Go and read your warranty properly to check what it actually says.

If the warranty co insist on it being W+T, then go through their appeals process, and then if they still go the same way, through the ombudsman.

Given that you only took it in for a service and MOT, what actually are they telling you is wrong with the gearbox?

It sounds to me like they are going to take the stance that it's your style of driving which has caused the fault.

Quite how they can tell this without removing and stripping down the gearbox is a mystery, so I would be taking RobJP's advice.

Is it an automatic or manual gearbox?

Is this one of the GM "weak" gearboxes used in a car where it cannot cope with the torque provided by the diesel engine.

I wrote about this regarding a friends astra a few years back, also bought 2nd hand also with the warranty and in the end the dealer/warranty people contributed to the costs of the repair.

Be persistent with your warranty claim. Any parts of car which is not serviceable can't be clamed was wear & tear damage. A clutch can be W&T item but not the whole gearbox!

As Avant asked, what exactly is wrong? Depending on the fault, they can carry on for tens of thousands of miles if it's just a whine or gradual increase in noise. A gearbox oil change may help. In the worst case, a reconditioned or second hand box should be easy to find and a few hundred pounds as opposed to your quote.

Lots of faults with the latest shape Meriva, Vauxhall dealers seem happy enough to replace most things FOC within the 3 year warranty.

The only thing they appear to quibble about is the head gasket in the 1.4 turbos which can go, same problem in the astra and zafira tourers with this engine.

Its a real shame as it gives lots of power and decent fuel economy.

The meriva also seems prone to both water and coolant leaks, not sure if its a design issue, parts quality issue or poor fitting in the factory but the meriva forum has a fair few posts from owners with leaks.
