We have a 1.6 auto Golf which I suspect may have a problem developing with 3rd gear. Under normal acceleration through the gears, 3rd behaves a bit like a manual-box with a slipping clutch. As I accelerate in 3rd, the revs rise smoothly with increasing road speed, but then the revs drop by 200 to 300rpm, before rising smoothly again. There is then a large drop in revs as it changes into 4th. The car has done 57,000 miles. Would anyone know whether this is anything to worry about? I've only recently noticed this behaviour and it doesn't seem to do it all the time.

The gearbox oil has never been changed and the VW dealer told me it doesn't need changing as they're filled for life. This doesn't sit easily with me because I believe in frequent oil changes. There is no gearbox dipstick so I can't see whether the oil is a healthy colour, and the Haynes manual which shows a gearbox filler tube doesn't correlate with the car. I've searched in vain for level plugs, filler tubes and such like. Any advice will be much appreciated. Read more

Many thanks to you guys for that info - it's just what I needed. Time to get my overalls on - I'll report back! John.

Can nyou please recommend a good, secure conversion kit for central locking to remote central locking, preferably (easy)self-fit. I've seen several on the net quite cheap (#30 ) but have no idea of their quality and, in particular, which are the more secure ypes/makes. I'm sick of fumbling with keys and trying to avoid paintwork scratches!

Many thanks.

Hi,

www.vagparts.com do one for a Mk3 golf as an add-on. May be worth calling them to see if it will work on a polo. Just a thought.

My girlfriends Clio was parked at the side of the road on Monday, when an elderly gentleman who was driving unfortunately had a heart attack before crashing into her vehicle - causing a lot of damage.
Sadly he died as a result of the heart attack. The police are dealing with his insurance, and she should get his details tomorrow, so she can pass his details on.

As the vehicle was in a dangerous position (it ended up on the pathway and was immobile) it had to be taken away.

She has been given a courtesy car for 14 days as she has fully comp insurance. The insurance have offered her a very good price for the car(1200), which she accepted. As she is under 25 and in her first year of insurance her excess is 450.

Generally how long will it take for her to get the excess back as there is no question as to who is liable for the accident? She could borrow the 450 of someone, however she would not want to do that if it is likely to take months to get the excess back.

What can she do to ensure she gets this excess back ASAP as we wish to replace the car for an equivalent one - and when you are talking about small cars sub £1500 - 450 makes a lot of difference. Can her legal aid with the insurance make a difference?

Well after a month of phonecalls and waiting for police reports, the other drivers insurance company have now said that they are investigating his medical records - and if there is no history then they will not pay out.

So it looks like she will lose out bigtime

Can anyone tell me why there seems to be such a disparity between the valuations of the same model car using Parker's, AA and What Car?
e.g. Mazda 323 1.5GXi 5 door hatch 2000 Jan V reg 38k miles

Parkers
Franchised Dealer £3555 Independ dealer £3390 Private £3080

What Car
Dealer £4726 Private £4245

AA
£3,895 only one value given

There seems to be a large discrepancy in these values. Which is the most appropriate for this vehicle? It has AC, ABS, airbags elec sunroof, traction control, tinted glass, immobiliser, remote CL,rad cass, front EW Read more

Thanks for that. The garage where I have seen this Mazda is asking £4295 but that's before negotiation! It will come with 12 months MOT 12 months warranty and 12 months RAC membership plus a pre-sale service - and it is a garage I know well and trust.
The price doesn't seem too different from Glass's £4,200 which is nice to know!

When collecting your new car from a dealer, what would be the acceptable odometer reading? 2, 5, 10 miles? When would it become unacceptable?

Read about a case today with 180 miles on the clock which sounds wholly unsatisfactory to me. Read more

'Delivery Mileage' is something very personal I guess. But it is down to you as a consumer to make it clear how you want it delivered. I don't see why a car should literally be 'driven' to be delivered to your door - I would expect and demand that it be transported on a transporter or flatbed and delivered to me that way. Obviously, cost plays a part and if it was a question fo some 'delivery driver' dropping the car off to my home or me collecting it from a dealer - then I'd go with the self collection option.

In my limited experience I've found most large dealers will offer a flatbed service or collection from their premises at no extra cost. Personally speaking, if I'm buying a new car, then I'd like to go to the dealership to collect and inspect the car there with them present.

The distinction I would make here is that when I use the term 'new car' that is exactly what I mean: a factory order to my exact specifications - and with me as current and only keeper on the V5.

If I were buying say a pre-reg. car or a vehicle from a dealer as part of a 'bulk disposal' promotion then yes I would expect these cars to ahve more 'delivery miles' on them by their very nature. But if I'm paying for 'new' then I expect 'new'. Nothing more and nothing less - thats why I'm paying my money.

As cars build quality is getting better these days, what is considered to be High mileage for cars? Is it different for
Japanese cars compared to say Vauxhall/Ford?

Also which is better to buy....High Mileage cars that
have been run fully warmed up mainly on the motorway or Low Mileage ones used on the shopping run?????

I think that Low Mileage cars are better cos they have a proportionally less wear on the running gear of the car therefore
delaying bills such as Cambelt,Bearings,Gaitors,CV joints,Shocks not to mention starter motors/alternators.

Most people complain about the carbon buildup but surely thats negligible these days and what problems would result from carbon buildup? You would get rotting exhausts though.

Well, with cars older than 3 years or 60,000 it depends whether it's fleet high miler or private high miler. With fleet the chances are they kept servicing up to schedule. In private hands it can be tricky. Let's imagine you do 100 miles daily commuting plus annual holiday somewhere relatively far from where you live. You can easily clock up 30,000 miles every year. With typical modern car service schedule of 9,000 miles every single year you should let your car go through three typical services, where every third service should be major (or 3rd level) and include change of all possile liquids, cartridges, filters, pads and other consumables. How many people do you think will take their out of warranty car through 3 services a year, considering 3rd level service can cost anything between 300 and 700 pounds?

Unfortunately, a few months ago, my young Niece was caught by a Red Traffic Light Camera going through a red light. Apparently the time of the photograph is six seconds after the lights turned to Red. She is 20 years old.

I myself just expected nothing to happen, if, hopefully, the camera didn't have any film left, or she would receive the usual NIP with the offer of a fixed penalty 3 points plus a 3 point licence endorsement.

No such luck, unfortunately!

She has been trying to pay it as a fixed penalty offence, without any success, and now it transpires that the Police aren't prepared to offer the fixed penalty system for this offence and wish it to be taken further, presumably to court.

Can they do this, and, if so, do they have to give their reasons why?

Whilst in no way am I defensive of her actions (she only just missed hitting another emerging vehicle, so I understand) she was, at the time, driving to an Essex hospital to visit her beloved Grandfather, who she had been informed shortly before had been admitted with a very serious chest infection, which he subsequently died from shortly after this offence was committed.

I have to have some sympathy for her. I think she has suffered enough already.

Also, she is a recently qualified driver who, so I understand, can only take 3 points on her licence because at 6 points, as opposed to 12 points, they will take her licence away.

I have already suggested that she seek appropriate legal advice, but I just thought I would post this query on the BR to see what thoughts and ideas members had on this situation. I really wish we could put the clock back, but we can't.

If it does go to court do you think she would be better off mentioning to them about her Grandfathers situation or would she do better to keep quiet? There is, of course, always the chance that she could futher incriminate herself, e.g. admitting to driving without due care, or worse.

Does anyone else have experience of a similar camera situation, and could they possibly tell me what was the outcome?

Many thanks in advance.

Question MGF 1.8 VVC
Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

Got this one in for the usual head gasket failure. Can anyone shed some light on how to set up the VVC system. Are special tools needed? Thought about buying Haynes but they would probably regard it as beyond the scope of the DIYer.

I have been unsucessful in my attempts to find out whether the fitting of a reversing aid to my 2003 Honda Accord will affect my insurance premiums. All I can find out from TESCO insurance is that they will definately need to be informed if I fit this as it is regarded as a modification. Has anyone had any experience of this? It would seem to be self evident that the fitting of a safety aid would, if anything, decrease your premiums but nothing would surprise me. Just to confuse things, Tesco, for instance, have Insurance groups from 1 to 100 rather than the more conventional 1 to 20.

Tesco's final decision. I MUST inform them if I have sensors fitted but the premium will not be affected and there will be no admin charge. Wonder why they couldn't just tell me that in the first place?

Removing Door Hinges

I?m trying to change the driver?s door on a J92 Ford Fiesta Mk3. I?ve stripped the door down and removed everything so that the door is only connected to the car by the two hinges. I?ve bought the correct hinge pin removal tool from Sykes Pickavant, it fits but I can?t shift the pin. I guess been stuck in the hinge for 13 years its become clogged up with all types of gunge.

I?ve tried spaying WD40 around the pin and heating it up with a blowtorch but to no avail I just cant hammer the bleeding hinge pin out.

What would a professional do in these circumstances? Any advise greatly received.

Used a small angle grinder to cut the door off, and then cut through the side of the hinge connected to the door, cutting the pins in half. Once Id done this, I managed to knock the pieces of pin out for the top hinge, but had no such look with the bottom one, so I?m going to drill the hinge pin out, which is not easy and will take some serious drilling. If this doesn?t work, I?m going to pay some mobile mechanic to cut the hinge off the car body and weld a new one on. Not got any quotes for prices yet though.
