morning all,
1st- forgive typing- head hurts!
2nd- during a night at local, a discussion evolved that has had me looking for info this morning on aqua-cars. i was thinking of selling my boat, due to health reasons, but my mates who usually fish with me,didn't want me to.. and they didn't want to buy it themselves. however, during my search, i came across this little number, this particular one is not what i want, but interesting, and looks fun!. i am however seriously thinking along these lines!,how would (assuming you could get a quote)you insure it? as a boat or a car?
sorry, cant do link things, so search under popular science / the ultimate convertible.

I just don't get this whole thing.
As it happens Drive had one on last night (Dear Vicki my phone number is...).
The engineering problems are vast and the solutions expensive thus you end up with:
an average/bad car that becomes an average/bad boat
for a HUGE amount of money
The one on Drive was £150,000! For that you could have the most luxurious of 4 wheels a damn good boat and a trailer.
Simply a solution to a problem that does not exist...

hi Thommo,
that is a little too expensive! and i agree with what you state, however, i was thinking along the lines of...drive off the road, fish, drive home again. there is quite a lot of hardish work involved in launching and retrieving the boat, which i don't know if i'll be able to continue to manage, so i was keeping an open mind as to this option, until either my research or BR opinion made up my mind one way or the other.
thanks for your thoughts though, anyone one else like to comment on the viability of going afloat in this manner?.
p.s thanks for putting the link in mapmaker!.

The good news is that due to a big demand production has increased and the price has been HALVED.
Now only £75,000 including VAT.
I noticed that one optional extra is a set of alloy extentions to the hubs so that hooks /slings can be attached enabling ones staff to easily winch it onto ones yacht.
Any takers at the revised price?

Back in the '60s there was an amphicar based on the Triumph Herald. Still a few collectors' items left around, I think. Of course the trouble is the water gets in and rots the chassis. And the Herald never needed any help with that anyway :o)

The £150k amphibious car has just been across the English Channel with Richard Branston at the wheel...:-)
Re the Triumph Herald based version mentioned by Terryb, I used to see one regularly in action about 20-25 years ago - the owner often drove off the slipway, either at Knott End or Fleetwood, to enjoy a sail.
We preferred the safety of the ferry.

The Amphicar was only Triump Herald for the engine, other bits came from various parts bins, some very obscure like Porsche 356!
