bear with me, there is a very definite motoring link.......

I know it's desperately sad, but I was leaving the library the other day and saw a 2-dvd set for loan - it was an official DVLA publucation, one DVD based on the Theory Test, one on the Hazard Perception, and all based on the latest highway code

The result was I spent an hour on tuesday going through one, and an hour and a half last night doing the other.

Now as we all have some interest in driving standards ;-) and if, like me, the standard answer is 'dunno' when asked what you want for christmas, well, you could do worse than this for a stocking filler - at least as occupying as most of the films on sale at the moment

n.b. - I think the hazard perception thing is a 'good idea', but I'm not sure about the implementation - what does anyone who has had to do it think ? Read more

You may remember, a few months ago, we were discussing the correct way to place your hands on the steering wheel ..... well...

A couple of weeks ago, I was driving in a line of traffic on the stretch of the A428 under St Neots when I spied, in my mirror, a bored-looking young lady in the large white van behind - with her head buried in her hands. Another glance - no, she wasn't the passenger, she was driving. Maybe I was being fooled by the pattern on her sweater or something. Then, as we approached a roundabout, she applied her hands to the wheel. I didn't like the look of this and thought it was a good time to pull into the next lay-by and eat my chewy bar.

Yesterday, the delightful young lady from over the road - who happens to drive a white van - came over for a natter as I hosed the piles of mud from the old Mondy (I had been working in the Cambridgeshire fens). I related the story about the van driver who I had seen - apparently steering with her elbows - and was told, in all seriousness that steering with your elbows is a common practice in Transits - it's easy. Presumably, it leaves your hands free to use you phone or simply to nod-off. Read more

"I do remember years ago passing lorries going up the long drag of Telegraph Hill
west of Exeter with a newspaper open on the steering wheel and the driver drinking
coffee!!! "

Yes but that would have been at about 2 mph !

No such thing as a 'cheap' ferarri, someone will be paying for that racing history dearly! If it isn't bought by an enthusiast to work on personally, the next owner of this car will be into £10k in the first year. Just goes to show the risks you can run if you buy a performance car second hand. Read more

You're missing the point completely, I said 'someone will be paying for that racing history dearly!' - not neccesarily the trader who buys & resells it, but maybe the person who buys it from them for 40-50k or more. I have no idea if it's likely or not (and I suspect not), but maybe it will be restored to a road car to be sold at that price. Even if it cost 15k to do that there's still plenty money to be made in it. What a dog if it is, there goes another shattered dream. I have some idea what these cars cost to run, and believe me, after reading some of the issues and bills that F owners deal with, I felt a lot better about spending £700 for a clutch on my boxster. New headlamp for £1100 anyone?

I hear that to overcome the concerns expressed by users of these devices, manufacturers are moving to TRIPLE mass devices. Read more

And the other thing it does is prevent damage to the gearbox if you change down when revs are too high

Friend's Nissan Primera has terrible front wheel wobble at motorway speed. I put it down to unbalanced wheels, so made sure she put new tyres on the front, but wheels are still wobbling.

So, having eliminated poorly balanced wheels, what else could be causing the problem? It's not warped brake discs because it's not affected by braking. I'm thinking along the lines of suspension/steering components, if anyone's got any suggestions?

Thanks,
Greg. Read more

If they did not wobble before then its not suspension get them rebalanced properly.

Hello.

have a 1.8 cavalier on an L and it's just failed it's MOT. A Ball joint, loose track rod end, handbrake needs adjusting and a headlight aimed too low but no adjustment left in it. Something broken, garage reckons a "Little white clip under the lamp" might be the cause.

I'll be clear, this car is a stop gap while I fix my 306xsi (posted a coupla days ago) so as long as it's safe it don't need to be pretty. Anyone know of any quick fixes or common probs with any of the above?

Muchos Appreciated.

Be careful changing the wishbone as it seems from the Cav Owners Network that the rear fixing bolt under the footwells can strip its captive thread or the captive fixing break off meaning that you have to cut a hole in the footwell floor to get at it from inside the car.

Anybody with experience of fitting snow chains to a Galaxy (or any MPV )? Autow Warehouse seem like a reputable place to go, when you enter the rim and tyre size (215/60R/16 in this case) there are plenty of warnings to check with the manufacturer to see if snow chains are suitable for your car. Apparently most manufacturers will say that snow chains are NOT suitable but this seems to be a handwashing exercise in case something goes wrong. So can they be fitted or not? Read more

Hope you do not mean studded snow tyres because they are an absolute no no in Austria and Germany.

Is this fraudulent/illegal? Council car park fully computerised takes your registration on entry and prints your card out. First 3 hours in car park only costs £2 after that it quickly goes up and can cost £17 if you stay for the full day say 09:00 to 17:00.
Yesterday discovered a way round the system. Went to the car park and paid my £2 then gets a call to go back to the office. Some 2 hours later remembered that I have paid my £2 and should have moved my car. Went back to the car park and put the same ticket into the machine and it says £2 (Fantastic). So my time in the car park has only cost me £4 instead of £8 and with the same ticket a full days parking will only cost me £6 instead of £17.

As I found a way round the councils incompetent system. I have no worries about carrying on doing this but my only concern is the system records your registration number. Can they come after me for the additional money? if they ever notice. This car park is in Scotland.

Just acquired a Charade GTti and afetr one week it proceeded to deposit most of its fuel tank contents onto my driveway over a period of a few days.

I have tracked the leak to a joint between a metal (corroded) pipe and a rubber pipe. Needless to say its in a difficukt to reach spot.

I need to buy some rubber and metal pipe and I don't want to appear a complete numpty so I did some research (on t'internet) and there seems to be several sizes and types:

6mm, 8mm, copper, kunifer and nitrile, plus different types of connectors for metal pipes.

Are there any MOT regs per fuel pipes or can I patch this up?

so long as it is safe and doesnt leak you wont have mot problems
however
if you get a drop in your eye while on your back it will blind you
the fumes while on your back under a car creap up without you realising it and they will kill you
so its not the pipe its the location thats the real problem
get car up on axle stands/ramps get yourself some goggles and make sure someone is keeping a constant eye on you for the duration (seriously ,many moons ago i nearly died under a car up the drive trying to put some petro patch round a leaking pipe)

or get a garage to replace the pipe?
