AllFumbs

Having failed to find a s'hand small-ish Jap diesel with a torque-converter auto' I'm looking at the petrol versions: the Micra 'frog' and the Yaris with the grille like electric-shaver foil.

Main use will be 60-mile m'way round-trips. Which is the 'nicer' at 70 m.p.h., please?

Thank you,

AF. Read more

That is a very good point, retgwte, and I didn't mean to be overly critical of the Myvi's seemingly light build. I didn't have to adjust the rear-view mirror; it was fine as is, as luck would have it. So it could have been 'wrong' from the off.

However, over poor surfaces not quite a rattle, more a resonance, could be heard (felt?) from the Myvi's tail-gate area: totally absent in the Sirion, which I have since driven.

I'll post further comparisons and contrasts, later.

The article starts:
The Reverend Morgan began building cars 100 years ago - and the first fruits of his labours had only three wheels.

Wrong, HFS Morgan was never a reverend, it was his dad! And even then you can argue as he was the Reverend Prebendary Morgan.

Blackjack Zero sounds fun enough but I'll keep my Morgan three wheeler.

(I'd have made this comment to the DT but could not see where and I guess HJ has a better way in). Read more

I'm no wiser about the difference between Reverend and Reverend
Prebendary.

I think titles often have to do with how the office-holder is paid - or the source of his income.

Generally, re Morgan - good for them not trying to maximise profit, I say.

Careful! What the towbar supplier really means is "has the car got a canbus/multiplex wiring system", which I'm pretty sure your car has!

If so, then you cannot simply wire in the old fashioned towbar electrics into the lights like the good old days. Modern wiring systems like those I refer to above carry the main power down one wire and very low voltage signals in the light wiring to tell which light to switch on. There isn't enough power to light the towbar electrics from these wires. Plus, if you start tampering with the wires you risk the computer getting confused thinking that tail bulbs have blown. It may then start compensating by lighting the brake lights at low voltage to emulate the taillight, for example. In short, it won't work!

There's two options, either you can fit a bypass relay that powers straight from the car battery and gets a signal from the lights as to when to activate without messing them up, or you can buy a vehicle specific wiring kit that usually plugs straight into the rear fusebox and often requires activation from a dealer.

Guess which of the two is more expensive!

If in doubt, ask a Ford dealer and then buy the right electrics from your towbar supplier.

This explains it better than me:

Afternoon all. I have just finished replacing the head gasket on my 1991 Mk2 1.3 Golf Ryder, torqued it up to the Haynes spec's. My question is this, do I need to re-torque after a few miles, or after it's first warm up and cool down? If so what torque does it need? Many thanks in advance. Take care. Read more

>>By what you have written it sounds like I should've used new bolts? Darn it!!!

Possibly, it depends upon whether they were within the length spec (If VW give a length spec rather than just stipulating new bolts should be used)

Just wondering if any one has any ideas on this.

When the car gets to 76 - 78 on the motorway - the steering wheel begins to shake sending a noticable vibration through me! there is a slight rattle or juddering noise from behind the cloumn / display unit.

It doesnt sound like it is really bad or anything and i rarely do that speed - i have had new tyres put on and had them balanced which should have done it but still it does this rattle?

It's possible the wheels need balancing again. If not, there may be a tracking problem. But I would think the balance of one or both front wheels may be a bit out.

A badly out-of-balance rear wheel can also cause vibration, but it won't come through the steering wheel.

The high level stop light has stopped working on my son-in-law's Megane Estate. There does not appear to be any access screws. The owner's handbook says refer to Renault dealer.
Surely there must be an easy way to change this bulb. Can anyone help me in this respect please? Read more

I guess one should never be surprised at what drivers do at the wheel of a moving vehicle.

I saw a guy looking at the car roof immediately above his head while driving at 30+ mph. With his right arm raised, at first I thought it was some sort of hand signal.

Oh no silly me.
He thought it more important to empty the last few bits out of his crisp bag than concentrate on the road.
Rant over.

M25 this morning:
I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new BMW doing 75Mph
With her face up next to her rear view mirror putting on her eyeliner.
I just looked away for a couple seconds !
And when I looked back she was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup.
As a man, I don't scare easily..

But she scared me so much; I dropped my electric shaver,
Which knocked the meat pie out of my other hand.
In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel,
It knocked my mobile phone away from my ear which fell into the coffee between my legs, splashing, and burned big Jim and the twins, ruined the phone, soaked my trousers, and...............disconnected an important call.

Does anyone know what happens to the Mileage if you change the Dashboard in a Mk3 Mondeo?

Is the Mileage stored on the ECU?

Will the car even start?

The reason I ask is that I changed my dials, and I am not really happy with the look bit the needles are slightly damaged so was looking to replace the complete unit but don't want to go through Ford doing the work!

Any help appreciated!

Thanks! Didn't think it would be simple!

I was hoping to put a new dash in and my mileage would pop up on the new dash!

Nevermind.

Both my sons have found that if you are a younger driver having dad named on the insurance gets you a reduction even, in one case if he's 120 miles away.

Also is now a good time to sell or shall I wait until the Spring?

I agree with Altea Ego. The 58 reg Z4's are out on the forecourt again at the local BMW dealer, and everyone round here is washing their cars in a "thank goodness this wretched winter is over" mood.
Sounds quite tempting, actually - though prices seem to be all over the place.
