I need to drive from Oxford to Sheffield next Friday (1 July). Leaving Oxford around 4.30 pm. Any suggestions as to the least congested route? (I'd normally go A34, M40, A43, M1 etc but I'm dreading the M1 on a Friday afternoon).
Thanks in advance.

M40 then M/A42 and M1 ?
I think (though its a long time since I used those roads) that the attempt to avoid the M1 at that point just gets you snarled in local commuter traffic.
At least leaving at 4:30 (though is that central oxford ?) you are ahead of a lot. Sheffield won't be fun though.

For some reason the M1 is worst in the late afternoon between J24 and 28 northbound. You might try M40 / A43 / M1 to J24 (or M40 / A46 / M69, then off on to the A50 westbound (all dual carriageway) than A515, then eventually cross-country to Chersterfield and Sheffield. A pretty run once on the A515.

515 is hellish slow, and the run from Chesterfield into Sheffield isn't much fun at rush hour either. It takes me about an hour and a half to get to Doveridge from Sheffield, and that's when the traffic is ok.
I honestly think the M1 will get you there quickest, however congested it might be.

Thanks for the suggestions. I suspect I may end up in the M1 traffic jam. Guess I'd better pack plenty of music.
Thanks again

There are currently major roadworks and contraflows between junctions 29 and 30 of the M1 which will last until August - I was on the southbound carriageway at 7pm last Friday and the northbound queue was horrendous. Unfortunately there are few alternatives other than the M1 to get to Sheffield from the South so you'll have to grin and bear it!

Thanks for that daveyjp. Sounds like I'd better not make any plans for Friday evening.
