Hi
My car passed its MOT after a new front droplink was fitted. What is this and what does it do?
thanks Read more
Hi
I have ongoing clutch problems with my car - K reg 1.4 ZX Avantage - had clutch replaced just over a year ago as oil leak caused it to slip. A year on a new noise has appeared when releasing the clutch, I engage gears OK but when I release clutch a sort of clunking noise is heard, plus starting to not like pulling away on hills again. I don't treat the clutch badly, riding it etc. so at a loss to know why it's playing up yet again!! Any ideas?
I have had quite a few problems with this car but have to say it has not totally let me down...yet, all seem to be fairly well-known problems - flat acceleration points (oh boy is this true!); worn driveshafts; oil leaks. It has only done 62K but feels like more, but I am 3rd owner so have inherited everyone else's problems no doubt!
Thinking of chopping it in for Mazda 323f as I love these (thanks to those who already replied on that one!) or Nissan Primera, or Audi 80 - whatever I will not be buying another Citroen. Limited budget so what do you reckon - keep the ZX going or go for German/Japanese?

My Nissan Almera was the best car I've owned (1995-2000 model). Not the prettiest but vast & comfy inside, 25-38 mpg on the 1.6 round London with an auto box and a heavy right foot, never once let me down despite constant cold starts & short runs, major service = 100 quid with the main dealer's "budget fit" scheme. In addition they can now be bought for buttons, and there's loads of old folks'/ ex motability ones with 20k- on the clock. They also get great 2nd hand write-ups on Parkers site.
Eric (better do some work now rather than fretting about my mercedes with bird poo problems)
My 110bhp TDi Sharan has a service code come up on the trip meter. Where can I find a list of items to check please?
I've done a search on Google but can't find anything. TIA. Read more
Come on Graham, you bumped this back up to the top because nobody replied. Please answer my question and supply a little more information. You will then be more likely to get a useful answer.
Is some sort of code displayed, a word or two...?
Andy
Interested to see what mileages have been achieved on the same engine/gearbox for different motors.
My previous 1994 L-reg cavalier 2.0 8V LSi was sold with 158,000 on the clock, original clutch although did have head gasket renewed. The present Omega Auto has reached 92,000 (2.0 16V) without any problems so far (touch wood!).

Just thought, try searching for bores, rather than mileage. Here's one of them!
Sorry guys - more Omega stuff! Since I've had my 2000 (old model)2.5 CDX Estate there has been an annoying rattle in the back. It sounds as though it could be the spare wheel, but I've removed that and other stuff like the jack, load area cover, mother in law etc, but the rattle's still there. The boot door seems to close tightly so it's not that. Anyone else experienced this? Could it be exhaust, suspension .....? Read more
Are all these posts related to Estate cars? Mine is a '98 saloon and does the same thing! I've tied the spare wheel down really tight and had the rear subframe mountings changed - no difference. My local garage had it up on a ramp and the mechanic & I had a good poke about underneath - nothing obvious. He said he'd seen a loose fuel tank do this - but mine was sound!
Its mainly rough road surfaces at slower speeds that makes mine do it, 20/30 max - above that it seems better/ok.
Grrrr

I have a 93 Audi 80 2.0 E which has just failed its MOT on the emissions test. The fast Idle results were as follows: Fast Idle CO vol % should be between 0.00 and 0.30 actual reading was 9.98, Fast Idle HC vol ppm should be between 0 and 200 actual reading was 706, Lambda should be 1.030 and 0.970 actual reading was 0.712. The car is fine starting from cold and will run ok for as long as I want it to but if I stop the engine and go back to it in say half an hour it runs like a pig coughing and spluttering and it takes all my time to just keep it running. This lasts for about 5mins and then it seems to right itself. I have taken it to a Bosch specialist who plugged it into the computer for a couple of hours and said it might be an internal fuel leak he also said that the ECU would let him go so far in to its programme and then kick him out. Anyone out there with any suggestions I would be very grateful Read more
As you say John difficult to diagnose without seeing it. Could be failed Lambda sensor, dribbling injector(s). Trouble is you could throw a lot of money at this without solving the problem without the correct equipment and troubleshooting routines. Look in Yellow pages under car engine tuning and conversion for our nearest operator.
Does anyone know if the "bee sting" roof car aerials on Vauxhalls are of the same spec across the range of different models? Not getting a good reception from the Vectra's radio and was wondering if the Astra's "bee sting" is the same part as I have had the offer of one? Read more
Radios used to have adjustable impedance matching screw to suit different aerials. Usually at the back.
I have an Astra Turbo Diesel 95, when the car is cold i don't get any heat from my heaters until the water temperature reaches 100 and then hot air comes out straight away. the water temperature then goes back to normal temperature (90) straight away and i have heat as normal. i had froth in my expansion tank, but this seems to have stopped since i replaced the cap. I have replaced the thermostat and there are no coolant leaks. somebody suggested it might be a blockage to the heater matrix, does anybody have any ideas?
I'm grateful for any ideas. Read more
Whilst still only guessing at an airlock, the knack is in opening the various bleed valves on the hoses etc. to expell all the air whilst refilling it.
Simply draining, flushing the system and refilling it can still leave an airlock.
Some rant on Watchdog tonight implying that 1 in 4 Pug 406s in UK could have their boots opened with bare hands and the kanck of what to do. Anybody got further info on this please? French have been told but UK is being kept in the dark ie dealers and factory deny all knowledge of a problem. Read more
This is just the latest example (as if we needed another !) of how the British motorist is being regularly and cynically shafted by the car manufacturers. I think this is a very serious issue and it's up to us to publicise it as much as possible and stop buying their bl**dy cars !!! Is HJ planing to raise this scandal in the Telegraph ? I think it should be.
We could all try getting the subject raised on the various radio/TV motoring shows. I'm sure Mike Rutherford on Talk Sport (Friday lunchtime) might be interested to follow this up too - he seems to have good contacts in the trade..
On another thread Bogush was talking about the daft fact that loads of Cambs Village 40 limits were dropping to blanket 30 limits.
Our village was a prime example of this policy but at least they had a little sense.
The core part of the village was dropped to 30mph from 40mph close to the school, shop and main "on-street" housing. They did extend the 40 coverage at one end of the village, I was never in favour of this because I think it builds up frustration for commuters and gets the core area a greater chance of limit avoidance.
Also they put in some interactive "slow down" signs just after entering the 30 limit each end, having seen these operating for some months they have mixed success.
What I wanted but we didn't get was a couple of cobbled areas which would have become natural crossing points for pedestrians. They seemed to think they would be as unpopular as speed bumps...not so. Anyway there is at least one LA not going the whole way down the party line with all the most hated measures.
Traffic behaviour is now about as good as it will get. I honestly think you are going to have to put up with some sort of traffic calming (soft or hard)if you reject the idea of much reduced village limits.
Of course now we have to contend with the building of almost 100 new houses near the school...completely out of scale with the existing very small village developments. These are themselves likely to produce traffic movement issues greater than the small speed reduction they have achieved with the previous work.....and none of these new houses have sufficient car parking.....ho hum!
But planning decisions are another issue again.........!

James and Brian - yes it is quite incredible that they rely on computers rather than the local knowledge of people who live on/near these roads and could give very valuable and much more reliable input. Having said that, the public often tend to whinge after the event when they haven't bothered to get involved in the first place. As regards budgets etc. they do of course need to spend their budget or they lose the money next year. This accounts for the vast amount of works which tend to be commenced just before the end of the finanical year. Finally, if those of you who are employed by companies were to make as many costly errors and misjudgements as some of these people you would lose your jobs ! The worst that happens at local authority level is that you get promoted a bit slower ! There is an argument which says that these people justify their own existence by constantly implementing, redesigning and often removing these schemes i.e. now we've cocked it all up we need more money to put it right ! It's very easy to absolve yourself of any blame for what has been done by relyng on a computer model and blaming it when things go pear shaped !
Oohh I am cynical aren't I.

Perhaps you ought to give us a clue as to what make/model your car is, but I would think that the drop link connects the anti roll bar to the wishbone. It transfers up and down movement of one wishbone into a torsion (anti roll) bar to help the car stay flatter in corners. It's not uncommon for the joint on the drop link to wear and rattle.
