Hi,

Can anyone comment on ChipsAway outlet in Woking ? They actually call themselves WagenKraft Ltd and are part of ChipsAway franchise network.

I was unfortunate to scratch my car with a gate post at a friend's car park yesterday. It just was too low, so couldn't see it neither through mirrors nor through the back until it was too late. It left a medium sized dent and a few scratches in the fuel filler cap area (just above the bumper). It also left its white paint on the scratches.

It is not too bad, but one scratch near the bumper is down to bear metal. So, I'm concerned about rust setting in. Also, if I could get rid of that white paint. Doesn't look nice at all on a dark green car :-)

As the car is approaching 8th birthday I don't think the resale values matter a lot and I'm also hoping to run it for another couple of years.

Thanks

I had a job done by chipsaway and i was absolutely disgusted
****************************************************

I have to say that Chips Away in Benfleet did an absolutely superb job of repairing a 3 foot long scratch on my niece's Renault Megane (also black) after some kind soul decided to key her car all down one side where she had parked it to go to work. It cost her £300 but the work was absolutely superb, I looked at it myself afterwards and, although I knew where the scratch had been, I couldn't see or feel any trace if it whatsoever.

I think the problem with Chips Away and, no doubt, similar operations, is that they are all run as separate franchises, and, as such, some of the operators are very good but others are clearly not so good.

I am very sorry hayleychild that you have had such a bad experience.

Hi,

If I trade in a car and it turns out that it has problems, is there any comeback against me (apart from morally) after the sale if I'm truthful at the time of sale and the dealer doesn't use due dilligence to check the car? Read more

Don't pay the bill!!!!

I would suggest asking the dealer what they want to do first.

One of my customers was going to spend £500 in our service department to fix her car before trading it in once. I ended up telling her not to get it fixed and we would only reduce it's trade-in value by £350 as this was the amount that our service department would charge us to do the work.

I don't know the circumstances, age, or model of car that you are trading in, but perhaps the dealer can do something like that for you. They will no doubt appreciate your honesty.

Another thread suggested that an appropriate radio station for Rover owners was probably Kiss FM (alas).

The Honda Jazz brochures show it tuned to Jazz FM

Any other great ideas for associating stations with cars? I'll kick off with Classic FM for the e-type I'd like to buy one day! Read more

Morning all,

How much do you reckon to fix a tiny supermarket trolley ding in the drivers door of my MINI?

And where would be the best place to get it done?

Thanks very much in advance,

It happened to me last year in Sainsbury's while I was in my partners MX5 (would never have happened if it was my own car !) Anyway, I wanted a good job doing ( the car was almost brand new and I got more than enough earache over it) so I took it back to the supplying dealer. They don't have a bodyshop themselves, but for small dings they have a couple of blokes who come in when they have a few jobs for them. One does paint jobs ( he did mine for £40) and the other pulls out dents ( he charged me £45) and between them they made a brilliant job of it. One of the blokes at the garage told me they often get little repairs to do on their own cars and they don't mind 'good customers' getting jobs done at the same time. For £85 I was well pleased.

Ignoring my advice to buy a Honda Accord, my wife has bought a Seat Altea, which has rewarded us with its first problem, this has occurred 3 times now.
Driving along the motorway at a constant speed the ?EPC? and traction control/ESP lights come on and the car looses all power. The only fix is to coast to the hard shoulder, switch off and restart the car.

Before we take it to the dealer can anyone suggest what is going on, I am concerned that because the fault is intermittent the dealer won?t be able to fix it easily. Is this a known fault with any of the latest VAG cars?

Following on from Aprilias advice I would suggest taking it to the dealer as soon as you can after the fault next occurs. It might be that a fault code gets stored in an ecu (though in reality this is probably too much to hope for).

The most likely cause in my mind is a dodgy connection on the engine harness somewhere. Because this is a BIG job on most cars the dealer will try changing about a dozen other parts one at a time. This is exactly what happened to a friends Volvo S60 - it took 10 visits and numerous failures on busy motorways before a new engine harness cured all ills. And this is despite the fact that my mate is Engineering Manager for a well known designer & maker of automotive ecus and he told the dealers what was wrong on the first visit!!!!!!!

I wish you all the best with your problem.

Hi,
Got to fit a new radio/cd in a mk2 Rover 420 (old one broke), any suggestions for a good radio? and a place to buy. I have had a quick look on the net and I must say most of the radios on offer look so awful and chav like, the owner of the rover isn't going to like them. Also dose anyone know of ware you might get a Rover branded one? As I'm thinking there ones at least look ok and sound ok.

Many thanks,

James. Read more

Im going to a few BCA Auctions in the next month to get a feel for the market before buying my next car and I wonder if anyone can tell me what notice is given to buyers against Cat. C/D repaired cars?

I understand that they dont refuse to sell these cars but do they mention this in the info on the windscreen or only by the Auctioneers Description? Read more

T Lucas

Big daily rental companies like Hertz and Avis cover their own fleet for third parties,so if they think a car is not worth repairing it will be sold damaged.
These cars are often repaired and then sold on,and obviously these are not recorded with any insurance company or HPI etc.

Specifically my Zafira 1.6 - gauge seems to vary a lot. Do they have a floaty type thing or is it more technologically advanced than that? Read more

mjm

When you say "vary a lot", do you mean that the needle moves around a lot in normal driving? Most sender units in the tank have the float mounted in a damper tube to help give a steady reading. If your system is the same it may be that the tube has become detached.

In another thread HJ talks about 'wrong way round Tiptronics' being confusing.

Which way round is right and wrong? Mine (A4 multitronic) is forward (which is slightly upwards) for up and back for down, which I find perfectly intuitive.

Who's the maverick? Audi and I, or the other way round? Read more

Avant

Thank you so much HJ for taking the trouble to answer my question in detail.

I can see the logic of the forces on your body: maybe the German logic was to go by what is happening to the car rather than the driver. Acceleration - the car is being pushed forwards so forward for a higher gear; braking the opposite.

Mightily confusing if you drive lots of different cars as you do, and probably worse than swapping from auto to manual, which you know is going to be different. You do get used to it if you only drive one Tiptronic - even if it's illogical!
