The current road tax system will surely be up for an overhaul or reboot sometime soon.
There are too many cars qualifying for low or zero fees for a years tax. The loser is the exchequer. Those of us with low tax, should enjoy it while it lasts. The more economical or electric our cars become the current discounts they qualify now for, will be unsustainable long term.
So what do the BRs think will replace the current system of road taxing? Pay as you go, tax added to fuel, weight of vehicle or any other fair system for both the vehicle users and government alike.
As far as I know, no party has addressed this issue ahead of the election. But what do you think will replace the current system? Read more
I am looking to replace my 2001 Renault Clio and was looking at 3-4 year old Auris Hybrids.
My local Toyota dealer currently has a couple of Auris Hybrids that are within or near my price range:
- 2010 T-Sprit with Sat-nav, 4,500 miles above the average for the age, Silver, £8,999
(12 months warranty, the MOT & tax expired 3 months ago so I'm guessing it's been sitting on their forecourt for that time & the battery had gone flat when I had a look at it. Has 'first generation' sat-nav)
- 2012 T-Sprit with Sat-nav, 16,300 miles above the average for the age, 'Island blue' £9,999 (which is over my budget)
(2.5 years warranty, has small dent in one of the doors, updated sat-nav compared to above- Possibly "Touch & go", though not sure of advantages).
I drive around 8,000 miles a year so it would take about 2.5 years to bring the mileage down to average for the 2010 model, 8 years for the 2012 model (assuming I kept it for that long).
I really like the 'Island Blue' of the 2012 model, the 2010 is silver which is OK but wouldn't be among my first choices of colour.
I'm not in any desperate rush to buy so am tempted to see what cars get traded in this month with the new registrations (but this spec & price range in colours other than white isn't very common).
Here are my questions:... Read more
It will only be the 12v auxilliary battery that needs replacing. These are virtually a service item anyway, a 2010 car would be expected to need one pretty soon whether it has been sitting or not. Dealer should do this (Toyota retail is only £100 or so, fitted).
New shape Auris had a problem with flattening this battery, eventually traced to faulty design of hazard light switch, which should have been rectified by now on affected vehicles....
Does anyone know what would cause a heavy clutch pedal, when you depress the clutch its really heavy to a point where your knees hurt after a shift.
could it be the pressure plate or the master cylinder?... Read more
what makes you say that. I cannot understand how a worn DMF can make a heavy clutch pedal.
there is no extra vibration. there is no noise on idle and the tone does not change when the pedal is depressed. nor is there any judder at biting point....

No it's not just you, Alby - we've had one big, one small car for all of our 40-year marriage - still have (although a MINI isn't very mini).
I was very tempted by a Golf GTI after two Octavia vRS estates, but when you can have all that extra room with the same (terrific) performance and buy and insure it for less, it seemed silly not to have another vRS. And anyway it's only just over a foot longer than a Golf....
What do the BRs think of this ?

I agree, Manatee. I'd have thought that more cats than dogs are killed by being run over. Most dogs do what their owners tell thjem, at least some of the time; cats never do except when it's 'come to be fed'. Cats don't have owners - they have staff. And many don't wear named collars so it's even more difficult to inform anyone.

If it was an attempt to get a free advert, it's failed, because of all the rightly sceptical comments. The OP didn't put in a link, and I'd have deleted it if he had.
I have a small (approx 5p size) 'ding' in the passenger door. Are any of the suction pad removers any good ? or am I better just ignoring it ? Read more
Our local dent man charges £50+/- for ironing out parking dings - he even did one for free as it was not as good as he usually manages - nobody would see it unless you pointed it out.
A few bent wires and a good eye keeps the ££s rolling in for him - he spends 90% of his time in the local garages sorting out "new cars" and trade-ins before they hit the fore court,
It is a while since I have booked a holiday let, so no recent experience of terms and conditions.
One asks for a deposit of £100 to be returned at the end if no damage to be paid for. I have never seen this before. I understand the reason, but is it usual ? Read more
Thanks for these. Totally content with it all now.

France abolished the 'vignette' road tax , not least because it was a bureaucratic bother to collect.
They put the price of fuel up to compensate, that's why diesel is now a shocking 82 pence and petrol 95 pence a liter here.
