Can our legal eagles cast a little light on a question ?

The A6 between Disley and Newtown has been under reconstruction for the last few months, causing great tailbacks. The approaching stretch between High Lane and Disley has two sets of speed limits. The 40 mph stretch going South has the 40 mph limit signs still in place but smudged. A set off 30 mph limit signs have been set up in odd places. Going North the signs have been left as original at 40 mph.

Can the same stretch of road have two speed limits ?

I get the impression that the council are trying to send a message, because the newly - and nicely - finished road is now being dug up again.

We have a village locally where a 30mph speed limit was introduced on the main A36 a few years ago (previously 60mph and lethal). But for a long time no speed limit signs were installed on the B road leading up to a junction with the A36. So I often wondered in the fact that a driver had not passed a 30 sign and could claim ignorance of the limit as a valid defence.

Now, there are signs and so there's no excuse!!

Need to replace the clutch on my Xantia 1.9TD VSX EST. Was delighted to hear from my first choice motor factor that an 'original' clutch was only £100 inc.VAT,and a Valeo one was available @£20 less. On ringing around for quotes I've been told:~
Valeo is original equipment
Valeo and borg&beck are no good
Clutch international are the best
L UK are the best

Clutch specialists will only fit what they supply and I'm not keen to let one of them near it after my last experience.Clutch juddered badly(na thats normal mate) and the gear lever came adrift an hour after picking it up(must be worn out mate nothing to do with us)
Any advice re makes please?
Can anyone recommend someone in NW london capable and reasonable? The book time for the job is just over 7hours. Read more

I bought a replacement clutch kit from GSF for the wifes 405TD. Genuine Citroen part cost around 80/90 pounds on offer and included alignment tool. I spent a week fitting it - 2 hours a night sort of thing. I also replaced the driveshaft seals at the same time whilst it was in bits. Not difficult to do but a fair bit of dismantling.

I need a hand with fitting a standard CD changer, or rather I need to know where you can plug an external music source.
I want to fit a harman kardon ipod connection and it looks like it can be done by fitting it to the CD Changer output socket.

Thanks

slt and moved over from Discussion otherwise it'll be "you should have bought a Peugeot/BMW/Renault" rather than the help you need ! :-) Read more

i cant believe it, i have just fixed the boot lock on this car and straight away the bonnet lock breaks on the same day, i am putting the key in, i turn it left it just clicks and nothing happens...bonnet stays locked, it worked the day before without problem wasnt stiff or anything like that, as far as i can see into the grill it has a short flexible cable(about as thick as a pencil) running from the key barrel to the bonnet release mechanism(which i cant see). there is nothing i can see that is obviously wrong,

anyone else had this problem and knows what the fix is?.

My 1.8 petrol vectra keeps cutting out when the engine is warm and I am approaching a roundabout or a slow moving que of traffice. It starts again straight away perfectly but obviously the loss of power to the steering and the sheer annoyance is frustrating to say the least. Unfortunately what I know about cars and engines could be written on the back of a postage stamp. Does anybody have any ideas so at least when I take it back to the guy I bought it from (who is a mechanic) I sound slightly knowledgable and wont be taken for a ride.
Any help greatly appreciated!! Read more

In addition and possibly before cleaning the idle valve, clean the throttle body. You can clean it on the car. Use carb cleaner, particularly clean the underside of the butterfly flap and the small hole that runs to one of the breather pipes on the right of the throttle body under the butterfly trap. It's various breathers getting blocked that often is the root cause.

Carrying on from a comment that was made over in technical.

Why am I classed as being a snob badge by so many back roomers because I buy VW?
I see no difference between a Ford, Vauxhall, Toyota and Honda. Pure and simple I just preferred the Passat. My last car was nearly a mondeo and the only thing that put me off was the trade in value of the car when I have finished with it. So why am I classed as a badge snob?

I bought a Megane 1.6 over an older Golf 1.6 that was slightly more expensive. Big mistake. Wish I'd bought the Golf now.

I've had a few VWs, Fords, Vauxhalls and found overall the VWs were longer between failures. I'm no badge snob, I quite fancy another Mk II Focus over the new Golf as my next car but my experiences have been better with VWs

Renaults, however, are a different matter! Built to last about one year (if you're lucky)

From the DVLA website, I see that if I wish to permanently import my LHD Skoda Fabia 1.9 tdi, I will have to change the headlights and speedometer.
Has anyone any suggestions about the best & cheapest way to go about this?
From a financial point of view, I think my car, 6 years old but in excellent condition, would be difficult to replace with an equivalent in the UK were I to sell it in Spain. Even if it costs a few bob to convert, I think it will still be cheaper than buying in the UK.

If it only needs an MOT when you import it, then you may be ok with the KPH speedo. I think the rules only say you have to have a means of telling the speed, not what it has to be calibrated in.
