Hi once again! More problems with my citroen ax, after recently getting a new clutch and exhaust fitted!

My problem is that as I was coming up the road this evening, my accelerator pedal stuck so I couldn't release it to slow down - I had to put my foot on the clutch to disengage. It only happened for a couple of seconds and then popped up again, thankfully, but it gave me quite a scare...

Can anyone give a hint as to what might have caused this - (I'm not sure if this is connected, but if I'm approaching a turn-in/junction in 1st gear and slip into neutral, the car seems to rev a bit before idling)

Thanks in advance for reading the post and for any hints before I get back into the thing again :-)

I can't comment on the AX as I am not familiar with the set up. But it is a relitively simple car, so it may be very easy to do. A Haynes manual (Your local library have them) will show all. On my Solara, it was very easy, just like a bicycle, ie. one holding nut at the carb end which pinched the inner cable tight. Undo this and pull out cable. Thread new cable in, pull up slack and tighten pinch nut. Thats all. I think a new cable was about £3-4 many years ago. They really are similar to a bicycle brake cable. Greasing the inner cable is the key. A garage may not be too bothered with this messy part. A pity as it is crucial.

I am shortly having to sell my Legacy GLS Estate (my third) due to purchase of new business which necessitates running a commercial. The purchase includes a sign written van so I need to sell privately within the next 4 to 6 weeks.
Parkers guide recommends £3025 for a private sale and £3295 from a main dealer. However, my local dealer has a 97 P on the forecourt at £4995!! older than mine and without my elec sunroof.I was told to advertise above £4k and reduce to £4k, which seems very optimistic. These figures are way in excess of Parkers, so rather than waste time and money advertising in various sources, should I try Autotrader only and at what realistic price? The stats are 98R, MOT Dec, tax Nov, 83k miles, 4 brand new tyres, never abused.
Just how accurate is Parkers, because the price diff between a guaranteed car from a dealer, and a private sale, albeit with fsh and warranted mileage, seems minimal?

Legacies, even estates, seem hard to sell. I don't think comparison with one at a dealers it that useful, TBH, since many people will pay a huge premium for a car from a fracnchised dealer.

Why not try the eBay route?

I own a little 125cc 4 stroke scooter (yamaha) and have always wondered how long the engines last in terms of mileage. I have covered 20,000 miles in two years very reliably, and have changed the oil very regularly i.e. between every 1-2000 miles. Also, it usually gets long journeys that are always more than 5 miles.

So, does anybody know here how long I should expect my scooter to last, and what problems I am likely to get from it? Read more

I would say that Greg's scooter will indeed outlast him if he continues to worry this much about it. 8-)

Snotty message from insurance company to call them. (Dear reader, you may recall, I had 2 A-reg Mercedes 230TE W123s pinched in a 4 week period.)

'Hello, this is mapmaker'
'Hello why didn't you tell us your car was recovered'
'Was it?'
'Yes. You should have told us. Why didn't you tell us? You're required to tell us if it is; we've paid out [no they haven't, but that's a separate issue] so it belongs to us.'
'Errrr. Which vehicle?'
'The Mercedes 230TE'
'What registration number'
'A111AAA'
Me: 'When was it receovered?'
'Well it was stolen again so it must have been'
'No it wasn't'
'Oh yes it was'
'[It's behind you!] No it wasn't, that was a different car.'
'No it wasn't, that was a 230TE.'
'Yes, and what was it's registration number?'
'A222AAA'
'And what what the reg of the first theft?
'A111AAA'
'Oh. They're different. Well, that was it, no more questions thank you for calling.'
'Well done!'

funny, why didn't I think of that... :)

Different insurance company, new problem. Renewal coming up very soon. Insurance has gone up owing to 'the accident'. 'The accident', about which I've already had correspondence with the insurance company, happened last July, before we acquired the vehicle. Pointed out to them, twice now that they weren't insuring the vehicle at the point it is alleged to have had an accident. They've asked for copy of V5 to show that it wasn't in our ownership at the time of the accident. Given they weren't insuring it, cannot understand how they've even got this far. Being commercial insurance, I have my own broker whom I know by name, and we normally get excellent personal service.

My car was stolen off my drive by joy riders and was recovered by the police, they took it away as evidence and for finger printing - i haven't seen my car but from what they have said it sounds like it may be a "write off" as it was involved in an accident and they continued driving it when the front wheel tyre came off... anyway cutting a long story short, i have been in contract with my insurers and they asked if i had an up to date MOT certificate, at the time i thought it was still valid, having now had a look at it, it is a 6 weeks out of date!! I haven't come clean yet with my insurers and don't know what to do ... i've read other comments on this forum and it looks like the only topic spoken about are owners who have been involved in an accident with there cars - not any stolen off their driveway.... NB i am a new user of this forum so apols if i'm wrong!

I don't know if it helps, but last year I got £3200 for a written off Nissan Micra 1.3 GX 1999 T reg with 70k miles. I would say this Micra is broadly comparable with your car. Both are top of their respective ranges. My Micra was slightly newer but your Fiesta had much lower mileage.

Hi,

I've an Oct03 new megane saloon. So far it's been 5 times back to the dealer because of water getting into the plastic bottomed boot.

Each time it's come back, no better than before.....

Anyone else had this experience??? Know what needs to be done to resolve?

Cheers,

It's water for the dog.

Seriously, talc or flour spread around is good at showing up where the water leaks are, if you don't want to be done for imprisoning minors.

And check your sunroof drains work - by pouring water down the drains and watching for where it comes out.

Will the central locking from a fiesta zetec work in the ford ka? I am looking for a cheap way of putting central locking into my ka. And the kits that are available are quite exspensive compared to how much I can get the units from a breakers yard. If not is there any other way of doing it as the ka has cable operated locks

Hi,

recently bought a 414 SLi with 76k miles for £500, and it's been running well, albeit with a knackered exhaust. I've noticed a couple of quirks and am just wondering what they could be....

1) When putting my foot down in first gear (and occasionally second) a light on the dash flickers on (the light that is on when you have the handbrake on). No change in power/running at all. Is this just another of Rovers electrical oddities?

2) The front driver's side of the car seems to sit a little lower than the passenger side...no more than 1/2 an inch or so. The shock absorber seems ok (balances out after one dip etc). Is this just a case of the shock being on it's way out?

Ta in advance!

It`s unlikely the problem would be down to wheel bearing but then not impossible.I would suggest getting tracking done.as the bearings on the rover are fairly reliable.front wishbone bushes may cause it.I noticed you did not mention if there was any play in track rod ends.but as you said no side to side movement could point to wishbone bushes.but need a bit more info.usually if trackrod ends are at fault you will hear it?

On a three year-old Peugeot 306 cabrio the rear plastic window is coming unstuck in a couple of places. My question is: what type of glue should I use to re-glue the plastic to the hood?
I don\'t want to melt the plastic.

Is there any requirement to test lights and indicator functionality using more than one function at a time during the MOT test?

The reason I question this is that I frequently see rear lights of cars that would pass the MOT test (all bulbs fitted and operational) if each function (rear lights, brake lights, fog lights, indicators, reversing) was tested independently..

BUT if the car is indicating for a turn and the driver applies the brakes then the indicator stops working, the brake light starts flashing or some other odd combination.

An electrical fault like this will not be picked up by the MOT test as I understand it is performed?
