The heat shield under my Focus which protects the fuel tank area from the rear exhaust silencer has partly come away and is hanging down. My local independent says they will have a go at re-securing it, or remove it completely if it cannot be repaired. They say that it is not really necessary. I am worried because it protects the fuel tank. Has anyone else come across this please? Read more
Hi all,
just got this Mondeo. 80000 miles. As luck would have it, it performed flawlessly on the test drive and for 70 or so miles afterwards (mostly A roads). Then:
I had to slow to 50 or so for some traffic. Was in 5th gear, and when the traffic sped up, I gave the car about 50% throttle, and noticed a vibration through the entire cabin. This did not seem to be accompanied with any black smoke from the exhaust. The car accelerated pretty well, but not as quickly or as smoothly as before.
I had another 120 miles to drive, so tested it out. It seems that the vibration only appears when the car is given 50% throttle or more; more gentle acceleration means little or no vibration. It will cruise quite happily at 80, if I let the speed drop to 70 it will happily pick up to 80 again with gentle throttle.
Fortunately, the car seems to have so much torque that its still very driveable.
History of the car:
-new clutch, starter, dmf, 2000 miles ago.
-in July '08, a split boost hose was replaced
-an injector was recoded at 65000 miles; record for this says
"CARRY OUT DIAGNOSTIC CHECKS, TRACED DTC P23 36 NUMBER
ONE INJECTOR REACHED ADAPTIVE LIMIT
RE-ENTER CORRECTION VALUES"
-No 4 Cylinder was "reconfigured" at 55000 miles (thats what the document says)
Could this be a split intercooler hose? There's no black smoke noted. I'm sourcing a Haynes manual at present to help check.
I've also run through the 'gauge test' diagnostic (key in, hold down trip button, etc). This shows no DTC code. (I dont know how detailed this is.)
TIA-

Hi
I am very glad for your delayed response....
Gentlemen.
One of our cars is a disgusting rover 25 which has decided not to start - at first it did this intermittently but now not at all. I mean all the time. Anyway it won't start. However if jump started it goes fine. Trying to turn the engine over, all the lights come on, and the battery is relatively new.
There is a noise from the back of the car which I think is the CD changer! That lasts about 2 seconds but, er, I don't think it's relevant.
My theory, based on an experience I had with a sierra about 20 years ago, is that it might be the starter motor and if you smack it with a hammer it might work again for a bit.
Any advice gratefully received. BTW where is the starter motor??
slt and moved from Discussion, Engine type and year ?

gentlemen thank you all, you were right - I had the ultimate brainwave, called out the AA this morning as I have homestart ROFL
it was a corroded solenoid on the starter motor. Quick scrape and a spray with some stuff, and it's fixed
HOORAY!!!!!
My 206 HDi is confusing me to no end. It will start perfectly when cold and I can run around in it like a normal car. However I park up and cannot restart the car, once the engine is hot. I got a fuel pressure regulator fault so I have changed the fuel filter and housing and the High pressure fuel pump in the engine bay. The engine management light went off and I thought I had fixed it, drove around for half an hour and the same thing happens again. I am getting the following error codes:
P0510 - Closed Throttle Position Switch
P0230 -Fuel Pump Primary Circuit (relay)
P0380 - Glow Plug Heater
P0403 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Control Circuit (EGR)
Can someone please advise me where to go from here, I am spending money replacing parts and just cannot drive the car anywhere because I cant get back home. I love my car and would like to drive it with confidence... please please any suggestions and advice would really be greatly appreciated. Read more

Fiat Grande Punto 1.4 Sporting - Regd. August 2007.
This is one of a few Grande Puntos we have. It is the only 1.4 Sporting and is my son's car.
It has had a few niggles but a main problem is that about 3,000 miles ago when it had about 20,000 miles it blew a hole in the gearbox with internal components having exploded and there was a debate about it getting a new gearbox as it has allegedly been over-revved. The gearbox was reluctantly replaced by Fiat.
Three weeks ago and just over 3,000 miles from fitting, the new gearbox did exactly the same thing and Fiat Technical digging their heels saying it has been over-revved again.
Surely this should not be happening to the Fiat gearboxes. The internal components should not be so weak or soft to allow them to break. There are several posts on forums with the same problems and appear to be mainly the 1.4 gearbox.
Interestingly I had an old style 1.2 punto 2003 and the gearbox did exactly the same by exploding and blowing hole in casing. I was main driver at that time and no way was car abused.
I would be interested in hearing others comments or experiences.

Hi
Yet another Punto 1.4 gearbox broken after 13500 miles,. Fiat are coming out with the same storey again and very little facts
How did you get them to replace the box i seem to be banging my head against a wall
Help I need some clarification.
The company I work for has started to carry out budget services that only include an oil and oil filter change and the car is checked over. No other parts are fitted including the sump plug. It is named as the dealership service not that brand so there should be no mistake that it is to the manufacturer's specifications.
But as a service advisor I have been asked to stamp the service books on the cars having these services as I would with a maufacturer's service, I am not comfortable with this so have been stamping them but hand writing that it is only and oil and filter service to which my boss has taken it that I am being "awkward" and told me "I am of no use to him as a service advisor if I am not willing to follow his command".
I would like to clarify if I in the wrong by marking it up this way in the service book or should I stick to my guns?

I don't think this garage is unique.
I believe that if you have a basic service at Ford Rapid Fit, you get a stamp in the book.
From the rapid fit website "The Ford Value Service is for vehicles over three years old. While not as comprehensive as a scheduled service, it offers a range of checks especially for older vehicles, for just £99. "
2002 Focus 1.6 just bought by my son.
I noticed today that the drivers wiper blade appears to have a smaller 'footprint' than the passenger side. Initially thought someone had put a 'short' one on by mistake but on measuring both are the same size. The passenger arm is longer making it look bigger.
Should both be the same length and if so what size ---- or should the drivers be longer?

>>The Bosch blade that Halfords recommend for the rear screen for a mk1 hatchback was particularly useless and didn't clear the back screen properly.
I bought a Bosch blade, for use on the rear, from one of the online companies.
I told them about the problem of not working and they replaced it with another brand.
I did a comparison between the OE, Bosch and the replacement.
The Bosch ( I guess designed for flatter front screens ) did not bend into a suitable arc.
The Ford blade cost £6-odd and worked perfectly.
So does the replacement I bought.
SORRY TO REWRITE THIS BUT MY TITLE BEFORE WAS CHANGED AUTOMATICALLY TO SOMETHING I WASNT ASKING!!!!
hi there just after a bit of advice,
I have just had my cambelt changed on my picasso, and the mechanic has advised i get the bottom crankshaft pullie (I think thats what he called it) changed asap as it is wearing out.
(I have noticed a slight rattle lately, but didnt know what it was, forgot 2 mention it when the car went in though, so they have found that themselves and told me)
The thing is the car went in before its cambelt changed and the engine ran quietly, but now it's back it's a lot noisier!!!! i was just wondering why this has happened? is it due to the bottom pullie needing changing or is is totally seperate? if so what could it be?
Any response would be grateful,
thanks :-) Read more
Really pleased your motor seems back to normal again.
Dealer near me has some decent deal on Focus 1.6 Zetec's which I may be interested in. I really need cruise control though so the question is, can these have cruise added by the dealer vie a new steering wheel/ and ECU update or not? Read more
CC would suit me working nights. Driving home theres nothing much on the road.
A steady 75mph for 60 miles when tired is just the job.
Remember if you fall asleep with CC on, your impact is at CC set speed, at least.
Thanks for your responses, My local independent who has served me well in the past has removed the shield and not charged me, saying that the fitting was an overkill by Ford! So I trust we will not go up in flames!
