Does anybody know why the soft top needs to be impregnated? I've done it every 6-8 months with the BMW stuff which costs £20 for a small bottle.
Can anyone recommend a non BMW chemical which will do the same job but obviously cheaper?

My Brakes are currently "80% worn". These are the original VW Brakes fitted from new, I've done 40k over 2 years so it will take a while for them to get down to 90% worn.
But what is a safe pecentage worn for Brakes? Is changing them at 80% wasteful or sensibly cautious? What is the MOT requirement (I guess this is a thickness rather than percentage)? Read more
Thanks - I've taken your advice.
In this case I believe the garage, not because they are a Dealer but because they always put the wear in print on the final bill. In this case I just need new front Pads and the cost is very close (actually slightly less) to a reputable local independant garage.
Today's radio news says plans are on way to allow hard shoulder as a driving lane on some of the motorways (eg. M1, M6, M42 etc.).
However, many wonder where do you stop then for emergency!
By the way, we already use a good part of M1 hard shoulder between J6 & J10. Usually these areas are covered by Free Recovery Service.

The old granny will do the same as she did yesterday when it was still possible.
It's not confusing at all.
The signs are obvious.
I've never seen anyone get it wrong.
Not heard of it causing a single accident.
I understand that it has significantly reduced accidents on the section it is on.
The quicker it is started on other motorways the better.
This may be of help to anyone that cannot lock the doors remotely using the key plipper. I have tried various "fixes" to no avail, but this worked for me.
Disconnect the green connector on the driver's side near the ECU. Start the car and drive the car for approx 30 minutes. At the end of the drive with the engine still running reconnect the green connector. Turn off the engine, remove the key and try locking the car remotely. Read more
Does anyone know what the last 2-WD production car with grease nipples was?
My guess is the Rover 100 (metro) in 1998. Read more
My Rover Metro 1.4 GTa had them - I was 21 at the time just as the new 'Rover Metro' came out... started to rust after 4 years, but kept the suspension greased. Nice little car - not very safe by today's standards and they did rust.
Since the dip in temperature round these parts, the only way I can get my motorbike to register anywhere near normal on the water temperature gauge is to use the old trick of blocking off half the radiator with a piece of cardboard.
That got me wondering if owners of modern cars with big power outputs and bigger air intakes have to do similar in winter to get any heat into the engine ?
Not sure if this is miscellaneous or green motoring. Read more
Your Toyo may well have the same feature as Honda diesels, where the aircon is run backwards to act as a heat pump, warming the engine and then the cabin before the engine has come up to temperature. I get warm air within about half a mile.
hello, noticed that the heater was not getting very hot, sort of all or nothing... well around 4 months ago I changed the heater valve so I thought not again..
well the the weather is quite cold now and only after a short trip I noticed that the engine fan was coming on, way to early... then it goes off again, it seems to me that the fan is coming on and not letting the car heat up enough, then going off again... but not all the time..
what are the tests for this I can cary out?
Thank you Read more
First check the coolant level. Then consider the thermostat.
Hi,
My mk. 2 Clio cassette/radio has lost it's code after I disconnected the battery for a while-got no log book when I bought it. I see recoding companies advertising in the 'Useful Website' section of Honest John. Are these the best thing to do?
What about replacing it with a Renault cd player off e-bay - has the radio to be fit/ compatible with my '97 model? I would like to retain the use of the stalk buttons and display. Read more
Thanks - Renault dealer got the code there and then, and no charge. cheers
Would it kill the bloke who rings up about the Ford Fiesta to say "sorry for wasting your time" before he slams the phone down? After all, he did ring up solely to ask a pretty stupid question, and it's only polite to say goodbye.
That will be all. Read more
Drove 20 miles. Stopped at the shops, inside for 1/2 hr. When returned to car, engine fault light (yellow engine pic. with "Zap!" sign on it) was illuminated, continually flashing, engine she not start. 'Phoned RAC from shop tele (5 mins), RAC on way. Outside to check.... engine fired up! Much joy. RAC cancelled. Back to car. She not start! Flashing engine fault light, lots of cranking, no go. Called RAC again, towed to garage in middle of night. Car dumped on forecourt by RAC man, still wouldn't start. RAC man, he say fault with key chip/reception unit thingy.
In a.m., self to garage, with spare key. Car started no problem. Also started on main (normally used) key as well as spare. pink fluffy dice Garage checked on diagnostic kit - "carried out Tech 1 check, found intermittant fault with ECU. Light now off, if prob reoccurrs, will require a new ECU". Is this flannel?
So. This car phutted out at a roundabout 3 weeks ago, re-started after a minute or two (can't remember fault light being on). It re-started OK after, no trouble since. On this form, a sticky air valve has been implicated.
I drove the car back 10 miles from the garage - no problems (3 stops en route). It started just now. Will the thing go TU again soon? Is there anything I can attempt to fix? Garage have estimated £440-ish to fix - more than the car's worth.
Any ideas? Read more
I agree, it's possible.
I always remember Car Mechanics magazine were fond of the "wiggle" test which involved wiggling all accessible connectors and wires when confronted with an intermittent problem, and seeing if there was any change in the running condition of the car. Assuming there is, the exact location of the offending wire or connector can then be pinpointed, and corrective action taken.
I don't know the details of the Cavalier, but the idea that the ECU should be supported by its wiring loom does not sound realistic. It sounds to me like someone has removed it and failed to refit it correctly.
Cheers
