Hi,
After a slight error when my wife said the oil light was on, I suggested getting oil and putting a drop in. just enough to last until the weekend... Unfortunately, due to an error in communications, she got oil, put it in. The same night when I got home, I put in some oil... OK My fault, I should have dipped it but we both put oil in. So, the following morning (today) she informs me it is smoking badly... On her way home going up a hill, she lost power and LOTS of smoke out the back. I was able after letting the car sit get it up the hill and home.
Can someone confirm that:
the smoking is caused by too much oil
A N D
the loss of power and excessive smoke is also due to too much oil and the hill incline didnt help...
The car is 10 years old and is needing a clutch amongst other things... We just need this car running for another month or 2 before we change!

Ok
well i have bought a car which was advertised as having heated seats, when i noticed a couple of days later that there werent any i wrote the seller (a small dealer) a letter saying so and that i wanted a full refund on the car. The gearbox has also turned out to be dodgy (the gears slip)
he has offered to repair the car's gearbox and install heated seats but i want a refund, which i am totally entitled to but he refuses.
Now the car cost 10k so its not gonna go to small claims court.
what will happen if it goes to court, is there any chance he can win? Read more
If he employs a lawyer, in the Small Claims Court he can't claim those costs back irrespective of whether he wins or loses. (Neither can you, so if you do spend half an hour with a lawyer, you won't see that ~£50 again).
However all you can claim are the costs of repairing the car, not the whole amount, as there is a limit of £5,000.
I've just passed the first new BMW 3 series I've seen in the flesh on the way tonight.
What an ugly car. What do you all think of it? Read more
I'm ready to be corrected but I don't think that Bangle can be credited/blamed for the new 3.
I don't find it as pretty as the old 3 but then again I thought that of the new 5 as well and I went out and spent my own money on one. Wouldn't want aything else in the cass other than a five though....(just done 300 miles today on windy Welsh roads and motorways - superb car.)
I need to drive from Oxford to Sheffield next Friday (1 July). Leaving Oxford around 4.30 pm. Any suggestions as to the least congested route? (I'd normally go A34, M40, A43, M1 etc but I'm dreading the M1 on a Friday afternoon).
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for that daveyjp. Sounds like I'd better not make any plans for Friday evening.

Dear Honest John, I have this problem...
...I have a warehouse full with £40M of MG Rover parts, have on-going parts supply agreements in place, access to tooling and an impressive track record of quality of parts and availability in supporting MG Rover owners. However, despite this and numerous press releases, the media is determined to ignore these facts and continue to unnecessarily alarm owners and potential buyers of MG Rover vehicles. Please help...

Well we can only judge by our own experiences.
I had a Rover 216 Vanden Plas. The worst car I have ever owned and cost me a fortune in spares and repairs and depreciated like a rock falling off a cliff. Could not PX it as the trade described it as 'poison', had to sell it privately for what I could get, not much.
As with most people who have a bad experience with a Marque I said 'Rover, never again'.
I know something of the parts disaster that occured whilst Rover was producing as I have a friend who is the FD of a packing and shipping company specialising in car parts. Newish Rovers were off the road for months waiting for parts.
Maybe the situation is different now and maybe not. I for one would not be willing to take the risk. To those that are, good luck.
Is there a pricing guide for static caravans. It's difficult to work out if the deal I've been offered is a good un or not. Read more
The general rule is: the more water it lets in, the cheaper the caravan.

i've a 99 vectra and something has happened to the display that gives the temp/time radio station i dont have the on board computer display just the standard fit one
it looks like the display has stopped working but on inspection you can see it's still ok its just the back light that illuminates has blown or whatever causes it to be lit up the amber colour it normally is --
is this a common/simple fault to rectify or is it a garage type fault ??
pleasehelp -- i love seeing the temp rising sitting in hold ups on the M6 Read more
Instructions here on how to get the display out to change the bulbs.
Goto homepage.ntlworld.com/cavweb/misc/ and scroll down the list until you find "veccyclo.doc". (It's almost at the bottom of the page). If you haven't got MS Word, it should still open with MS Wordpad.
You don't need to go as far as removing the speedo housing; just the cowling that covers the radio display and speedo.
ps, as previously mentioned, you don't need to press the 'return' key when you get to the end of each sentence as the text will automatically word wrap ;o)
pps, I've reformatted your text to remove the carriage returns.

I recently had all 4 tyres slashed, resulting in £575 bill for new rubber. After allowing for my £300 excess, I'd anticipated getting the balance of £275 back from my insurer, but they have told me the claim was reduced by 50% taking into consideration the age of the old tyres. As it now comes to less than the excess, I'm finishing up paying all of the £575 out of my pocket. Is this normal practice where tyres are concerned? Does wear & tear on other components get taken into account when they need replacing via an insurance claim, e.g. engine parts, seats, exhausts. Read more
they may not mark it as a claim, but can mark it down as having had an incident.
this can still carry a loading and vandalism i believe has a bigger loading than attempted theft. strange.
My 1989 Golf GTi 16v has started to run on three cylinders when ticking over. It runs fine at over 1200 rpm and goes well but I'd like it to tick over properly. Any ideas? Thanks Read more
Assuming you have replaced the distributor cap then I would do a compression test incase you have burnt a valve out. This swos up readily at tick over and much lesser effect at high rpm. Regards Peter

I have vague recollections of it being 5 litres. However, as you've already put 4 litres in, add a small amount (100 ml) at a time and keep checking the dipstick measurement.
