My 307 90bhp Hdi(diesel) judders on start-up, always first thing in the morning at first start. The whole car, on idle, will judder, particularly noticeable in the driver seat. After some 5-10 mins, when the engine has warmed, the judder completely subsides. If the morning is warm,ie, the sun is out, and the temperature not so cold, the judder is still there, but less marked.
I am not mechanically minded, will welcome any suggestions.
Thanks.

Thank you for your comments.
The car is used for relatively short city journeys, however, I do the occassional long run in it (motorway), and the judder is still there after the car has cooled down, and I go to re-start it again???
Maybe I will get it checked at a Peugeot dealer - will keep you posted !

...and I am that mug!

Is there someone in technical who can give mea reasonably idiot-proof guide to how climate control systems like VW's Climatronic work, what happens on the econ. setting, and how to treat it well, make it last and generally look after it?

Cheers in advance. Read more

In the Mk IV Golf I got rid of recently the system never seemed to vary the fan speed, and it was left to me to do that. In the Passat I now have the system does vary the fan speed. So was the Golf climatronic dodgy, or have they changed the way things work?

I have a 2000 Fiat Punto 1.2 which has had it's head gasket blow at 36000 miles. This seems an unreasonably low mileage for this to happen, has anyone else had this happen to this model car at such a low mileage? Read more

Just out of interest, how often should coolant actually be changed on these engines? I've checked the service schedule and it doesn't mention changing coolant at all, merely topping it up if the need arises.

My Picasso was reg' in Sept.'02 and has an intermittent fault which shows up after driving on the over run and coming to a roundabout the engine wont pick up for seconds just as you are pulling out into the traffic stream. Then it suddenly takes off like a bat out of hell. This seems to be happening to a good few people off another site but dealers seem unable to find any fault.

Would appreciate any thoughts to overcome this potentially dangerous fault. Read more

The large circular plastic housing (about 3" diameter) staring you in the face right in front of the engine beside the main fuel pump. It will swell when the ignition is switched on. If it does then the in tank pump's working.

Does anyone have any experience of the oil consumption of a Golf TDI.

My wife's car (9 months old) has just required 2.5 litres of oil after 12,000 miles. (I work overseas so the oil level had not been checked - and the wife is not very mechanical!)

The low oil level was only recognised when the low oil warning light came on and it then required 2.5 litres to get back to the full level - or so I am told.

Would any damage have been done by letting the oil get this low? Read more

Why am I still getting flyers for these products. Everyone knows they dont work yet the claim is there in black and white ' allows the safe use of unleaded fuel in four star engines' together with 'tested, trusted and recommended' and 'is sold and recommended by more of the uk motor trade than any other product. How are they getting away with it?

I've just taken a look at the Broquet website. It's an extremely clever bit of marketing ... I almost fell for it myself (joke!).

Apparently the device was produced for the Hurricane engines, not Spitfire. Everything else I have said stands without question!

All belts recently replaced on our L-reg Mitsubishi Chariot (import). But we keep having to go back to the garage because the belt(s) keep screeching, and the garage says Mitsubishi are (in)famous for this. Any suggestions I can pass on to them? Read more

I've used honey for years - does not appear to degrade the belts (use very sparingly and is often present when a new belt is fitted).
NB
This does NOT apply to loose belts which should be adjusted first.

i have a 97 e-class. The windscreen was recently replaced by Autoglass due to stone crack. Even though the rain sensor has been connected up (and checked by Autoglass) the wipers run continually when put onto the intermittent (rain sensor) setting - even when dry! I have cleaned the windscreen but no joy.

all Autoglass say is take it to a Mercedes main dealer.

Any thoughts or help??

thanks.

I seem to have 9 optical sensors on the windscreen of my Merc and the whole systems works very well. You just set it to auto and leave it and it will adjust very well.

Can anybody advise,
a mate of mine has a ford which has done 60,000 and is 4 1/2 years old and hasn\'t missed a service. The timing belt has snapped causing a fair bit of damage. Whilst reading his maintenance handbook he read that the timing belt should be changed at 80,000 miles or 5 years.
As his car was within this recommendation when the belt snapped,
he phoned ford for financial help towards the cost of repairs, because he felt fords recommendation (which he followed), was incorrect and had contributed toward the failure.
In a nutshell ford told to him to go away!.
WOULD ANYONE KNOW IF HE HAS A CASE AGAINST FORD because he feels he has followed fords service guidlines all along, and if he thought the timing belt wouldn\'t have lasted in accordance with fords guidelines, he would have changed it earlier.
thanks

Too true, but I don't like unexpected bills that have not been budgeted for. When we bought the Vectra we also paid for Vauxhall's 'sure guard warranty' (this was the days of the 12 months warranty) that offered comprehensive cover against costly repairs for as long as we were expecting to keep the car. All we then had to then worry about was the normal running costs and servicing. To take the car in for a service and then be told they have changed their minds about when the timing belt should be changed and they wanted another 400 quid off us was a bit hard to take. I think HJ has made mention that Mondeos can stretch to 80,000 on the original belt and if we were aware of the issues above when we were buying, we would probably gone for a Ford

I have a astra 1.4i 94, when cold it idles at exactly 1000 revs then settles down to 700 revs, my problem is that the when i engage 1st gear and without touching the gas pedal the cars moves after depressing the clutch down the tacho reads 2000 revs then settles down to 700revs is that normal? How would I know which injection system I have,

More than likely the GM-Multec MPi, but if you use the link I posted above, the fault codes are the same as for the GM-Multec CFi anyway.
also as stated maybe its normal for vauxhall cars to let the
ecu prevent it from stalling but like you said mike is that
normal for other makes, to stop you from stalling, I find
it dangerous as the last car I had was honda civic
1985 1.3 with manual choke if i stalled it stalled...

Rather than just letting the car tickover when you lift the clutch, apply a small amount of throttle and slip the clutch when manouvering. It's really a case of throttle and clutch control really. We were all taught that when we learnt to drive. By applying a small amount of throttle will overcome the problem of the ecu trying to keep the engine ticking over and thus preventing the revving you're currently getting by loading the engine at tickover.
