I wondered if someone could clear up the confusion of whether or not the authorities have up to 6 months to notify a motorist of a road (e.g. speeding) offence.

I have looked in quite some detail at this matter and seem to understand it like this :

If a driver is stopped by the police for speeding, the police give the driver a fixed penalty notice which gives them six months to prosecute ?

Or if caught by any type of speed camera (fixed or mobile etc) then the authorities must make sure the notice of intended prosecution reaches the drivers attention no longer than 14 working days (is that 3 weeks ? ) after the date of the offence.

Could you please clarify the situation ?

one more thing...the information has to be laid at Magistrates Court within 6 months...but the summons might turn up after the 6 months i.e. the workings of the court might mean that the summons would be issued after the 6 months, which is fine as long as the info was laid before that date....hope that makes sense

so it's no good thinking 'hah, no summons and 6 months has gone by'

can anyone tell me how to connect a flashing led light, which is to be mounted on the dashboard, directly to the battery. I can't find an obvious route from the dashboard to the battery. Or is there another way to connect it so that it flashes to give the impression that an alarm is fitted. thanks Read more

Has anyone used the Mailonline insurance comparison site? I used it recently to insure my car. The insurance commenced on 11/7 . I used this site because of their £20 cashback offer which i'm still waiting for, the only E mails i've recieved so far is to advertise their other products on the comparison site. Read more

Dear all

my family has a vehicle that was never declared off the road, but has not been driven off the property for more than a year (possibly even 2!). We would now like to take advantage of the scrappage scheme but we are afraid that if we use said car it will flag up as never having been declared off the road and we will be stung for a massive fine.

Is there anyway to get around this or have we made ourselves ineligible to selling the thing and should just get a local scrap company to take it away (they dont seem to ask too many questions.).

many thanks for any help you can give me! Read more

have we made ourselves ineligible to selling the thing

You cannot sell it either you know - just trade it in for a new car in the name of the owner of the car. For scrappage you have to have had the car in your name for at least 12 months. And roadworthy.

3 weeks ago I managed to acquire 4 parking tickets, on account of failing to renew my residents' permit in time (as the renewal notice didn't arrive). I appealed, and they waived three of them, with which I was pretty chuffed, actually. Fair cop, but annoying to have to fork out £40 for nothnig.

This week, I managed to acquire a parking ticket DESPITE being legally parked.

When I write the appeal, I am tempted to charge them £40 for my time. And offer to offset it against the other parking ticket.

Problem is, if I fail, the other ticket will then cost me £80 (as a result of a failed "formal representation").

On the other hand, somehow, I cannot see them sending me a cheque for £40 to reimburse a previous payment I have made if I do pay the £40 up front.

Not sure what to do, what do other BRers suggest?

What was their reason for ticketing you when parked legally MM?

Parking on a meter (or actually a pay-by-phone space, meters having been abolished in Westminster) without having paid the fee.

Indeed I had not. But a resident's parking permit entitles one to park on metered spaces between 8.30 and 9.30 am, and the time on the ticket is 9.10am.

I know that this probably belongs in the Top Gear thread, but thought that it might get lost in there.
In last week episode during the royal mail piece, I think after the Scottish border was a disused road, behind the road they were driving, it was on screen for less than a second and am wondering where it is.
I?m stuck without real internet (typing on a phone :S) for a couple of days so I can?t provide a time, quite fancy a jolly on the bike on Friday, thought I might go for a closer look.

Cheers

Possibly parts of the old A74 - the M74 used some parts of the road, but in others created entirely new sections and just left parts of the old dual carriageway behind.

Have to say, though, that if TG were using the most direct roads to Wick, then they must have changed the roads quite substantially - they were shown on single track roads - there's none of that on the direct / fast route (A9) to Wick / Thurso.

To add to earlier concerns about the quality of European springs my car (2000 clk 3.2) failed on a broken rear spring. Had the job done at a local indies and he said they did quite a lot of business changing them. The springs were made of poor material but the Asian ones were much better and were seldom in need of changing. Read more

I too have never had a coil spring break, had a few leaves broken over the years on trucks and bought a mk2 cortina once that had a broken leaf.

Have to admit one of the many reasons for buying the pick up is the state of the roads, having had old school 4x4's before they can usually stand anything a normal driver can throw at them, the driver usually breaking before the vehicle.

A lot of this problem i'm sure is just poor driving (no offence to those here), on our route home there is nasty pot hole better described as a road depression that lies approx 3 ft from the n/s kerb...almost every car we follow down the road drops into this hole at 40mph or so (40 limit) one after another causing a massive heave to every car both SWMBO and i manage to straddle thing without fail.

Some driver's still think speed humps should be able to be taken at the speed limit for the road...fine so long as they don't mind paying for the rpivelidge.

Forum BHP or KW

Hi

Im a little embarrassed to ask but
I was trying to find out the power rating in the owners manual of my Vectra, and just out of interest for comparison the Haynes manual for my previous Astra G.

However all the figures are quoted in KW (Kilowatts??) in both guides and I cant find anything anywhere that tells me the BHP

With fear of sounding stupid, what actually is the definition of KW and how does it compare to BHP ? is there a conversion possible, and why are we now not measuring power in the traditional BHP?

Many Thanks

Only when the voltage and current are in phase. Otherwise, the watts in the circuit is given by voltage x current x cos(relative phase angle).

Luckily, with an engine the across and through variables (speed and torque) are always "in phase" - unless you have very severe mechanical problems...

Having just got back from a three-hour cross-country journey, I was musing whether there really is more aggression on Britain's roads compared with, say, twenty years ago.

Maybe it's just me sinking into middle-age looking back through a rose-tinted rearview mirror to a time that really wasn't that different to today.

However...... it does seem that courtesy has all but disappeared in favour of a 'me first' attitude - common to both genders of driver. Car adverts and reviews routinely emphasise 'aggressive styling' - even tyres can have (apparently) an 'aggressive tread pattern' :-(

Am I alone in such thinking? Should i just slip on those comfy tartan slippers and get a mug of cocoa? Read more

If you're using the word "gay" to mean homosexual or lesbian then I don't think
that meaning had been given to "gay" in 1955. I think you'll find that in
1955 (and for many years afterwards) "gay" still only had it's traditional meaning of happy.
"Gay" wasn't highjacked by the homosexual and lesbian community until long after 1955.

I well remember 1955 (and subsequently). Evidently the term 'gay' applied to homosexuals stems from it being a handy acronym from 'Good As You' - a slogan originating on the American West Coast. I think that were a car manufacturer to offer a 'gay look' option nowadays it might be misunderstood (unless, of course, it was a specific marketing exercise).
