I'm buying a new car soon, on the options list there is a nice set of 17" alloys, the original spec is 16", apart from the 'looks' will I notice any change in the way the car drives? Read more

Why does having 17" alloys make someone a drug dealer? I have 17" wheels and I'm no drug dealer - just think they look better than the 'free' wheels the car came with.

Does anyone know what proportion of the 100,000 or so models produced ended up in each country that it was officially imported to?

I've recently had to have a new key programmed by Audi for my 98 Audi A3 1.6 SE. The key now works in ignition and in the door but the remote central locking doesnt work. Apparantly there is a problem with one of the modules in the foothold which will take three labour hours plus parts to fix, something I'm a little loathed to pay. Apparantly its caused by damp getting into it, something like that. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to resolve or who else to go to to have this problem corrected?

Not neccesarily.
There is a procedure for resetting the remote locking from the fob - which is totally different in function to the immobiliser.

Did the remote locking work before the new key whas done ?

Is there a suitable product on the market for removing a scratch from a windscreen or a company specialising in scratch removal. Any advice would be much appreciated. Read more

See half-way down this link which also includes a strict warning
not to use Duraglit...:-)

That seems like a bit of a sweeping judgement...
Here in France Lidl stores are full of decent food, including fresh fruit and veg, at prices that make the big name French supermarkets look the expensive places they are. Their special offers are often good value too - including the motoring stuff.
Their stores also seem to have the best air conditioning of all - a big plus at the moment.
And in my experience, if you want to make contact with other ex-pat Brits over here, Lidl is a cert...

Thinking of getting a new A6 as my next company car - but am unsure about which diesel engine to go for. I'm drawn to the 2.7TDi, with 180bhp - but the 2.0TDi (140bhp) would be £50 a month less cost to me (before tax, so actually £30), and is also about £60 a month less in tax.

What I'd be grateful for is anyone who has experience of both engines - I want something with a reasonable degree of poke, and this is a big car - not sorried about 0-60 acceleration, but want a goof bit of grunt 50-70mph-wise. If the 2.0TDi can accelerate reasonably well then I can spend the extra £100 a month on toys!

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Well...it's ordered - delivery 'late September', so the lad i spoke to was being a bit optimistic with mid-August.

Gone for the 2.0TDi, dark pearl blue, DVD sat-nav, headlight washers, split rear seat, front and back parking sensors, folding mirrors and auto boot.

Just had a 9-3 150bhp auto on test - impressed with th power, but didn't seem terribly well screwed together and not very roomy at all.

Anyway - 12 weeks or so!

can someone declare what is required when u buy a car which is category d to get it on the road? Read more

martint123

AFAIK it just needs an MOT if over three years old. Normally the insurer keeps or destroys this when vehicle sent to salvage.

Doesn't need the VIC - Vehicle Identity Check

Ford Galaxy - 1.9TDI 110Bhp 1998 model.

When the revs drop below 2000rpm often find it loses power and have to rev the engine to recover. It feels like something is sticking.

Suggestions on what to look for.

Try posting this on www.fordgalaxy.org.uk; several possibilities including the MAF sensor, vacuum pipes leaking etc etc.

I have a astra with LPG conversion today when I filled it up with lpg, the gauge when runing on LPG still shows the level where it was before i filled up. When runing on petrol the fuel gauge is fine.

Does any one know if the fuel gauges in the lpg tank are pressure sensors or normal type fuel gauges and hence may just be stuck,

Any ideas

Thanks Read more

Gauge senders on the koltec systems are a poteniometer on a float! As basic as can be. As far as info there is very little available to the dealers and a lot don't deal with the LPG anyway. If the Astra is an Astra-H then its crucial that the instruments are programmed to linear voltage rather than linear resistance to get an accuarate reading.

French motorways have marker posts every km. I once thought I would check my speedo by driving at as-near-as-I-could-manage exactly 100kph for 1 hour. Result? 99 marker posts. Pretty accurate, I thought.
