My headlights are not working I can flash them but no life when switched with the dash rotary switch, sidelights OK, fog light OK, fuses intact. Haynes Manual diagrams a nightmare no diagram for post 1994 headlights. If the wiring is similar to my 1995 Vento then there are no relays, problem seems to be either duff light switch or loss of 12V power to the switch. According to Haynes I can pop the switch out of the dash & check it (tomorrow!) Are there any known problems with this wiring or switches.

Not my breed of car but shouldn't be to difficult to find where the voltage is missing, finding the actual fault though is something else, I have had to run new wires on a couple of cars recently.

Well that confirms the main beam is working, but have you checked that both dipped beam bulbs haven't blown?
Or don't any of the headlights (main & dipped) work when switched on? That could suggest a faulty stalk.

Either you have popped two dip beams or the stalk is faulty, there are no relays just a fuse for each element. Time to get the meter out. Regards Peter

No Neither work only the flash, from the diagrams there are 2 seperate feeds to the rotary switch, the missing feed comes from the ignition switch. I will check the rotary first. I was going to do it today but have caught a bug & don't feel a bit like playing with car electrics! Manyana......

Neighbour's Audi had same thing recently. Both bulbs had blown together.

Not having a proper wiring diagram makes life difficult, Haynes manual does not have headlight wiring for this model only early car, Haynes Golf Mk3/Vento manual is much easier to follow but not sure if wiring is the same if it is then both switches are faulty(?) white/black wire from rotary switch is supposed to carry live feed to column switch but is not live with switch in correct position & ignition on. I bridged it with meter in 20A mode & got main beam thro' col switch clicking switch got no dip beam so possibilities are 2 duff switches, 1 duff switch & 2 blown bulbs or wiring is different to the limited info I have(& still a faulty switch?) I ran out of light so gave up today will try again tomorrow.
Does anybody have a wiring diagram?

Have you checked the bulbs. ?? I have a 98 manual for this car and the dip feed from the switch is Yellow and feeds F20 and F21 ( Fuse. ) If those are marked up as dip beam fuses in your car then try a live feed jumper to the fuses to bring that light on or use your meter and remove the fuse an see it you can see the bulbs on the resistance range almost a short, well 2 or 3 ohms. Regards Peter

Error, wrong diagram that was Audi.

Cracked it! the rotary lightswitch was the culprit I was able to dismantle it -very easy - the problem was caused by a rotary cam turned by the external knob this cam lifts the internal bridging link into contact with the incoming (from the ignition switch) contact & the outgoing(to the coumn switch) contact & had 'come off the rails' either through wear or sloppy tolerances. I was able to relocate it by removing the circuit board which is on sliding 'pins' you have to carefully disconnect the geared potentiometer drive as well from memory you set the external control to dimmest setting & the board will lift off. The rotary cam is located in a hole in the board at the 'top' & in the switch body moulding at the bottom. A peg on the sliding contact engages in a spiral groove on the side of the cam rotating the cam makes the slide go up & down like a nut on a thread. the peg had disengaged. It went back together OK & seems to 'stay together' I may have to get another switch eventually but fingers crossed!
