FastShow

I posted this earlier today on another forum I frequent and one of the regulars suggested I post here for more advice. So, any ideas:

Bought a new car a year ago now, everything with it was perfect and I didn't have a spot of trouble with it in the first 10k miles at all aside from a buzzing rear speaker which wasn't ever a huge issue as it was under warranty.

As 10k miles drew near, I booked it into the 'local' dealership (by local, I mean the nearest one which is a good 25 or 30 miles from my house) to get it serviced and to fix a minor imperfection on the passenger leather seat. No problem, said they and toddled off to do the work.

Picked the car up after the service after having wandered aimlessly around town for a while due to their refusal of a courtesy car for servicing work and found they'd arranged to order a new seat cover and speaker to replace. This was slightly irritating as they knew about the speaker and could have ordered it well before then, but hey, these things happen.

From there it went down hill and I'll just bullet point the rest because otherwise I'd literally be here all week typing:

* 5 weeks of constant chasing with not one courtesy call from the garage to let me know what was going on with the parts ordered
* Loads of phonecalls to SEAT headoffice to get the dealership chased and the parts brought in
* 6 or so weeks in, the parts were finally arrived and I booked the car in for the work. The speaker was swapped as was the seat cover. To say the new seat cover looked rubbish would be an understatement of epic proportions. It was baggy, creased, didn't fit the seat and just looked absolutely naff. The service manager even had the audacity to tell me it was supposed to be like that and there was nothing he could do as, "All cows were different" so the seats would never match.
* The speaker started to buzz again within five minutes of leaving the dealership
* I found they'd bust all the electric motors on the seat a couple of days later
* 3 or 4 weeks later they got another seat cover in for me to look at and decide whether I wanted it fitted or not. It looked just as bad as the last one and they could offer no assurances that it'd be better fitted, so I declined. They then decided I'd have to have the area manager to look at the car to decide where to go from here
* Loads more phone calls and another 2 or 3 weeks later, I get a visit from the guy who all but laughs at the workmanship of the recovering and gets the dealership to order in a brand new base and tells them they need to investigate the speaker problem. I was also promised a decent courtesy car for the duration of the work
* Parts finally arrived after loads more chasing, during which time the dealership never contacted me at all. Spoke to the dealer, sorted out a courtesy car and turned up a week later (the earliest they could get me in) to be told my courtesy car was a 1 litre Suzuki Swift - a far cry from the 1.8T I'd took in. This was also despite the promises of a courtesy vehicle of 'comparable standard' to my own
* Finally got it booked in for the work to be done last week and they've swapped the seat cover and speaker again only for it to be almost identical to their last effort. This is some 18 weeks after the first lot of work was done

And basically, for those of you still awake, that's where I am now - a car that was knackered by the dealership and one that seems will never be fixed. Not only that, but I've had to visit the dealership 6 times so far, so that's 350-odd miles on the car (vehicle running costs are listed at 51p/mile, so it ain't cheap either) and a good 12 or so hours of my time wasted, if not more. The annoying thing is, the car was perfect before I ever let the dealer near it.

That's it - just wanted to vent really. Read more

Ah well, I tried!

Question Tyre life
Miller

I have recently bought a Mondeo fitted with 205 55 15 tyres. Current mileage is 39k and according to past service bills the two front tyres were replaced at 35k, yet I think I will be lucky to get another 2k out of them before they need replacing!

Is this acceptable? The tyres are Dunlop Sp2000 if that makes any difference, and before anyone says so I am sure the car has not been clocked since they were fitted. The front tyres on my old ZX had nearly 20k under them when I got rid of it and still looked good for 5-10k more! Read more

The dealer may have swapped them if another customer had complained about the heavy wear on the tyres (that were originally on the car he was purchasing). I know of an example of this at one of the big car supermarkets. You should be able to check whether the original wheels are fitted to the car by the manufacturing date stamped on the wheels (or cast on if alloys), this should tie up with dates stamped on various body panels on the car. Also does the servicing invoice show the size of tyre fitted and is it the same.

Ferrino

I have recently been experiencing really hesitant acceleration on my '97 Corsa (1.2l 8V single-point fuel injection).

Throttle response has really deteriorated and has got to the point where I can sometimes floor the throttle and get zero rise in engine revs! It usually happens when I get back onto the throttle after changing gears - there is a lag phase when there is no response, and then suddenly the engine kicks in! I usually have to hold the throttle down and just wait for the power to return!

I am at a loss to figure out why this happens - it is as if the fuel injector is being starved of fuel for a moment and then suddenly the fuel arrives. Or perhaps starved of air for a moment?

The ignition is fine - I replaced the plugs today.

Can anyone help out?

Cheers! Read more

Thanks a lot for the advice - I am pretty sure the MIL light is not coming on, but I will double-check! I will perform the silencer and sensor checks which you detailed (where possible).

I was wondering where the best place to get the electronics checked out is? Is it best to go to my Vauxhall dealer, or will any garage do the checks?

By the way, I have also checked all air trunking from the air filter box to the throttle body for breaks/tears which may disturb the induction vacuum (or whatever it is), but this doesn't appear to be faulty.

Many thanks.

I had a recon. alternator fitted to my 1.7D Astra (Isuzu engine) at the week end. The relay in the footwell was changed and the wiring checked. However there seems to be a fluctuation in the output. I noticed yesterday that the rev counter was fine at 70 mph (approx 2700 revs) but at 40mph the pointer was not steady. When I first started this morning the charge light was flickering on at idle speed and when coming to work the dash lights were not steady until approx 60 mph. When I pulled into the car park at work I was able to see the lights in one of the windows and there was clearly an alternate dimming and brightening of the head lights.
I was always given the impression that the alternator should produce a constant output capable of covering all of the general electrics even at idle speed and this, to my laymans eyes, would indicate that there is an output problem. Before I check with the supplier have any of you guys experienced this problem?
Any advice would be appreciated

So what was wrong with the original alternator?
How old is Car/Battery?
Diesels do take a fair old whack of current to start them, more in winter of course, any poor electrical joints need need cleaning/tightening/layer of petroleum jelly on all surfaces.
Have you checked the pos and neg battery leads, particularly the neg one from engine block to chassis and battery?
If you have a voltmeter, you should be looking for approx 13.5 - 14.0 volts at the battery terminals with every electrical item on car switched on, and the engine running at a fast idle. Good luck.

The current issue of French magazine L'Express mentions two useful car acessories, although it only gives "l'Internet" as the source. One is a device that claims to prevent any speed camera or laser device from registering. It costs up to 520 Euros. The other is a spray that is transparent, yet prevents cameras from reading number plates. Their use is, of course, illegal... Read more

These were sold in pubs............turned out to be hair spray with a different label.

Hair spray £2, number plate spray £20. Some dumb nuts bought them................

Hello Folks,

I have bought a supply of oil filters for my Vauxhall Monterey from Milner Offroad in Matlock.

Thye were around £4.00 ea. compared with £11.50+ with my usual pattern ones. I don't even want to think about what OEM ones cost. With oil changes at 4500, this means quite a saving

Milner are a long-established operation, and they say that they can sell at this price as they import themselves and buy in bulk. They say that they have never had problems with them.

The filter looks well-made, with a plastic membrane over the "business end". Yes, I know you have to remove it before fitting. It comes with a set of O-rings as per other pattern filters. Filter case of decent gauge steel.

Has anyone heard of "Boshi Auto Products" or "Bo Tay Filter Mfg Co."? The box looks fine, lettering in english with a box giving application for the "Big Horn" (as the Trooper is marketed in the Far East) and "it seems to work".

What do manufacturers usually skimp on if they save money on filter manufacture? I have heard horror stories of filter "wadding" parting company and going for a voyage around the lubrication system. Or is it a case of "a filter is a filter" these days? Does synthetic oil have a detrimental effect on sub-standard filters?

Any feedback welcome.

Question Insurance
Andy22

Bit of a question really, i'm not familar with insurance claiming after say an accident. What happens when a silly old women goes into the back of me at a round about, do i have to use my insurance and pay my excess to repair the damage or is it totally down to her and her insurance company. Then when applying for insurance premiums do i have to declare that, even though my previous insurance company wasn't involved?

Honest i'm not dodgy, just a young lad wanting to know how it works for the future. Read more

Mark (RLBS)

If you have had three in short succession, then I am surprised. But good luck to you.

However, there is no doubt that some insurers will load for it.

THe Growler

This one ties in all recent threads on parking, drink driving, policing (quality of or otherwise) and adds some unique oriental flavor. Feel free to ignore by all means, but I have to cheer myself up after Ian's announcement -- bleh :-(

Today I need to go into our fair capital city of Manila, renowned for its night-time activities ;-) and the spectacular sunsets on the bay which actually are partially the result of its being the worlds's 4th most polluted metropolis. Lord help them in the upper 3.

Anyway, getting out of my sub-division where I live on to the express way is about 15-20 mins for a 4 km drive. Today it is taking for ever. Stop-start stop start. At one of the stops, I call over a traffic enforcer. What's up boss, I say? Maybe it's a Pepsi or beer delivery artic that's got jammed up somewhere - a common occurrence in the narow streets. Joey's birthday, sir. So? He's having a party up ahead sir.

Joey Marquez is our city mayor, he is a retired basketball player, extremely wealthy, very popular (Growlette melts at the sight of him, I know because she met him at a gas station once) and is currently in the middle of a highly publicised affair with a local movie actress. Thus his appearance tends to bring out the devotees, the anti's, the curious and the inevitable hordes of kibitzers who have nothing else to do.

Finally it becomes clear. The road has ben reduced to one car width. There are TV trucks, Nissan Patrols with no license plates and blacked out windows (Bodyguards) double parked, an Army HumVee (!)at least 30 police Kawasaki motorbikes and Lord knows what else.

Anyway the party has overflowed on to the street and at a group of tables are the riders of the 30 bikes, uniform shirts open, their porker beer bellies straining, gunbelts over the backs of the chairs, all swilling San Miguel beer amid large piles of empties. I should also add that it is 10.30 in the morning.

So much for law enforcement. Tomorrow's papers should have a tasty array of bank robberies, kidnappings and other naughties. Drunken porkers on motorbikes? The mind boggles, even here.

Dunno what Mr Brunstrom would make of this at all.

Question Chuckle Time
Paul Mykatz-Tinks

For those who don't visit the Discussion forum.........

Anyone for a chuckle ?

Take a look at www.eds-motorsport.de/indexenglisch.htm

German site, auto translated into English, somewhat badly.

Example, something about a performance cataclysmic converter...................

"Our EDS-D3 SPORTKAT can be assembled easily at all LET vehicle types so identical whether self-made exhaust fumes plants or cottage croft substitute pipes were used till now."

Open the "Horror Cabinet" and click the pictures.

Good stuff..........dig deep, folks.
