1999 206 knocking noise - chewymix

Hi

Got a 1999 206 XS thats done 67000 and last service was about 7000 ago (before i owned it)

Everything seems OK with it but over the past 500 miles or so there is a slight knocking noise coming from engine that you can hear on idle and increases with revs and makes no difference if the clutch is depressed or not. It is not a very bad noise and once moving cant be heard over general road noise etc. Everything seems OK and sometimes the noise is not there. Oil levels are fine and there is no smoke etc. It sounds a bit cammy but it actually seems a bit more audible in the car than outside.

I am going to get it serviced very soon and also maybe the cambelt done, when are these suposed to be done on these?, but in the mean time does anyone know what this noise could be?

well i had a good listen around the engine this weekend and it appears that all pulleys are quiet and also the cam seems quiet. The knocking/loud ticking appears to be coming from the rear of the engine near the bulkhead. It sounds as though it is coming from the induction side of things but i dont really see how it could be. There are no fluid leaks that i can detect and feeling around the bulkhead side of the motor there are no obvious air leaks or anything.

Anyone got any clues here at all as i could really do without taking it somewhere to be investigated at $$$ per hour.

is this a diesel engine? im thinking injector rattle which is common on hdi's
