I know that this probably belongs in the Top Gear thread, but thought that it might get lost in there.
In last week episode during the royal mail piece, I think after the Scottish border was a disused road, behind the road they were driving, it was on screen for less than a second and am wondering where it is.
I?m stuck without real internet (typing on a phone :S) for a couple of days so I can?t provide a time, quite fancy a jolly on the bike on Friday, thought I might go for a closer look.

Possibly parts of the old A74 - the M74 used some parts of the road, but in others created entirely new sections and just left parts of the old dual carriageway behind.
Have to say, though, that if TG were using the most direct roads to Wick, then they must have changed the roads quite substantially - they were shown on single track roads - there's none of that on the direct / fast route (A9) to Wick / Thurso.
