Anyone know why roads are left closed for so long after a fatality?
I asked a policeman last night, following a fatality 3 hours previously, 1 child outside school & 1 car, his answer? "Well, wouldn't you want the road closed after your child was killed?".
So the road is closed as a sign of respect? Or to punish other road users?

OP - if you do a forum search you'll find several weeks' worth of interesting reading on this Forum in relation to this topic - including comments from people that have actually dealt with fatal accidents (and not armchair speculators) - there is a very recent post from a serving Officer saying that the process is now subject of a review by ACPO and the IPCC and that a change is likely. So unless there's a compelling reason to keep this thread open (and in the absence of any new arguments) - thread is locked.

I was looking for more info about slicks for bikes when this caught my eye, its a reveiw of a lamborghini leggenda hybrid. From the post it seems that the lamborghini family retained the right to use the brand name and now make 'lifestyle products'.

So it got me thinking about what other car brands make other products. I've seen Porsche branded products a lot (I think they even made kettles at one point!) but not much from other makers.

So what next? A ferrari ironing board? A Bugatti vacuum cleaner? With car sales struggling at the moment (except for scrappage winners) I wonder if this is something will start to see a lot more. Read more

I'm wearing Jaguar spectacles and Bugatti trousers. Why ? They were heavily discounted by my optician and TKMaxx respectively.
I have also used our Bugatti pizza cutter on occasion.

I am contemplating the 'private user' acquisition of a new car which I would contemplate changing every 3 years having previously always purchased and retained my cars from new for a number of years with the financial consequences applicable to depreciation, repairs and replacement parts costs including the usual tyres, exhausts and brake pads / discs replacements etc.

Any views as to whether it is cost effective to consider an alternative leasing contract would be appreciated. Read more

Hello Geordie1, never been any doubt about the issue. If you can fund it then buy and look after the vehicle. To maximise, especially on high annual mileages, run the car until it won't run any more then start again from new. I kept one car for over 6 years and nearly 200k miles then gave it to a friend in need(still going 4 years later). Purchase finance, tyres, servicing, insurance, road tax and other items came to approx £25K, which is about £4200 per year or £350 per month all in. Cheap motoring for a car which was nearly £20K list. If you do low mileage then you can afford to change every 3 years. My advice-buy it. Concrete

Forgive me as this is going to go on!

Ford have told me that as the car is out of warranty they are not going to pay anything towards the water ingress fault.

The person I have spoken to at the CRC will not speak/return me or my dealers phone calls.

I am now left with the prospect of a £1450 bill.

I bought the car in June 07 and noticed quite quickly that there was water in the passenger footwell. The water appeared to be coming from the right hand side of the footwell from behind the centre console. The car went into Ford in October 07 and a possible faulty scuttle drain tube was replaced. The fault still appeared to be there occasionally. The car went in again in February 08 for the same fault. This time the dealer found no fault. But the fault still appeared to be there. Fast Forward to October 09. The car went in for an MOT in mid October and I asked Ford to look into the fault again as the warranty was nearly up. They looked at the scuttle panel and thought it was damaged. They resealed said item and told me to see how it was.

3 days later, I noticed water in the footwell and was told that the resealing hadn't worked and that a new scuttle panel was required. This I paid for as I knew trim wasn't covered after year 1.

The fault still persisted and the car was booked in on Tuesday. The dealer took 2 days stripping the entire front interior out and has found what appears to be a missing drain pipe from the heater box, but Ford CRC are saying that as the car is out of warranty they will not pay anything. The dealer has been unable to find the missing part which indicates to me and them that it was never there!

So, has anyone else had this type of fault? Is there a TSB out on this?

I am going to try one more time on Monday to get Ford to pay before I start going down the small claims route!

This thing is doing my head in. That said the dealer in Berkhamstead have been very very good and I would have no hesitation in using them again! Read more

where were we all? and what was our relationship with the car today.

(a little fun diversion, I thought)

I was passing under the M62 (having just turned off) preparing to run down the hill to the White Rose Shopping Centre. The van was plastered in road filth and some salt, not having being washed these last few weeks.
A few minutes later I ate a large scone with jam and clotted cream in front of my dieting wife - who pretended not to notice.

Browsed the car mags in Smiths and read in one that Toyota`s downfall in F1 was because they didn`t follow up on contact with Ross Brawn AND they allegedly had wanted to do things `the Toyota way` as opposed to the F1 way. (whatever that is)

Then spent time critically examining all technical apparatus from phones to computers and watches. (This may have looked like the browsing of a long white bearded sheep from a shop assistants perspective)

Later (retail park another place) approached one of those private company parking blokes on foot and freaked him slightly. Noted it was all going into a low tech notebook.

Later still, thought about joining Facebook... (this is what I would have written, if I had)

Where were you all? and were any of us near to each other?

I was thinking of `Latitude` on Google maps, with that in mind. (scary, or what?)

Big Brother - he knows everything anyway - even the cars computer is logging the revs I use coming onto the M62. (4,000 in fourth at 80+) Read more

A friend of mine recently lost both of the plastic buttons from her key fob. I bought a replacement case from ebay which was fine but it then became clear that one of the tiny 'microswitches' on the pcb had also broken. The question is, is she now faced with having to go to Citroen for a new key at no doubt huge expense or is there an easier and cheaper solution? Many Thanks, Stuart Read more

I currently drive a 2000W Saab 9-5 2.3t automatic, and love the gearbox. It's happily done 102,000 miles now, but it is super comfortable for 4, but it's surprisingly difficult to get 3 car seats across the back.

I am currently looking at a Ford S-Max for my growing family. I've taken both the 2.0l Diesel Manual, and the Auto in the same engine for a test drive. I liked both, but prefer the Auto.

In financial terms, the Auto for the same car is £55 more per year on the vehicle tax, and taking the quoted mpg (47mpg for the manual, 38mpg Auto), if I do say 6000 miles per year, the additional cost of running an Auto over the manual is approx. £200 pa including the tax.

This isn't massive, but it isn't peanuts either. What is the actual reality of these mpg's? Is it actually quite difficult to drive a manual at the quoted mpg, and with normal driving actually get better mpg than quoted with the Auto?

With my green hat on, the lower emissions, better mpg etc. is making me lean toward the manual despite preferring the auto... Read more

I ran a diesel C class (W203) 2.2 auto

....
could be around 66mpg on a good night.

I have to say that's extremely exceptional. I've got a C270CDi auto and pretty well only use it for long, steady, motorway journeys. I've never seen better than low 50's (which I'm pleased with) and can't recall even the highest figures claimed on the MB forums being as high as 66MPG.

I do agree that "press on" stop/start driving will absolutely kill the MPG of a diesel auto - if I have to take mine into town then on a 5 mile run from a cold start it'll be doing very low 30's MPG. I think they waste a lot of fuel picking themselves up from rest so it's crucial to try to avoid stopping.

It seems you can drive an auto in a more relaxed manner than a manual and you can let the torque of the diesel waft the car along, backing off the gas as much as possible.

In the video of it driving, it doesn't look like the spoilers were raised but in the video of it being towed out, both are!

I wonder if this is a safety feature built in, we can't give you a bluetooth but we will help you to be aerodynamic when you float!!
