I'm really after some general opinions/advice..
I'm looking to buy a 325i Coupe Sport along the following lines
Manual gearbox, leather interior
up to 1.5 years old
up to £23k
Any reasons why buying such a car is a bad idea eg resale value etc. Any suggestions as to where to buy such a car, is a BMW main dealer a good idea or simply over priced..
I have been offered a mystic blue manual 325i coupe sport with black leather (BMW head office car) through a main dealer which was registered in Dec 2003 and has 7k miles on for £24k. Seems like a reasonable deal to me although they wont negotiate down further, just wondered if other people agree.
All opinions gratefully received..

The other option is to get an E39 M5 - loads around for the price your looking to pay, won't lose much more value and loads of bang for your buck!
Wasn't sure whether to put this in discussion or technical but thought I'd pop in here for a bit, even though it will show up exactly how untechnical I am!
Polo is 8 years old this month, and has done almost 78,000 miles, more than half of them in the three years he's been with me. I have him serviced every 10,000 miles as per the book thing, but apart from that the only things I've done or had done are:
New brake disks, shoes (??) and pads Dec 2003.
Cam belt changed at 60,000 miles.
Front suspension bits replaced last year (something to do with arms and bushes? Crashed a week later so suspect it made little difference!)
New exhaust in January this year.
More new brake pads in August of this year, fitted by me under close supervision and yes they do work!
I always planned for Polo to get me through uni and then be replaced, but it looks like my heart is going to win over my head in the job search and I'm going to take a job I will love but doesn't pay well enough to change my car for about another year. I can't lie and tell you that I don't drive my car hard - I like to be first away from traffic lights, and he just seems happier at 80mph on the motorway than 70 - honestly! I've calmed down a lot recently but wonder if I've left it too late.
So..as Polo's life has been relatively free of mechanical trouble to date, and these things come along just when you don't need them, place your bets on what's going to break first! My money's on the clutch/gearbox, but PassatDriver thinks I will blow the head gasket first. Also, we disagree on whether I should be using unleaded optimax/ultimate (he says it's for newer cars?) or just the normal unleaded.
What tell tale signs should I be looking for, or can I just keep wearing my "I drive a VW, what could possibly go wrong" blinkers?
Thanks!

Any experience please of the 307 2.0 HDI, 02 onwards thanks Read more
Check in car by Car breakdown link, to our left.
But difficulty in obtaining starters/alternators seems to be continuing, known problem with them.
The mis-calculating mileometer saga, has been rectified, IIRC.
Plenty showing up in auction now - fetching OK prices, certainly not bargains, yet!!

I own a 1996 vauxhall vectra. The light bulb behind the mileage counter has blown just under the speed dial. I cant find a way to get the section of dashboard out so i can get to the blown light. I have been to my local vauxhall garage but they are asking just over £100 to do the job. Is there anyone out there that can give me some advice on how to get to the bulb please as i refuse to pay that sort of money just to repair a blown light bulb

thank you dynamic dave you are a star. Went to the site you mentioned and printed all the instructions. Thanks for the help mate.
Yesterday evening I took delivery of my first ever new car, a Citroen C8 with the 130bhp HDi engine and 6-speed box. It's lovely but I won't ramble on about the car; its features are well enough documented elsewhere. And, having test driven a C8 for a couple of hours, I have put my reservations about centrally placed instruments firmly to bed. What may interest you is a sketch of the buying process.
My starting point was wanting an MPV with more than 5 seats, heavy enought to tow our caravan and having an 8-year old Citroen Synergie and a 3-year old Mercedes c180 to part-ex and about £4K in cash. Reactions from dealers of other makes ranged from incredulity that I should be so difficult to deal with as to have 2 vehicles to part-ex, to complete indifference. So Fiat, Kia, Hyundai and Fiat ruled themselves out on the phone. This left Ford and Peugeot. The C8 seemed to offer more kit for your pound than Peugeot so they dropped down the list. I even got as far as a test drive in a new Galaxy but I didn't feel at home in it; the driving position didn't suit me, I would have preferred rear sliding doors and the part-ex offer on the Synergie was so poor it was almost an insult. I was expecting it; the same garage hadn't wanted my Citroen XM 7 years ago and a salesman had tried to studiously ignore me and Mrs H when we were looking for a car for her in 2002.
And so, due diligence thankfully done, I was able to give my dosh and cars to the local Citroen dealer and come away with my 18th Citroen (not all from them) and what a pleasant, painless experience it has all been, so far. In fact I got as far as ordering the car, specifying the extras and having a tow-bar fitted without even placing a deposit.
In the middle of this, my father-in-law happened to mention that he wanted to change his Xantia for a C3 sensodrive and the local dealer had the brass neck to take £100 off his credit card for the privilege of having a test drive. Is this normal nowadays? I suggested he claim his money back forthwith and deal with a more old-fashioned establishment. The upshot was that he collected his new car from our local dealer yesterday too. New tin and big grins all round.
Sorry for the long post; any comments anyone?

Renault 14 certainly did and the Renault 21 had two different wheelbases depending on whether the car had the 1.7 (transverse) or 2.1 (longitudinal) engine.
Hawkeye, I am surprised the local Hyundai dealer wasn't interested. My new Trajet would have p/xed against my old Volvo for a good price, but I got a better price privately. Just as easy to deal with as your Yorkshire man - you should have come to Red Rose country!
Hope you enjoy your C8 and that you have many years and miles of trouble free and economical motoring.

Hello
I have just been reading the various brake threads on here and have got a bit of a situation myself.
My Brake pad wear indicator has come on today and i've only done 17k miles, i do drive a bit fast and brake hard but wondered what the average expectancy was, i have got to try and put a case forward to my vehicle engineer at work monday, hes not going to be happy, especially when i got through a set of fron tyres in 14k.
Any views on a suggested approach would be good too!
Cheers

Why not try different brake pads (and discs?) intended for consistent hard use such as those from:
www.awesome-gti.co.uk/vw%20golfmk4/brakes.html

As for tyres, solid ones with a tread at least 20mm deep might prove more long lasting...:-)
Hello
for the past few days the orange engine warning light has been coming on intermitantly,(it pulses) after a few miles it goes out, sometimes coming on again. There seems to be no loss of power and no warnings showing on the computer screen.
The car is a 1999 with 106K on the clock with full history
Any ideas?
Cheers.

Best to have the codes read by someone, even the dealer may do it cheap if you wink and smile at the receptionist :o)
They charged me £34 once, and it only took him 5 mins sat in the drivers seat with his TECH2, as I was sat on a wall nearby spying on them.
Once you have the fault description and numbers, you should be able to repair it yourself, or search the net for the cause.
Has anyone noticed if the used car market has been slowing down in the last month. I`m trying to sell my MPV (a relatively popular model) at around £5k. Advertised it couple of weeks ago and quite a few phone calls but no viewings. Then recently reduced asking price by £500 and not a single bite Read more
Reduced another £400, now cheapest on autotrader for year & spec. Live next to junc 16, M4 so easy to get to. See what happens.
Hi Folks,
Question is, ive seen an Audi (52plate) 1.9TDi Sport at a dealers website going for £13,995, 50k on the clock (id presume thats mostly motorway mileage). Within the space of a few days via email (strange i know) his knocked it down by £500 as im offering no part-ex and thats without me seeing it. What price should i realstically look at paying, keeping in mind ive seen all the book prices etc, just wanted some expert opinions out in the car trade who might think otherwise or might think of better ways of acquiring this type of car at a cheaper price? All opinions welcome to give me some idea?
Thanks Read more

I have a 1996 1.4, the throttle pedal just feels what I would call normal. I'd agree with the others - stick in a new cable & the problem is 99% likely to go away.
