Quick question,

do they move much on the screen price?

If not, do they pay decent part ex prices if its something they can re-market like motorpoint do?

Any other thoughts or advice welcome.

i have spotted a decent Mazda foir sale, price is ok - not the best nor the worst but its in the colour I prefer.

I've only ever heard bad stories about AC - some on other forums needed their name removing to avoid legal action - as I understand it the main problem is the lack of competition North of the Border.

IMHO avoid - my experiences over 2 buys & 1 service was bad.

Ive bought a pile of cars from Arny and on the whole Id say they were OK but they are car dealers so suspicion is recommender. They have their own way of working, any discount is usually offered easily up front and hard to get much more but I have more issues with their trade in price. They usually offer much the same as the we buy any car type places but and here is where I have not been happy, the price is much the same no matter how good your old car is, old and tatty or mint the offer is much the same. Its a bit the same for the used cars they sell, priced on year and miles only, they seem to work on a set formula.

On the whole I;d say they were pretty straight, not cowboys. Each dealership is independant so can be worth trying different branches and the deal on offer can change dramaticaly week to week. Lots of often very cheap pre reg cars, stack them high sell them cheap sort of thing.

Not so many years ago I would not have gone near them, I bought an 18 month old Mazda which was great but thats the last they saw of it, their workshop was terable, but have since bought several VWs from them and all the mechanics are VW certificated and much better supervised.

Plenty in the North of Englad and Midlands as well now.

Purely by the sheer volume of motors they sell you'll always find punters that have had bad service from them but speaking from personal experience I've never had any bother with the firm, I am confident enough to buy without an expensive added on warranty though. Huge selection and good sticker prices but the demands of a 6 day week including every weekend means they don't tend to hang onto good sales staff.

Faces change constantly and all too often when I've visited a branch to view a car for myself or another I've encountered inexperienced very poorly informed sales staff with zero product knowledge who then call in a more experienced manager to work out the finance, (always at too high a rate) work out trade in prices and give you the hard sell combined with the add on sales pitch for warranties (only 28days included), GAP ins etc.

Often they refuse point blank to move on price, maybe £100 if you fight for it. Their prices are marginally lower than rivals to start with but factor in a warranty which is extra (usually included elsewhere) and the miserly trade in offers and you may find the deal isn't as good as you first imagine. If you're buying new or nearly new and there's plenty of manufacturer warranty left they can be good because of their capacity to bulk buy however.

I went with an old friend to view two similar 63plate Seat Ibiza 1.2 TSi FR's a number of months ago, one at the local Seat main dealer, the other at AC nearby and £300 cheaper. Offer for his Passat TDi with 5mths Mot, a ludicrous £50 at AC, no discount for not trading in and the warranty was extra! I ended up negotiating a deal at the Seat dealer that was £500 (not factoring in the cost of an AC warranty) cheaper and included a 12mth Seat warranty. No comparison. Moral of the story, don't allow yourself to be blinkered by an initially low sticker price.

Finally, what Mazda is it you're looking at and which engine?

Yes I would agree with that, constant turnover of the sales people and the more junior they are the faster the turn around. The staff don’t leave they are just moved around the branches. Maybe its because I have done my homework before I go near them and know the value of the car Im trading in and the car I want to buy then basically tell them the deal I need or I walk away and try somewhere else. When it happens it happens very quickly, a yes or no. A couple of times I have walked away but later get a call saying they would do the deal.

Took my wifes pal over to look at a Fabia, she fell in love , bright yellow, we were in my car so they could not see hers but offered her £2000 for it unseen. This woman is a vet and used the car to carry her dogs and other animals, it was literally half eaten in the back, seats, carpets and trim wrecked. I told her to grab the deal. When she went to exchange cars they did not bat an eyelid.

My current car came from Any at £150 lower price than advertised by the on line brokers and that was a factory order not stock. Was not too happy with the trade in being offered so stuck it on Gumtree of all places and sold it within a week for £750 more. Also removed the load partition grill / dog guard and sold on eBay for £220, hard to get better.

Every car dealer should have " Buyer Beware" above the door and on every car. They are there to make as much as possible off you so dont be surprised when they try. Up selling is the name of the game now, not just cars but everything.

I bought a car from them once; I don't plan to buy another.

My brother recently bought one from them. They said it wasn't previously a hire car - it was.

They also only gave it a cursory inspection, it had to go back numerous times for issues to be resolved.

I get the impression they like to shift large quantities so expect quality care to be low.

I went with her to see their service manager about a rip-off bill a lady neighbour had from them - charged her £246 for new front discs and pads 2000 miles after she bought the car from them (after assurance these parts were fine, no advisory on the pre-purchase new MOT.)

Faced with my presentation of facts he did agree to refund this sum, good result but shouldn't have been necessary.

Here was me thinking they had improved when it looks as if I have just been lucky. I thinnk they have improved but that still does not mean they are good because at one time their workshops were atrocious. I'd still happily buy a new car from them everything else being equal.

Sitting across a desk from an older salesman while he did the paperwork for a used Masda I had just bought he asked if there was anything I wanted them to do to the car before I collected it. I replied saying " no thanks, in fact I would rather they didnt touch it" he looked up over his glasses and said "quite right"

They dont move much on price as they consider their screen prices are low but not car supermarket low.

My sone sells new cars at an AC showroom and he says people come in with inflated trade in in mind or a quote from carwow expecting him to beat it. He cant as AC dont give the salesmen discount authority, that has to come from the manager.

Since AC have a massive number of garages they are bound to get a large number of dissatisfied customers.

And yes, I have bought a new car via my lad, a very nice Renault Twingo Dynamique S.

Thank you for the replies.

The car was a Mazda 3.
The car was not quite as described (A few signs on the interior of a careless previous user) and the part ex offer was less than I had been quoted elsewhere and £10 more than the CAP lower guide price when the other dealership had offered me the CAP clean price (car has no damage and FSH).
I asked why he couldn't offer me CAP clean and he pretended he didn't know what CAP was and their offer was the best I could expect.

The whole set up reminded me of previous visits to motorpoint but with slightly less competitive prices

In all fairness, motorpoint are not as competitive as they use to be on price

Did he get a nice staff discount though? Would you have bought it from there if it wasn't your son working there?

The group, which bills itself as a nearly new specialist, said it had a challenging year. In the first half it cut its prices to improve stock turn and this reduced margins.

Helps explain why a few members of this forum commented in the past 12 months they found motorpoint to no longer be competitive on price.
