Not sure if you guys can help, but I'd appreciate any nuggets of info you can give me.

It's renewal time on my insurance, and I've got a few quotes for my reliable old Cavalier SRi, but they almost outweigh the value of the car.

I don't need to worry about people nicking or damaging my car as it's worth peanuts now, but obviously need cover. However, I do wish to retain my no claims for future purchases.

Is it therefore possible to get third-party cover which protects my no claims?

Driving past the Rheged Centre in the Lakes yesterday and I noticed a new Fiat Panda 4x4 pulling out. This was followed by another, and another, and another - something like 20-30 must have been around me, quite bizarre and very, very funny.

All with one driver only. Didn't notice if they had trade plates as I was too busy laughing.

I went past the first few and then noticed they all suddenly went into the right turn filter lane en masse, I suppose heading for some off-road track.

What was all this about then ?? Press day, mass testing, an invasion of Panda stealing low-lives ?

Was HJ there I wonder ?

driving 20 - 30 cars ? Impressive.

I think he means they didn't have SWMBO in the back seat :-)

Hi all,
My ford fiesta xr2i 1991 has an annoying headlight fault which i can't seem to find the problem to.
When i turn the main beam on, for normal driving in the dark, everything is fine on the 2 headlamps but one of the 4 front auxilary fog/flasher light has a very very low dim.

This isn't such an issue but when flash my dipped beam or leave it on permentley the left head lamp works fine but the drivers side headlamp has no light but returns, to a main beam, when i switch back to main beam.

I have tried all earth cables are fine, disconnected the aux lights on the front to no success, and i can hear the relay click when i use dippped beam so all seems fine. Any suggestions gratefully received as always.

Sounds like a defective connection allowing only high current flow. Disconnect and clean all connections is my advice: one by one. And recheck and clean earths...

Recently my mums car broke down and I have been trying to get it back running for her.

The car is turning over but just won't start. I have replaced the alternator, plugs, leads, and distributor arm/cap. I'm all out of ideas.

I hope someone can help.

On an M plate? Does not have any points but does have a rotor arm.

Does it make any difference if an engine is warm/hot or cold when changing a cam belt? I was speaking with someone who said it did. In my ignorance I have never thought it made sufficient difference to worry about. Surely if it did then garages would have to have cars in the day before a change to keep the engine cold . Just wondered what the correct procedure should be. Read more

Yes I agree but remember they use a special calibrated tool to set the tension so it is adequate when cold and correct when hot. A 90 turn with A finger and thumb is not. There are tools around that listen to the resonance of the belt to establish its tension. Often used at manufacture but in situ you can not always get them in even if you had one. Difficult but if it is your own can or a car you service regularly the belt tension should be rechecked anyway say at 6 or 10K miles. Regards Peter

Our wee Punto has gradually become a little hesitant with numerous flat spots. The garage says its fine but its only a shadow of its former self in terms of go and as i have to travel 200 miles in it next weekend I'd like to know what could be wrong. Any Fiat experts out there?? Cheers

If it runs on supermarket fuel all the time then a few fills of shell/BP/Total could also give an improvement. A dose of injector cleaner would also give it a good clean. There is no harm in checking the HT leads are all secure. If they're original then they are probably about due for a change and getting new ones should make a difference.

I'd also check the coolant level and make sure that it isn't losing any just in case the poor running is a first sign of gasket failure.

The new laptop is fab, only problem is McAffee, which is driving me mad and is set to be removed if it doesn't buck its ideas up ;)

I was a bit surprised to receive the hard drive from my old laptop in the post this morning, as I thought it was gone forever. Luckily I did back up all the important stuff before I sent the machine away, but there is some not so important stuff (photos etc) that I would like if possible.

How do I go about getting info off this hard drive then? Do I need to take it somewhere to be plugged into something and burnt to CD?

Had to drill out a bolt to remove (wouldnt turn at all, despite alot of persuasion, but rather remove the head.)

Head dropped off and item removed. I then had a small hole drilled all the way through the bolt, but cant get last bit out, before I can try the new bolt. To make matters worse I have now broken off a small drill bit in the hole!

Left job for today - going dark.

Any idea of how to proceed?

Another option for broken drill bits I used was a hollow diamond tipped drill - drilled cleanly round the outside of the broken bit. Only cost £9.99 on Ebay.
