The engine management warning light on my P reg 2litre Omega (Manual)has started to come on after driving a mile or so and generally stays on thereafter. I have heard this is a common problem with most Vauxhalls. Any ideas or is a trip to the main dealer required to sort out the problem?
One suggestion is that this may be most likely a wiring or earthing fault which I have heard is very common with Vauxhalls/Opels. Sound reasonable?
Perhaps the sensor on the timing belt?
Thanks

Just need to read the code (gunson tool)from the orange dashboard symbol is the cheapest way.

Er, no. The cheapest way is a paperclip and a visit to the following site ;o)
The ECU fault codes are listed here, with instructions of how to access them.

below the steering wheel where the fuses are there is a black 10 pin plug socket I believe this to the the ECU interigation socket.
If you link out pins A and B with a small wire and turn on the ignition (but do not start the car)the management lamp will first flash 12 times probably 1 flash then followed by 2 flashes but this is your crankcase sensor , ignore this as its detecting the engine not running, if there is any more flashes then the code will refer to a particular sensor.
I dont have a list of what code is what sensor but they are on the net

Most likely the crank shaft sensor, mine done the same and then went off once you reset the ignition. Being an auto it caused the gear shifts to misbehave and I sometimes found myself either in too high a gear when starting off or suddently dropping too low a gear during kick down! The bad news is that it cost me £237 to get it fixed, seems a bit of a rip off for a sensor!!

thanks to everyone who responded. Unfortunately the Gunson Tool appears not to cover this model (1996). To help anyone else with this problem in the future, it was a faulty oxygen sensor on the exhaust that was triggering the warning light.
