I have recently become embroiled in a pointless argument. As these are the lifeblood of the internet, I thought I would share:

Some Porsches (maybe other cars too, I think it was a first generation Cayenne in this case) have an engine with 'V6' stamped on the cover. Underneath is a VW VR6. This has triggered a squabble with three opinions:... Read more

A timely thread. Apparently the last car to receive a VR6 was built on 12th December.

It's past it's "sell-by-date" given the outputs from the 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engines - and proper V6 engines are available within VW Group....

I just happened to be wondering if anyone has any idea how common the practice of removing oil via a vacuum method is these days. I have had a Pela pump for years which I have never used but now my health is failing i think I shall use it for my next change.

Is it true to say this method was originally used on boats for obvious reasons? Read more

"I've never used a vacuum pump changing vehicle engine oils and never will, on many vehicles the oil filter is fitted from underneath anyway and i let the engine drain for several hours, overnight on the Landcruiser for oil pick up inspection"

If you think about it GB, in reality it doesn't matter, any coa*** debris left in the bottom of a sump has to first pass through the oil pump pickup screen and then through the oil filter which traps any further microscopic debris from circulating through bearings etc. ...

We are into a revamp of the already confusing system which will bring big changes to vehicles at both ends of the pollution spectrum including EVs .

Yes, dual cab pickups are now classed as cars. Seems logical though.

Anyone who wants to buy them for commercial reason can claim VAT anyway....

It's that time of year again, when front and rear foglights are either left on all day or completely ignored by the majority of drivers. Dazzle, dazzle, blaze, blaze, reflect, reflect.
Drivers who are (i) forgetful, (ii) completely ignorant of traffic rules, (iii) in an unfamiliar borrowed/hired/stolen(!) car tend to over- or under-illuminate the road ahead, and the combination of ever-brighter HIDs and LEDs, badly-adjusted halogens and endless reflections from puddles in the never-ending succession of potholes, all contribute to a Cold War of dazzle that takes few prisoners. (Perhaps the French were right all along and we should all be gently cruising along in a soft tunnel of yellow hue!) Read more

Hello everyone! I just bought my first car, a used one from a garage I found on AutoTrader. Everything seemed fine at first, and it still drives well, but I’ve noticed three warning lights have appeared on the dashboard. After some googling, I’ve identified them as the check engine light, the EPC light, and a brake warning light (a red exclamation mark inside a circle). When I turn the engine on, there is sometimes a loud, awful screeching sound which I’m not sure is related to these warning lights.

I don’t know much about cars, and I bought this one to get more confident driving and just to get from point A to B. I’m still a young driver, and so I can’t really afford to do too many repairs, and I feel this is unwarranted especially since its only been a week since I bought it. I even have a photo that shows the dash lights on, and the mileage at 89994 (it was 89974 at its last MOT done this month before I bought it). I know it’s a very old used car and so I cant expect anything too perfect, but I think 3 warning lights appearing 20 miles into my owning the car is crazy. The dealer reassured me that the car was well-maintained, had no problems, and that I wouldn’t regret the purchase. Now I’m starting to feel like I might have been sold a car with underlying issues.

Is it normal for these lights to stay on? For context, they turn off when I’m driving but stay on after all the other dash lights turn off. Can I ask the dealer to fix these issues for me, and are they legally required to agree? What are my next steps? I’ve already bought my insurance, and taxed it for the year. I’m sorry for all the questions. It’s my first time dealing with anything like this, and I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. Thanks in advance for all your help!

Another guess on the noise would be the starter motor which seems common on VAG cars of this era.

It's not a big thing - you might be looking at a new starter at some point but on a 22 year old car things will need doing.
