midlifecrisis

Still on the hunt for a suitable 'mid-life crisis' car. I've finally admitted defeat that a Brera is never going to fit the family. I discounted the Saab and carried on looking for a suitable coupe. By accident, I came across the 407 coupe on Autotrader. 06 reg 2.2 SEs are selling for around £15500 on there. I have to say they look quite nice, but I've never actually seen one in the flesh.

I'm tempted to have a look, but have to admit that I have an inbuilt prejudice against french cars. In the true tradition of this site, I'm looking for informed opinions to help an ageing ditherer make a decision. Read more

Where did you find the info that the coupe is getting sat nav as standard. It would be an interesting piece of ammo when I face the dealer

Is this good?

I've got a couple of mates with relatively new diesel cars (Audi A3 110 and 307 HDi). They both regularly drive 1000 - 1500 rpm in high gears which booms and makes the whole car shudder. Surely this is bad for the engine? But there's nothing in the user manual that says this is bad, it only tells you not to rev the thing too high for environmental reasons.

Any thoughts? i'm a petrol or LPG man myself... Read more

I think that someone should tell this chap that the reason coaches and trucks spend all day at 1200 rpm is that they red line at just over 2000 rpm hence they are nicely in the middle of their rev range at that speed.
How does this mean its good to shudder around around in a car at 1200 rpm?? Why would anyone compare a family car with a truck??!!
My 2.0l diesel redlines at 5000rpm....which is why i spend most of the time between 2000 and 3500rpm.
With regular blasts up to 4000rpm....refer to Honest Johns FAQ's.....its all in there.

Cheers; that makes it an NFZ. Got you now; you've changed the ignition switch; but not the ignition lock. As you say; no inertia switch that early. You are right in the bad looms zone though, so wiring checks are the best next step.

Unplug that combination relay and check that wires coded BB12 and BB13 are live all the time and that CC1 and CC2 are live with the ignition on.

Bought a £9500 CLk for a customer, but did not notice that the lcd clock was not clear. By the time I got home after collecting it (200 miles) I could read the time, except for a few crystals. Once I start it up in the morning, the display is almost none existent. Apparently on the left is another display that shows how far to go until re-fuelling but this is virtually blank all the time. Is there an easy fix or is it a dash out 10 hour job to replace a £5 part?

nb the battery was duff, and I have replaced it, would this affect the display? everything else is fine

ps there should be a light in the dash to say the airbag is disabled, but it does not light up when you press the button, is this a dash out 10 hour job.......

I have not been to Mercedes, as I am relying on your fantastic help Read more

Not only do you have to replace the whole unit but you have to have the new one programmed in by MB dealer or MB specialist thats why so many E class motors have faultu clocks. The cheapest unit for an E class in Germany I sourced was 380euros plus fitting and that considerable cheaper than MB.

I use an NCP car park when going to watch "my" rugby team (another magnificent win today in Heineken Cup - now only Munster to beat -away - to get to knockout stages!) I usually pay using cash in ticket machine on exit but on 18th Nov last put my credit card in on entrance, but on exit there was a fault on machine so was just waved out by an attendant. Been a few times since but not used card. Today used card and was (on machine display screen) told that I was already in the car park and had been since 18th Nov - card would not be accepted- oops thought I this could cost me - two months at a quid or so per hour. Helpful blokes in office said they couldn't help (though said they would have brought me a turkey sandwich on Christmas Day had they known I was there for Christmas!) but gave me a contact card with e-mail address. On return home at 6-30 tonight I e-mailed them explaining situation. 2, yes 2 minutes later the phone went and it was a nice lady from NCP. Said she would clear my card and cancel the charge but for 1 penny.
Not bad service for 6-32 on a Sat evening??

You are all very lucky, then. All the NCP-run places in my area have been de-staffed and made PAD, with ticket machines that don't give change, and have since become very expensive places to park. The latter fact may be at the behest of the local and county councils, which between them seem hell-bent on making life unpleasant for motorists around here.

My track control arm rubber bushes need replacing on the 206, they are the same type as used on the Escorts. The arms were replaced some 12/15mths ago and the ball joints are OK.

Any techniques in getting the rubber bushes out for renewal.????

Thanks

Not worth bothering with rubbers on these.

Sling another set of arms on, much easier & quicker, parts are cheap as well.

206 & 307 are well known for knocking the front wishbone bushes out.

Lowering ( a lot of 206s are ) & attacking speed bumps is the main cause.

Also the ball joint isnt part of the arm, its part of the hub ( PSA like to be different )

Question UV cut bulbs
BobG

How can I tell which H4 bulbs are "UV cut" and therefore safe to use in modern polycarbonate light units and which I should keep as spares for my Land-Rover?
I have a mixed box of almost new bulbs form various scrapped or damaged cars which I might as well use if I can.
