All Models - Buying new vehicle and choosing registration mark - KenC

I have a question about registration numbers allocated to new vehicles.

( not personal plates)

many years ago I recall that when buying a brand new vehicle the supplyiing dealer could (if asked) allow the customer to choose the registration number that they liked the look of from a "list".of standard registration marks that were yet to be registered by the local dvla office.

I am aware since then that the format of registration numbers have changed and many DVLA local registration centres have closed or merged.

My questions are

does anyone know if this practise is still current or is it dealer discretion ?

or is it a matter for a regional DVLA office

thank you

When we bought a new car last year I seem to recall we were asked if we wanted to choose a plate, or just have one allocated from the list that the dealership had available. We told them to allocate it themselves.

Dealers selling new cars have a batch of numbers allocated to them by DVLA. I was able to choose from a small list when purchasing a new car in November.

I was given a choice of about six that the dealer had available

My Main Dealer said they did not have any choice, not that I was interested anyway.
