Please will one of our legal BR members, or anyone else who knows, please tell me what decides whether non-payers of fines, parking tickets, congestion charge, speeding fines etc are sent to prison or have the bailiffs set upon them? Viv a vis the 159 mph police driver (Thread elsewhere) the D Tgraph today gave a list of what had happened to other speeders. This included the man who was fined and given points for doing 38 in a 30 limit. He said it was badly signed and refused to pay and got 7 days in prison. What decided that he could or should go to prison rather than having the bailiffs in to take away his TV or whatever, in settlement of the debt. I am asking because I am contemplating similar protest action and I want to know which way events might go! Read more

Please, RF, don't start that topic all over again. Us codgers might just rise in revolt. I'm not trading in my 2 litre Mégane for a scooter just yet.

My gf is looking to trade up from her Clio and she says she wants a new model Beetle, Does anyone have any experience of these cars? Are they reliable? I have done some research and I'd be looking for an early 99/00 one with a budget of around £5k.

I have read that there are problems with Oil Consumption on these engines? I was thinking of the 1.6L as it seems to be highly recom. for MPG. Is there any reason other than performance to choose a 2.0L? I gather that these engines are CamBelt driven, can anyone let me know what the change interval is please? Plastic tensioners breaking-Can these be changed independantly of the cambelt?

Also I've learned that when the Beetle first came on the market it was in the LHD model but I want to avoid this however I have read a few sites that say to check the VIN to see if the car is an original RHD???? What does that mean? Have they converted from LHD to RHD? Would that affect the resale value/Insurance/servicing of the car? Is there a particular code to look for in the VIN? Should I only accept Original UK cars? I presume it would say on the V5 if it is an import/registered as new in the UK after import within 6 months of Manu?

I also read in the cbc that a load of Beetles were dumped in the UK market without A/C, is it good to avoid cars without A/C?

And finally can I please ask if there are any other common faults that I should check for ?

All comments are much appreciated!

The 1.6 in the Beetle is the older 8v design, not the newer 16v one fitted to later Golf IV's which had a plastic water pump impeller - the one in the 1.6 Beetle is metal;

Cambelt change is at 60K - not expensive, even at my local VAG dealer.

The 1.6 was never available as L/H drive - only the 2.0, which was imported before the RHD models arrived.

In fact, VW actually ships the Beetle bodies for the 1.6 from the US without any engine, and fits the engine in Germany - I know, because when I ordered ours, which was had optional alloys and paint so wasn't a 'stock' car, it took ages to arrive...

Oil consumption on the 1.6 is fine.

Incidentally, there are THREE variations of the 1.8T engine - Throttle Cable from 1998-1999, Drive-By-Wire 2000, and Drive-By-Wire 2000 VVT late 2000.

With 9 points on my licence (12 mad days in may - 58 in a 50 limit, 38 in a 30 limit and OK 87 in a 70 limit) My habits have changed dramatically.

a) I drive in 3rd gear in town at less than 30 mph. Virtually everything on the road overtakes me. My inforad is always on. It's so easy to lose concentration but another 3 points would kill me.

b) I do 70 or now and again 75 on a motorway. Many cars overtake me. Now and again like on the M69 on monday last I sail past a mobile camera at 70 and feel really smug.

c) I do phenomenal miles per gallon. Its a 130 BHP Passat but I can do 60 mpg without trying.

d) I take trains wherever I can. I could travel from Leeds to cardiff in 3 hours on a sunday night with no traffic but going a little faster than the law says but now I take a train, read a book, do a sudoku and have a snooze and it takes 6 hours.

Life still goes on. It's a harsh lesson but I think I've learned it.

Wonder if any of you can help out.
I purchased a new PC about 6 months ago and in common with many now it came without a serial port which in the great scheme of things is no great problem, however......
My old reliable Casio personal organiser only works via a serial connection to talk to Outlook so SWMBO decided that she would buy me a nice shiny new Sharp one which works via USB. Only problem is I find the nice Sharp a real pain to use, my old Casio did exactly what I needed and was a doddle to use so I'd really like to go back to what I know.
I've had a quick trawl round Google and found that there are lots of USB-Serial convertors around ranging from modem type boxes to simple cable adaptors. But I have also seen some reports that some kit doesn't work with XP even though it says it does on the tin. Therefore working on the basis that a good recommendation is worth hours of Googling, has anyone here used such an animal or able to make a recommendation.

I'm using Outlook in Office Professional Edition 2003 with XP Home.

No, if he was doing that he wouldn't be able to post. What he did was delete them and so it had to recreate them.

My son's 18th birthday is fast approaching in June. Having racked our brains for a present, someone suggested a handheld GPS - he does a lot of walking, and also drives. As I know absolutely nothing about handheld GPS systems, can anyone comment on how useful they are in practice?

Having done a quick search on the web and this site, it seems that you can get combined GPS and PDA devices. Are they as good, or would I be better with a dedicated GPS device? And lastly, can anyone recommend one, as otherwise I'll be reading reviews & stabbing in the dark.....which is fine, but there's nothing like personal experience! Read more

Folks, hats off to you all for such excellent and informative replies. Looks like it's going to be as follows:
Singapore for 3 days.
North Queensland for 16 days (to stay with our friends, who emigrated last year and who we miss a lot!). While in N. Queensland, we may eat and drink to excess - this is normal.
Take in Great Barrier Reef, while it's still there.
Brisbane (connection via Sydney) to Bangkok.
Three days in Bangkok.
Overnight to London - depart around midnight local time, arrive Heathrow at 6.40 a.m.
We leave on June 30, return on July 25. Total cost for us both for the travel, £1636 through Qantas. We reckon on around £2200 all in. Bargain!

For those considering doing something similar, BOOK IT NOW!!! Prices for travel starting after 30 June jump up significantly.

Is there such stuff?

I have a perished petrol pipe and the garage I take the car to is 40 miles away and before I get there it will either a) burst completely b) i'll pass out due to the stench of petrol. I only noticed the petrol smell this morning (had to abandon trip to supermarket and go back home and get another car :-) ) and I can see the pipes around the petrol pump are cracked nastily and the one after the pump has wet marks on the paint below so it must be coming out there when the engine is running.

Well then,

There is your solution. Get him on the case. The pipe you want is at Halfords. They have counters with alternators, brake shoes, numberplates and suchlike. You go to the counter and tell the bloke or girl that they have fuel pipe on a roll. (It's like Woolworth's was years ago. Not their counter. Haven't a clue what's there. Are you sure? ) Yes. Black. half-inch diameter. "What did you say?" What is this "inch" ? Oh my!

Anyway. Folks know my opinions of Italian cars, so I won't digress further. Let me just say that this is a simple job.

Oh yes, and to get the air out, just use gravity. You know, one pipe above the other, till fuel comes, then whap it onto its spigot.

Good luck,

Sean

Hi,

I have a 1999 vectra 2.0 diesel (X20DTL engine).

Recently, I've had a problem starting from cold in that:

The car will turn over for a second or 2, run for a few seconds and then just stop. Then I have to turn the engine over 6-9 times (10 secs a go) to get it to start. Once started, it's OK.

From warm, it starts OK. Starting it 4-8 hours later is OK. Read more

Yes it did.
It has started first time, every time, every day since Saturday
I was waiting to see.

And I park facing uphill slightly 8-)

Thank for your help.
My wallet says thanks as well...

2 Months ago I had my nsf shock absorber changed at service by renault.

It was not right from the moment they changed it. Ended up getting a 4 wheel alignment done as they recommended, which was all done at my expense. Car now drives as you would expect on decent flat roads, but on rough ground or over man hole covers you feel the car twitch. I think this has something to do with my front nearside tyre wearing excessively more than the rest of my tyres.

Would the change of a single shock absorber be the reason for this wear?

The car is a 1.6 X reg done 66k Read more

with brakes and shockers you should always fit in pairs.

Hi,

As a regular reader of HJ's column in the ST I know how important it is to get timing belts replaced. Well SWMBO's 51 reg Fiesta 1.2 Zetec is coming up for its 50k service and according to the schedule this is the time for the belt to be chaged. Should I make sure the tensioner or anything else be changed at the same time?

Thanks for your advice. Read more

100,000/10 yrs is correct.
I did question this with the rep from Gates (A belt manufacturer.) and they said that the reason is so high/long, is because they designed it! So if they cant get it right, then who can?
