First thing in the morning car starts immediately on all four but within about 10/15 seconds tickover becomes lumpy and it's start's to smoke badly (grey/white) and smells of unburnt diesel, once it becomes warmer ther is a pinking noise reving from tickover to 2,000/2,500 revs, and continues to smoke horrendous, compression's are all 400. It's as though it's flooding with fuel.?120,000 miles f.s.h.

Hi, Thanks for reply, my first thought was injectors, it is a siemens system, but heard so many cases where these have been replaced and it's not cured problem, anyhow i thought i would get them checked out and the diagnosis was 3 not working 1 ok, which is imposible surely if it is running on 3and a bit and over fuelling?

I have been offered an N reg Defender 90, and in my 30+ years of motoring have never run a LR product...very wise some might say! I sold my Legacy estate some 2 years ago, but continued to run my '97 VW Transporter, for no reason other than emotional attachment.
During the next 6 months I am having a house extension built, and once complete, will assess my finances and purchase a car. The LR will be useful for building materials, and I plan to sell the VW LWB Hi Roof Transporter 2.4D as I fancy a change after 9 years...despite its fantastic reliability.
The LR has had one owner from new, tax to October, FSH, new tyres and a genuine 70k miles. Living in rural North Yorkshire I should have no problems in finding a buyer when I come to sell, but what should I offer? Having looked at Autotrader online, prices seem ridiculously high for old (in my opinion) Defender 90's, but I am tempted to make an offer, but do not wish to insult!
Does anyone in the BR have an ideas as to a sensible offer price. Presumably if I buy this LR the current owner will be in a position to negotiate a good deal on its replacement, having no part ex.

The dirt and mud adds to the authenticity and helps make up for the inefective door seals.

I have never seen adefender that has never been off road or towed other than brand new unn redgisterd ones going up the motorway on the back of a transporter.

Not sure how I have managed it, but I can't find the interior fuse box on my 97' accord aerodeck LS. The manual says it should be under the drivers side dash, but nothing there. I know there is one in the engine bay, but that does not have all the fuses.I am looking for the electric aerial fuse, which should be in the interior one - if I could find it. Any one got any ideas? Thanks Mike, it was down by the gogo pedal - was hoping the electric aerial fuse had blown, but it is intact, so more tracing needed now to find the cause!!!!!!

nix2007

Yes it did. Since posting this iv had it serviced and the only thing they could put it down to was the boot latch was alittle loose. Since its been tightened the central locking has worked perfectly. How bissar

Hi
So I put in new glow plugs, the dashboard light goes out, but the car is still nearly impossible to start except when it's warm. Then it starts easily.
Also the alternator light flickers on and off a bit. Somedays it's on, somedays it's off!
Any ideas? Relay?
Thanks

NC - I see your point, I'm all for good maintence, so much so that I change my oil twice a year despite doing only about 10k per year and I use recommended oil. But with the old engines the clearences didn't close up they got bigger making a racket not reducing the clearence leading to a non starting engine. Must agree though the Isuzu is a good engine in a Astra, driven a few mile in one or two.

Last week I finally sold my trusty 1990 Toyota Celica.

She has served me well for the last six years, and I feel more than a little sad for passing her on.

It was a little strange watching her drive off into the night, as I don't often get to see my cars being driven by someone else.

I needed to sell her, as my back problems are getting worse, and I just can't drive a manual car any more. So I placed an advert in the local free ads and sat back secretly hoping for the phone to not ring!

However, a guy phones up, and wants to see the car and asks if I'm open to an offer. I obviously say yes (I'd been very optimistic about the price!).

He pops round, takes a quick look at the car, and starts talking money - before a test drive, or check of the paperwork etc, plus it was getting dark, so you couldn't see the bodywork properly.

A deal is struck, he pays (cash - which I check VERY carefully), and away goes the car.

It was the most surreal car transaction I have ever had! If I'd been a dodgy dealer, I could have sold him any old junk (my Celica was probably the best, standard UK car available - am I modest or what?), but instead he has got an amazing car, and I have got an excellent price for a 17 year old Toyota.

Perhaps the motoring Gods were smiling on me!

Amazing the number of people who are wiling to buy cars without a test drive. i usualy check all the documents and the engine numbers etc then take the test drive before getting the seller to do one, then a breif under body check ie state of tyres fluid leaks etc then the negotiation starts. My first buys I was fleced but lately with my last two vehicles I have enjoyed the negotiation imensly.

Hello

Having used a Tom Tom 700 I have found this most useful piece of equipment ( and toy ) especially when travelling on the Continent. I am now considering whether to have the factory installed version sat nav system on my new car later on this year. I know is a very expensive option to have in a car. What I need to know is the VW installed version just as versatile as the Tom Tom or does it have better functions etc

I would be grateful for any comments on the comparison between the two

Many thanks for your help

Go for the Tom Tom. On the X10 models - e.g. 910 it has bluetooth phone capability that works well with most bluetooth mobiles. On the 910 it even reads out texts sent. It also reads the road names and numbers on the 910. (Though it says take the A two hundred and twenty nine - where I would prefer A two two nine for three digit roads).

Hi

Got a 1999 206 XS thats done 67000 and last service was about 7000 ago (before i owned it)

Everything seems OK with it but over the past 500 miles or so there is a slight knocking noise coming from engine that you can hear on idle and increases with revs and makes no difference if the clutch is depressed or not. It is not a very bad noise and once moving cant be heard over general road noise etc. Everything seems OK and sometimes the noise is not there. Oil levels are fine and there is no smoke etc. It sounds a bit cammy but it actually seems a bit more audible in the car than outside.

I am going to get it serviced very soon and also maybe the cambelt done, when are these suposed to be done on these?, but in the mean time does anyone know what this noise could be?

thanks Read more

AR-CoolC

I have a daily commute from Lincoln to Leicester along the A46, and pretty much every day is the same.

On the A46 about 2 miles south of the A52 (bingham island) is a traffic light controlled junction, and every morning when I get to it at about 07:30-07:40 I go either straing through, or maybe wait a couple of minutes in a que of about 50m. This hasn't changed much over the 4 years I've been doing this run.

Now in the last few days I've seen a huge change at this junction, and this morning (arriving at my normal time) was in a que about a mile long to get to the lights. Whilst sitting in this que I could see that there was a long que in each direction towards the lights.

Now the conspiracy theorist in me thinks that maybe this junction/area, now with it's altered phasing of the traffic lights will, in the next few months be used as a pilot area for road pricing.

Alter the lights to cause conjestion, give people a bit of time to get well fed up with it, then pilot a wonderfull scheme to solve the problem (that didn't exist a few month ago).

Or am I just letting my imagination run away with me? Read more

Ken Livingstone doesn't have to issue instructions to traffic light engineers
- they set them for maximum congestion just for the sheer
love of doing the job.

I'm afraid you may be right CP. There's also much creative use of repairs and building work involving partial road closures. It's ideology backed by that sort of hypocritical victimised arrogance we see in jihadis. Unfortunately there is no simple and brutally violent solution. Indeed there may be no solution at all. We may just have to give way to these jerks because they're nearly a majority and have a majority hypnotised.
