Since having the front discs and pads changed, I have a steering shake at 70 mph. All Wheels have been rebalanced to little benefit. Any ideas, apart from faulty discs, which the garage deny?

Maybe they left a small amount of carp between the back of the disk and hub, ie, the disk hasn't seated itself down on the hub properly.

As a matter of interest do you get a pumping effect on brake pedal? at any time during braking.Another possible is drive shaft out of balance apart from a suspension prob.
|
As DD says, very likely a small bit of debris got trapped between new disc and hub - a *very* common problem when new discs are fitted. Caused by the mechanic trying to rush the job and not cleaning the interface thoroughly. It only takes a bit of git 0.25mm and you get this problem.
Only cure is new discs. Confirm the diagnosis by checking the discs for runout with a dial gauge.

>>It only takes a bit of git...
so true. 8-)

thanks for the interest, but no, do not feel any pumping on pedal under normal braking. Will tell mechanic to check suspension bushes after he carries out run out check on disc faces.
|
I feel it unlikely that disc will cause this.but as the experts have made their point.I hope you will let me know what has caused it.thanks

The plot continues, The car went in on Friday, disc run out checked, minimal. Discs cleaned and reseated, just in case. No obvious defects on steering or suspension. Wheels rebalanced for the third time. Shake now moved to 80 mph, so not a major issue, but still there.
|
If what they did moved the shake from 70mph to 80mph, then they must have done something - if you see what I mean.
Can you have the wheels balanced on the car ?
Is the shake affected by using the brakes ?
|
Strange. I wonder if their balance machine is faulty. Try having the wheels balanced elsewhere or swap the back wheels with the front - see what happens.
|
The balance was done on 2 different machines, but the thought had occured to change front to back. Not easy to balance wheels on the car as it is a front drive automatic and should not have wheels spun up over 30mph. Still cannot understand the problem happening so suddenly following the disc change if it is simply a tyre problem.

I agree - it does sound suspicious.

Are you having on car balancing or off?
|
All balancing was done off the car, as I said before car is automatic front wheel drive, so should not have wheels spun faster that 30mph. But to end the saga. After much aurgumnt with the garage they agreed to change discs once more and hey presto, all is fine again. Can only conclude that the actual discs were 'unbalanced'.
