100k or 10yrs

The handbook that came with my '97 mk2 (Zetec) Mondeo says:
Zetec/Zetec-E - every 80,000 miles or 5 years, whichever occurs first.
Zetec-SE - 100,000 miles or 10 years, whichever occurs first.

Sorry i should have been more specific earlier. If the cam cover on your engine is black plastic then the service interval for the timing belt is 100k,however if it is aluminium then it's 80k

Just had a look at mine and it's aluminium with just "Zetec" stamped on it - which is very strange because in the 'Capacities and specifications' section of the handbook, it refers only to the "Zetec-E".
Just out of curiosity, can anyone cast any light on what the differences are between the Zetec, Zetec-E and Zetec-SE engines and when they arrived?

My understanding of the units is
Zeta/Zetec original name of:
1.6/1.8/2.0 cast iron bottom end, alloy head engines that came onto the market in 1992
Zetec S (SE)
1.25/1.4/1.6 alloy bottom end and head started to appear around 1995 with the MK4 Fiesta
Zetec E
Same is the original Zeta/Zetec 1.6/1.8/2.0 but renamed sometime around 1995/96
Zetec E (Rev2)
Revised in 1998 changing hydralic lifters for solid mech versions. Timing belt interval changed from 80k as per Zetec E (rev1) to 100k.
Hope this helps

IIRC the 1.8 appeared first in the Orion in 91 in two power outputs, 105 and 130 bhp followed by the 90 bhp 1.6 in the Escort and Orion, the 130 bhp 1.8 in the RS1800 Fiesta, the 2.0 first appeared in the 93 Mondeo which had the 90 bhp 1.6, 115 bhp 1.8 and 128 bhp 2.0.
Zetec S (SE) 1.25/1.4/1.6 alloy bottom end and head started to appear around 1995 with the MK4 Fiesta
Designed by Yamaha. IIRC 1.25 and 1.4 in the 96 model Fiesta, the 1.6 first used in the Focus in 98 along side the 115 and 128 bhp 1.8 and 2.0 Zetecs.

What Cheddar said.
And the only Ford multivalve four not covered is the Puma's 1.7 VCT engine, which was a development of the Yamaha/Ford Zetec-S (SE) engine, not the older Zeta/Zetec unit from the Mondeo and Escort.
With regard to the op's question on belt change intervals, I bottled it, and changed the belt on SWMBO's 97 Fiesta (1.4 Zetec-SE) at 86,000 miles, which was 14,000 miles early. In fairness, the belt looked in OK condition with no sign of cracking around the teeth, but the tensioner had play in it and was rough to spin. I have my doubts it would have gone to 100k, and obviously with the car well out of warranty, wasn't going to risk it.
Get the belt done. It will then almost certainly outlast the car (or your ownership of it at least)
Cheers

The 1.25 and 1.4 were first released in October 1995 during the launch of the MK4 Fiesta.
