yesterday i took my astra 1.4 to manchester airport, I spent £6.50 on fuel,72p a litre and i covered 98 miles till the fuel warning light came on, on the motorway i was travelling an average 62 m.ph, i reckon for a petrol car with four adults my car gave about 45 mpg,question to you guys is it more economical to drive at a constant 60 than go flat out 80-90 mph, saving time, but would i still be driving economically at faster speed?

Hi folks, I think one of the cooling fans on my 97 306 xtdt has come loose as i can just see the top of the left hand fan (viewed from the front) and it has definatley come loose. Is this a big repair job on the 306, as it looks like the radiator needs to come out or the bumper off? Sorry if this has been posted before.

Can anyone give pointers on a hub nut tool for a \'96 Trooper, please? Nothing else found on the web...
I have the dimensions from another list. I don\'t really have time to make one. Isuzu won\'t sell one to me. (Or maybe I need to make time..any suggestions on how to do this welcome.)
Is there a \"generic\" one?
The nut is recessed and is a \"castle\" type with notches.

Oh yes, and while I remember, it needs a special LSD oil in the diff. EP90 wrecks the limited slip diff.
The oil? A Shell concotion made in only one refinery in the world especially for Isuzu. Cost? Around £5/ltr.
There is precious little on the web about DIY.

I was reading in the Archives and came across quite a few discussions regarding Battert replacement,however there wasnt anything said regarding the VW Polo 1.6L aUTO 1997.
I posted a question there,but mabe because its the Archives no one sees it. Anyway here is my question i hope someone will know something about this.
Ok so i have read all the posts here,(this relates to the Archieves) but can i ask about a VW Polo 1997 1.6L Auto,does anyone know about the results if changing its battery,i know that the Radio will have to be reset,but what about the rest of the memory of the ECU?? WILL THIS STILL BE ok??
As the VW isnt mentioned at these posts i hope there is someone who really knows about them.

I have been interested in comments that good fuel economy comes from good servicing and responsible driving.
However, when coming to servicing, what is important to have changed or looked at to maintain economy. Coming to mind may be air filter changes and cleaned, oil change (pistons and rings), changing timing belt on time.
What other items need to be taken up at service to maintain economy in the long run. Just a SH is not enough, and knowing what items need inspecting means I can probably check the servicing quality myself to some extent.
Also, what driving techniques are important to maintain good fuel economy e.g. quick gearchanges, low revs etc
Any comments would be really helpful.
Also, where can I get information about old cars e.g. max torque, max speed, MPG, (the official stuff). Read more

I am considering purchasing a T reg BMW 318, but after reading threads on this forum about people who have experienced people reacting to them differently just becuase they drive a BMW - overtaking you just to prove a point etc - I am wondering whether it's wise. Could anyone tell me if this has happened to them/whether it happens often/whether it has detracted from owing a BMW. I was stuck in a traffic jam on the A1 last week. There were 4 BMW 3 series waiting in a line, and behind them were 3 Audi A4's (new shape).
..spooky..but methinks that the 3 series is just a bit too common, as is the lovely A4.
Just out of interest - has anyone got any recent experience of these wizard companies who claim to sort out all your little parking dings, stonechips, plastic bumper repair etc??
If so, have the repairs been successful and good value for money?
Calling a guy out later this week to do a makeover to my front bumper and also assess a minor lacquer peel situation. Really hoping he can work some magic without having to re-spray...

From experience, the wizard companies can do good jobs but only minor scuffs. However, I used one site in sussex who only does such jobs with a landline number and professional people who were in the past mechanics. I would not use a mobile one though.
But, in a lot of cases you can try to repair the car yourself if they are very small scratches etc. But it is best always to take your time and don\'t touch up big scraches as they look worse!
In terms of value for money, they are sure cheaper than the big ones. I paid £50 for a full bumper respray and touching up throughout the car which made it look like new. And it was a very good job.
The most important thing is to use competent people, so it is worth looking around and asking related questions at each.
Defender went in for its MoT today to the local LR Centre (I, know, I know). Anyway they gave me a 2000 mile old 03 Fr**lander, first time I'd ever driven one. What an awful thing. Dismal instruments, poor radio, interior like an 80s Montego, to add insulst to injury its brake lights were stuck on. Glad to get shot of it and pick up the rattly old bus, which passed its MoT and was probably more street-legal than the other thing. Yuck. Read more

The engine management warning light on my P reg 2litre Omega (Manual)has started to come on after driving a mile or so and generally stays on thereafter. I have heard this is a common problem with most Vauxhalls. Any ideas or is a trip to the main dealer required to sort out the problem?
One suggestion is that this may be most likely a wiring or earthing fault which I have heard is very common with Vauxhalls/Opels. Sound reasonable?
Perhaps the sensor on the timing belt?

thanks to everyone who responded. Unfortunately the Gunson Tool appears not to cover this model (1996). To help anyone else with this problem in the future, it was a faulty oxygen sensor on the exhaust that was triggering the warning light.
How do you clamp the fuel line when you change the filter? is it a two-man job? or is there a simple tool that i have forgotten to use for it! last time i tried i spilt fuel everywhere!

joosisqu, I think we might be talking about two different filter systems here.
I assumed that we were discussing in-line cartridge filters as used on some petrol cars and which are typically located below the fuel tank level. Presumably the fuel could spill out of these until the tank is empty?
I agree that there is unlikely to be much spillage from diesel (or petrol) filters that are located in the engine compartment above tank level.

at 80mph, approx 50% more fuel will be used as at 60mph.
