A colleague is currently deciding whether to go for a manual 2000 pre-facelift 523iSE 2.5L or a manual 2000 post-facelift 520iSE 2.2L

His budget is under £10,000 and he wants leather. He does not want to pay the extra insurance or petrol bills of a 525i, 528i or 530i as he spends most of his time in London, though he soemtimes enters road rallies with me.

He asked me if there is any difference between the facelifts in terms of
1) interior equipment and decorations
2) performance
3) fuel economy
4) gearbox & suspension

I really don't know what is the difference, if any, as my only drive was a 1996 520iSE, which was good but could do with a little more power.

IIRC it was around 1999 that BMW upgraded the variable valve timing units on their 6cyl engines from "single" to "double" VANOS, this certainly gave a better mid-range and (perhaps marginally) better economy.

So if it's a 523 from that period make sure it's got double VANOS.

Since having the front discs and pads changed, I have a steering shake at 70 mph. All Wheels have been rebalanced to little benefit. Any ideas, apart from faulty discs, which the garage deny? Read more

colin_90

All balancing was done off the car, as I said before car is automatic front wheel drive, so should not have wheels spun faster that 30mph. But to end the saga. After much aurgumnt with the garage they agreed to change discs once more and hey presto, all is fine again. Can only conclude that the actual discs were 'unbalanced'.

I've had my new Accord for almost eight weeks now and I'm very satisfied with it. However, this is my first diesel, and it seems very high geared - less than 1,000rpm at 30mph in top.

Will I be damaging the engine by travelling at 30 in top gear - I do stick to speed limits around town - or should I leave it in fourth? Read more

Judging by the amount of customers who come in asking for one, yes, they will, eventually!

I'm looking forward to when they finally stick the 2.2 unit into the CRV, that will make that car so much more affordable and attractive to customers.

Sorry if this has been discussed before but im getting a variety of figures when it comes to how much the C200 Komp does on average around city and combined. Any current owners etc able to tell me from experience what they are like as im on the verge of buying one next month?

can anyone help? At about 80 mph in 5th gear or sometimes if I accelerate hard in a lower gear the power suddenly dips and car then feels as if the bhp has dropped by about 50%. If I switch off restart the engine it rights itself, had the turbo checked and it seems OK. is this an electronics fault? Anyone know? Read more

Golf TDi bluemotion 2009 plate
Whilst running the engine switches off - eventually does not start.

Hi, could someone please help and advise me: I have recently bought a golf diesel - bluemotion model on 09 plate. The mileage is around -115k. I bought the car just under a week ago, privately so no return policy !

I drove the car 40 miles on route back - I started the car the other day and I heard like a missing sound after a few minutes and then the engine turned off. I restarted the engine and a few seconds later it switched off. Third time the car wouldn't start. So I left it. The next day I checking the water and oil, which was fine. The car started but the same problem accurd.

To me it sounds the car is being starved fuel - but wanted to see if someone has had the same issue ?

Oh, what a fun day I had yesterday !

Early morning to work, my Corolla 2001 (incorporating noisy gearbox, as posted previously) decides today is the day to go ... nearly have nasty accident as screeching sound emanates, and my speed drops from 60 to 30 VERY quickly - 38 Tonner nearly drives into me ... :-( Once I pulled in, the gearbox wouldn't engage at all, and had a noise like metal ripping together. And you can hardly move the car, even with the clutch in.

Oh dear.

RAC pick me up, and I spend the rest of the day trying to get repair sorted ... difficult, as the garages can't quote without seeing the car, and that involves getting the RAC to move it.

Toyota = "new gearbox £1200 + labour" ! Sent the car to Trade Transmissions at Peterborough - anyone used them ? Hoping to get the box (if it is that) re-built, for less ! Not impressed - car is 3.5 years old. More concerning, the recovery man told me he's had 5 Corolla recently, all with the same fault.... Could it be the clutch, or diff ?

Any advice MOST appreciated ! Read more

I have been tell Volkswagen for 3 years that the wheels fall off their cars, I have had a website at between number 2 and 7 on a Volkswagen Golf search in Google for 2 years. The problem with these cars is the shaft fails in Fatigue it is then retained by the bearing until sideload is great enough to seperate it and the wheel comes off,the natural reaction is to brake and the car spins out of control on the remaining wheel. Take a look at my site @ www.btinternet.com/~david.bailey19/home.page1.htm

Caught wind of this:
a report by Napier University for "Virtual Fleet Risk manager":

www.vfrm.com

... where it is claimed that:

1% of drivers cause 10% of accidents
2% of drivers cause 20% of accidents
5% of drivers cause 45% of accidents

There is a little about it in the validation study link. The full report isn't online yet but I think you can ring up/mail for a copy.

Do we bother educating these 5% to be better drivers or do we just remove them from the roads altogether? How do we identify them *before* they cause havoc?

However, if you had never exceeded 45mph then you would most likely be unsafe at 60 mph.
A declining proportion of today's drivers have exceeded 70mph and therefore are at the top of their learning curve when driving at that speed.
Someone who has experience of driving at 90 or 100mph will be more relaxed and in better control at a lower speed.
It's called experience and people aren't getting it.
