Looking through some adverts in the local rag, I see a 2nd hand car advertised by a dealer with the phrase *superb*, does this mean faultless? Does the advert form part of the purchase contract ie, should the car do what the advert says it should do?
Can a dealer sell a vehicle to the public on a *sold as seen* basis with no comebacks whatsoever?
What is the current position with mileage disclaimers? Read more
This is a spoof I made up for another website and if all dealers were honest all adverts would read like this I wanted to post this on here yesterday but didn't want to make a thread for it as its a bit 'silly'.
Rover 25 114, FSH, 170,000 miles, 2001 reg, just had its anual head gasket change. Only overheats in traffic and otherwise perfect, 12 months MOT for piece of mind, £1750 no offers.
Audi A4 2.0 1994 , 300,000 miles, some history, looks new, has strange fault where the car keeps driving to close to the car in front, hence £500.
Ford Ka 1997 1.3, new plate fitted on floor so will last for ever, only burns 1 litre of oil every 100 miles, tappets very tight so no noise from engine, always passed the MOT with STP stop smoke, four new Kwikfit value tyres (fitted in 2005), 2 months MOT, only 95k, oil changed recently at 70k. £900 no offers.
Renault Clio 1.2 Dyanmaique 2004, lovely car everything works apart from the electric windows, central locking, automatic wipers, automatic headlights, reverse gear and the radio. Perfect first car, engine knocks since cambelt snapped hence £1500.
Lada Riva 1500SLX 1987 - Very very rare, top of the range, has headlamp wipers, 5 speed heater and head rests. Very very rare, no MOT, not been driven since 1995 bargain at £3995 only 14,000 miles so just like new including the authentic wing rust which finishes of that showroom condition.
Nissan Almera 1.4 1998, in stunning white and spots of orange, one owner from new but log book shows 10 this is just a clerical error, only 130,000 miles pensioner owned so used daily to go to the local health clinic 600 yards away. Not MOT but its japeneese will pass no problem. Lovely smart reliable car. Only £600 or £2000 with fresh MOT.
I know the law says that children under 14 are the responsibility of the driver, but, how many kids do you see unrestrained in the back or front of the car? And when you see unrestrained kids, isn't the parent normally wearing a seat belt in the drivers seat?
I counted about 5 or 6 in a nine mile journey home from work today.
Surely the law should be doing something to stop this dangerous action which will cause loss of life in the event of an accident.
But they can't do it with a camera while sat on their back sides, or is that being cynical?

does a nissan serena people carrier have seat belts in the back ?
only ask because i've seen one quite often recently with three or four free-range kids bouncing around in it
ps - is a nissan serena diesel still the slowest accelerating vehicle being sold, as TG magazine once claimed
pps - the one I see is usually driven slowly - where there are 2 lanes, guess which one it is usually in ?

My wife (age 26) is keen to learn to drive. I passed my test years ago and have no idea what the current form is for such things as: obtaining her provisional licence, arranging/taking the theory/practical tests and the timing/sequence thereof. Can anyone advise please ? I'd like to buy her a Fiesta hatchback or similar (budget c. £1000) but she will be insuring it. Any suggestions/recommendations re. choice of car or where to get good (reasonably priced - if that's possible anymore !) insurance gratefully received. Read more
Spot on, LeZebre. The more progress a learner makes, the worse they think they are doing. The bad ones are never aware of all the mistakes they are making and keep pushing to be put in for their test.
Can anybody help please?.
I had a new head gasket fitted to the above car in Jan 1999.
After 12000 miles the repair has failed and has to be done again.
I have discovered that the head was not skimmed during the initial repair and I thought that an alluminium head should always be machined before being refitted, otherwise premature failiure can result.Am I right please. Regards Cabman

I know D W is the man to explain this . The topping up of water and bleeding of air from this system is a bit more involved than most cars and if it is not done correctly could cause the problems that you have been unlucky enough to suffer. I believe the top of the radiator is lower than the top of the engine which is why the system should be filled via a home made header tank. I am not an expert DW is.
I know you have covered this topic a few times, but I am a little confused over a few issues and wondered if anyone could shed some light.
I have just received a Notice Of Intented Prosecution, dated the 11/09/02, for a speeding incident on the 15/07/02 (2 months ago), presumably by a camera. Until now I had not heard anything about this. Now I know they have to send you the NIP within 14 days, but I understand there are exceptions to that rule if you are not the registered keeper. I bought the vehicle at the end of June, so I had sent off the V5 and all but I guess it hadn't been processed. Speaking to the camera unit call centre they say as long as the origional NIP was sent out to the registered keeper within 14 days of the offence then it's valid. Well my V5 says at that date I was the registered keeper, (though to be fair I have only just recieved the backdated V5 in the post). So the police claim they have spent two months trying to trace the driver of the vehicle, surely there must be a time limit on this thing. And obviously, I have absolutly no memory of the day or the event, and have no idea who was driving, it could have been me, my girlfriend, my parents, anyone. Any advice on what action I should take would be much appreciated.

Robert: What method do they use to distinguish between truthful people and liars???
DVD: Not sure I really speak as an intelligent man. ;-) Your point backs up mine. You couldn't employ this system and make it workable *unless* you assumed everyone could remember. Therefore if a car that, say, 4 people have access to gets camera'd and they don't know who was behind the wheel at any one moment they have to agree between them who takes the hit otherwise the points go to the registered keeper. Compare this with a recent case where a couple killed a baby. Because it couldn't be determined which one struck the fatal blow neither were charged with murder. (Although both did see the inside of a cell)
I understand why it's essential to be able to force a car driver to state who is the driver of a car at the time of an offence.
However this seems to be used by the Camera people a *lot* yet when a friend's sister was hit by a hit and run driver the registered owner simply said he wasn't driving and was *let off*!
Strict speed enforcement is OK, as long as motoring offences involving danger and non-motoring offences are taken as seriously.

Why do I feel a sense of deja vu?
Article from Fleet News:
"Lung cancer fear over diesel fumes
ONE of the largest studies carried out into the health effects of diesel exhaust emissions has warned that long-term exposure could cause lung cancer.
The findings of the Health Assessment Document for Diesel Engine Exhaust, released last week by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, were revealed as latest figures showed UK fleet diesel sales had risen by 47.2% so far this year.
Its authors stress their research is based on mid-1990's diesels, but warn they are not certain whether engine and fuel improvements in recent years will have done enough to eliminate the risks they have uncovered.
A spokesman said: 'The health hazard conclusions are applicable to engines currently in use, which include many older engines.
'As new diesel engines with cleaner exhaust emissions replace existing engines, the applicability of the conclusions will need to be re-evaluated.'
The report gives a damning assessment of the dangers to health of diesel emissions from some engines. It concludes: 'Long-term exposure to diesel engine exhaust emissions is likely to pose a lung cancer hazard as well as damage the lungs in other ways depending on exposure.
'On the basis of extensive animal testing evidence, diesel engine emissions are judged to pose a chronic respiratory hazard to humans'.
Short-term effects are also apparent, the report claimed, saying: 'The most readily identified non-cancer health effect on humans is its ability to elicit subjective complaints of eye, throat and bronchial irritation and symptoms such as headache, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting and numbness and tingling of the extremities.
'Evidence also shows that it can induce allergic responses, some of which are also typical of asthma and/or exacerbate existing respiratory allergies.'
The 'weight of evidence' conclusions on the health risks of diesel exhaust emissions are the second major health scare for the fuel in just over three months, but are the first to be so direct about the potential health effects."
All change for the emissions based car tax then?

The 3% loading was a mealy-mouthed attempt by the Chancellor to ensure his budget was "revenue neutral".
This means robbing Peter Diesel to pay Paul Petrol.
If too many people switch to diesel, the Treasury earns (say) 30%less in duty & VAT, based on the typical difference in fuel consumption.
A Damsel in distress in Sutton[1] has just called me.
He brake warning light has come on. I'm assuming the Clio has no pad wear indicators and that this is either a dodgy switch or fluid.
I'll be hot footing it over there tonight to assist.
Can anyone confirm a) That a fluid top up is a good starting point. b) That the fluid bottle will be above the master cylinder over the middle pedal on a clio. c) Any other helpful info?

Nipped over there last night. Checked the manual which confirmed that the light indicates only fluid level and handbrake status.
The fluid was very low but there was enough left to suggest that the fluid isn't leaking and it's just pad wear leaving space for more fluid.
Topped it up with DOT 4 spilling plenty. Wiped as best I could and used a 2 litre bottle of mineral water to wash what I could off.

I have pugeot 306 the problem is that the central locking keeps on going up and down really fast. sum people have said it could be relay were would it be on peugoet 306? Read more
had similar problem with my 306 which also unlocked itself now and again ,finally traked down to passenger door actuator not fully locking. found problem by smacking door sharply with hand around door handle area when car was locked.
chris>> All the comments are valid but my experience with these so
far is that is most likely to be a stiff lock
or one that doesn't close 100% to the "satisfaction" of the
locking electrics.
Just going round all the dooors and slamming them can stop
it for a while.
That's why L'escargot's WD40 works.
Same thing can happen if a coat/seat belt gets trapped in
the door.
If still u/s then the next port of call does have
to be the electrical bits.

Until recently I drove trucks for a living and had filled up at BP garages three or four times a week, saving the BP Premier Points. When I managed to get a balance of the card it only showed £7.50 on it, which did not match the amount of fuel bought/cash spent/points saved.
I complained to Premier Points, who informed me that VERY often, you pays for yer fuel by BP Card and hands over yer PP card. Thing is, the cashier's usually putting your card into the machine when you're signing your receipt. Ergo, your points never actually go on your card, they go on his own one when you're heading out the door.
Apparently this is happening in epidemic proportions. Ensure it doesn't happen to you if you're collecting points.
