As there were no replies to my previous message regarding the Zafira GSI, I wondered if anyone else either owned one or knew of one or heard of one. As I have just collected mine I would like to know if there is a kindred spirit out there. Apparently only 705 have been registered to date and Vauxhall anticipate around this number to be made yearly. BTW I think it's quite nice ! Read more

Question Paging PhilW
Adam Going (Tune-Up)

Phil,

Any news on the Clio cold starting problem ?

Adam Read more

PhilW

Adam,
Thanks for enquiring - unfortunately no further news because my son lives miles away from me and has put up with the problem for last couple of weeks. However, Clio is still not starting well despite my treatment with WD40 on the stepper motor! he is going away next week and leaving his car with me so I am going to follow your suggestion with regard to the CTS and will let you know if that solves the prob.
best wishes

I was browsing ebay this lunchtime, and came across an amusing little story....

Someone, 20 years ago, won some money and decided to buy (but not register) a car to keep as an investment. It cost him roughly £4800.

He kept it locked away safely, and now, 20 years later is trying to cash in his profits. It's like new with only 18 miles on the clock.

The only downside was the choice of car......
It was a top of the range Austin Metro, 1.3HLE (white, with orange interior).

The auction runs for another couple of days, and the bidding has reached £1500. I think he'd have been better putting the money under the matress.

Having said that, I can't think of a single car in this price range that would have appreciated over the last 20 years, so I guess you can't win.

Motorists Guide to New and Used Car Prices which was a monthly then, don't know if it is still around. I still use the couple of editions I have from the 70s and 80s to check out the spec on the occasional banger oddities that come up locally. Last one looked up was an N-reg Opel Kadett so where do you get info on old model variations if you throw everything away? That's my story for my wife and I'm sticking to it.

...and if we all move to LPG, the price (because of tax) will shoot up - fuel tax is nothing to do with pollution, it's a useful reason though, but the govt. would soon think of a new one.

Ian (Cape Town)

From our local paper: This happened opposite my office last night....
Commuters were horrified when a Tanzanian man was gunned down in the centre of Cape Town as people made their way home after work on Tuesday.
Police arrested a taxi driver from Democratic Republic of Congo in connection with the shooting of Mwene Lynda, 28, in Adderley Street near Cape Town station.
Captain Jacques Wiese said they also confiscated a pistol belonging to the driver and found four spent cartridges on the ground.
"They were always shouting at each other but their fight got to boiling point," said one commuter.
"We heard shots and minutes later a man was lying on his back with the blood pouring out."
Metro paramedics certified Lynda dead at the scene. He had a bullet wound in his head.

One of my co-workers was about 50 feet away when it happened. What wasn't reported was the angry mob jumping up and down on the Taxi (an old mercedes), kicking in the windows and throwing burning rubbish into it.
Was burning away quite nicely until the Fire Brigade arrived... I didn't realise they went up that quickly! Read more

Did you manage to get any bits off the Merc before it went up?

The latest craze in the UK is to dump and burn out your old banger when it becomes uneconomically viable to run, rather than pay a scrap yard 50 quid to dispose of it.

I have an old Vauxhall Nova and rely on scrapyards to keep it going so if people continue to burn their cars out I will have to go to a main dealer for parts........aaagggggghhhhhhh..!!!

Question Ford Scorpio
Slender

Should I buy one?

Are they as unreliable as even this site suggests?

In my quest to find maximum front leg room and comfort the one I experienced recently would almost put my fathers Lexus LS 400 to shame, though, granted, without the quality and inherent reliabilty! Views of real owners most appreciated. Read more

You want legroom? Vauxhall Carlton/Senator has it by the bucket load. I am 6'6" and I didn't even need the seat all the way back.

Question Top tip
Richard Hall

A visitor to my website just e-mailed me this. I'm really tempted to try it with the Polo when I get home, just to see if it works.

"One time I broke down with a broken fan belt in the Spitfire, in Banbury, on my way back to Solihull, at midnight on a winter's Sunday night. It was a flat bit of road (so I couldn't push start it myself), nobody else around and the engine wouldn't turn over because the battery, which probably was not in its prime of life, had been flattened. I fitted another belt I had floating around in the back, jacked up a rear wheel, put the car in gear and placed my toolbox on the accelerator (as you need to give it a half throttle to start it when it is hot). I then wound an old length of seatbelt-type webbing I had as a tow strap round the circumference of the tyre and pulled it like a lawnmower, being VERY careful not to pull the whole car off the jack. (Images of the thing driving down the road without me - heavy toolbox keeping the throttle open nicely.) After a few over-cautious attempts, the engine started and within half an hour of breaking down I was on the road again with a huge grin of relief and self-satisfaction."

Question 406 damp start
Andy22

still problems with my 406.

it start very roughly in wet conditions as i understand 406's do, and i read somewhere that water can affect the engine management.

I have a can of damp start going spare, can i spray it over the engine management unit?

(Bear in mind until it drys it is liquid based) Read more

Adam Going (Tune-Up)

You are unlikely to hurt the ECU with WD40, being a light oil water dispersant, but I would not use any sort of silicone sealant spray as this may trap water inside. The wiring connection "comb" that fits to the ECU can be treated with Vaseline to keep the individula pins clean and free from corrosion. Common problem on these is HT tracking inside the sealed-unit coil pack assembly. Very difficult to test for or proove, other than by substitution, which is expensive !!

I have a 2 year old Mercedes A140.

Main dealer has always used a fully synthetic oil (Esso Ultron). New dealer offers a choice of Mobil Super S (Semi) or Mobil 1 (fully)

IIUI Mobil Super S (semi) is the MB recommended oil, but Mobil 1 is also approved for use.

As the car has always used fully synthetic - am I right it thinking that the best choice would be to go with mobil 1?

Pete,

If the dealer has used fully synthetic from the start then I would be inclined to go for the Mobil 1 option.

Hello all,
Will be buying 2nd-hand car soon. Am concerned about buying a "clocked" car. Is it reasonable to ask the dealer/vendor to see the logbook/V5, in order to telephone the previous owner, and verify the mileage, or am I asking for a punch on the nose?
All views gratefully revieved

Back to the original question.

I have in the past asked to have the details of the previous owner in order to contact them.I must add, this has been when I've bought a car from a dealer.I haven't yet encountered a problem with this.In fact,I bought my missus a Nissan Micra 13SR just about 6 weeks ago,and did just that. And also when I bought my 2.0DLI Vectra in February from a different dealer.I am pleased to say, they were both helpful.

I also have done the reverse after I've sold a car.If anyone has rung me about it,I always tell them what I know. After all,I've nothing to lose.

However,I haven't bought a car private for a long time, but I guess if they are very cagey about your intentions, then tell them to put it where the sun don't shine, even if it is the car you've been after.

Remember.There's always another car elsewhere.
