Sometimes when I brake pretty lightly in my 53 plate 406 Rapier, the ABS seems to activate as if the road is slippy when it could be totally dry. I have read about the sensors in the hubs being dirty but is this right ?? Any help greatly appreciated. Read more
I have a R reg/1997 Laguna 1.9 turbo diesel. It has done nearly 130000 miles so the cambelt will need replacing soon for the second time.It still is a nice car to drive, very economical and, touch wood hasn't cost us a lot in repairs.Do I have the cambelt done and keep it or not have it done and just drive it till it goes or replace the car while it is still running well? If it still does what you need it to I'd keep it. You could even risk not doing the belt at all and chucking it away should it fail. Just keep some money under the matress (I nearly said bank, but you need it safe lol) so you can grab a replacement if you need to.
I have Megan Estate ('cos I hated the "bum" on the standard version), and have clocked 36,000 in 18 months. Would have another too.

My headlights are not working I can flash them but no life when switched with the dash rotary switch, sidelights OK, fog light OK, fuses intact. Haynes Manual diagrams a nightmare no diagram for post 1994 headlights. If the wiring is similar to my 1995 Vento then there are no relays, problem seems to be either duff light switch or loss of 12V power to the switch. According to Haynes I can pop the switch out of the dash & check it (tomorrow!) Are there any known problems with this wiring or switches. Read more
Cracked it! the rotary lightswitch was the culprit I was able to dismantle it -very easy - the problem was caused by a rotary cam turned by the external knob this cam lifts the internal bridging link into contact with the incoming (from the ignition switch) contact & the outgoing(to the coumn switch) contact & had 'come off the rails' either through wear or sloppy tolerances. I was able to relocate it by removing the circuit board which is on sliding 'pins' you have to carefully disconnect the geared potentiometer drive as well from memory you set the external control to dimmest setting & the board will lift off. The rotary cam is located in a hole in the board at the 'top' & in the switch body moulding at the bottom. A peg on the sliding contact engages in a spiral groove on the side of the cam rotating the cam makes the slide go up & down like a nut on a thread. the peg had disengaged. It went back together OK & seems to 'stay together' I may have to get another switch eventually but fingers crossed!
It`s getting dark and you are in unfamiliar surroundings, the propshaft keeps jumping out.
It wasn`t a problem when you set off this morning but now things are drifting a little - the sun goes down vertically and it`s dark within a few minutes. There is total silence and then a petroleum spirited glow can be seen in the distance.
Despite this there is an almost overwhelming desire to head for it under your own power - best not though unless you want your toes sucked.
Later, rock music booms out - you have a fever and take an offered (single) paracetamol as though your life depends on it.
Later still you think about the motor as something resembling an small green LED fairy light passes overhead..on..off..on..off.
What`s happening?

The ones in Sri Lanka were, well, fireflies. One tends not to be a close observer when under ten.
The ones in New Jersey - in a piece of private woodland near Princeton - appeared at or just after dusk under some trees. They flashed on and off but weren't flying in straight lines or going anywhere: they were flying up and down between say a foot and six feet off the ground under some trees. Amazing spectacle, very pretty. I liked the sound of the cicadas or crickets on the great plains at night too, music.
We get non-flying glow worms in Sussex at certain times of the year, but I haven't seen any recently and nor has my wife. Doesn't mean they aren't there though.
I have a 306 Hdi which when the engine is cold has recently started to idle from 900rpm down to 700rpm and feels like it may stall.
It drives absolutley fine when its running with no loss of power so im wondering could it be an electrical problem with a sensor playing up?

I need to change the temp coolant sensor on my 02 TDI Pasat SE. Can anyone tell me where to locate the sensor. Any tips on replacement would also be useful. Thanks. Read more
Thanks Andrew.
Just thought I'd stick this in here as HJ's locked the HH ANPR thread so I couldn't add to what I'd said on that thread!
Firstly, sorry to HJ, I made the (incorrect) assumption that you'd know about being able to contact your local Force using the 'net!
So for everyone's benefit its worth knowing that if you have a comment to make about something you've seen and feel could have been handled better its worth noting that you can contact them direct via their website...
I assume there are other channels that can be used and perhaps its worth using this thread for our serving officers to tell us of other ways... though motoring related complaints of course!

Thanks for the info all. Can't see this heading into motoring so I've locked it.
I have just purchased a grand scenic and having a good look at all the paper work i have discoved it has had a new instrument panel fitted a month ago,as a result my millage is 400 miles and i know the car has now done 36800 now is there a way i can put the correct millage on because im concerned when i come to sell this would put people off buying.Im assuming that a renault dealer could carry out this work but im short of cash and also is it legal? leave it as is then you have proof the panel has been replaced. They are a very common fault. At least buyers will see your not lying that it has been done.
My father in law has an intermittent problem with his Omega failing to fire.
It usually starts OK but sometimes will just turn over and over without firing.
The battery has been discharge tested and appeared fine. The car has been looked at by the competant local independent, who couldn't find anything wrong.
There could obviously be numerous causes. Does anyone with experience of this problem on this model have any suggestions for things to check first?
Many thanks. Read more
Another vote for crank sensor, I had intermittent starting problems on my first 2 litre Omega when the crank sensor worked slightly loose ( wouldn't start if the car was pointing steeply downhill ). Slight possibility of intermittent coolant temperature sensor as my second guess.

I have 307 2001 1.6 petrol. Did the same thing had the back abs sensors cleaned and it solved the problem. Get a Haynes manual and it will tell you how to do it. Save 100's. Hope this helps.
