of being tired and leaping into a l/h drive car.
Taxi first, then find out the best deals later from your rep or other holiday makers. You dont need a car the first few days anyway as you hunt out your local area and wind down.
Think i paid about 80 quid for 7 days hire inc all waivers from the local branch of an island chain, wasnt the cheapest but it wasnt some local "rip off your credit card when you get back" outfit either.
Have a good trip.

Bobby,
If you do wish to hire I suggest the following company who I used to hire a car in Majorca. They gave me the option to pick up and drop off at the airport on in resort at no extra cost. They are very cheap, everything is included as the title suggests, we used them trouble free.
Carse.

Seconded for All-Inclusive - I've used Carjet (same people) in both Spain and Portugal - no hassle and good prices.

Went to Tenerife 2 years ago. Hired a car (Suzuki Balerno - who cares, it was cheap and had aircon) from a local company at the airport after comparing prices with the international brands. No problems at all. However, we were off peak (February) and arrived during the day.

Thanks for all those recommendations. Will check them out. Think I will take the advice and get a taxi from the airport to the hotel, but on the way back we need to be out hotel by 10am and not flying till 5. So if sometime during the holiday I hired a car that I could return to the airport on the last day, and also give me something to do rather than sitting about with my luggage, then that would be a bonus!

Last year I hired a Renault Megane dynamique....the one with the rear you hate or love....1.9 diesel. I thought it a great car for the job.It returned mega mpg and handled the mountain roads and normal dual carriage ways with ease. If you go up mount Tedi prepare for an interesting trip......it goes up and up with hundreds of hairpin bends. Fuel is cheap, i did the whole week on £16.00.

Further to my suggestion of car on Tenerife check out RCI .com who will give you a good rate and you can collect at the airport. The drive to Playas is a doddle so no worries there and driving on Tenerife is no worse than here.
