Clio Brake Fluid - Toad, of Toad Hall.
A Damsel in distress in Sutton[1] has just called me.

He brake warning light has come on. I'm assuming the Clio has no pad wear indicators and that this is either a dodgy switch or fluid.

I'll be hot footing it over there tonight to assist.

Can anyone confirm a) That a fluid top up is a good starting point. b) That the fluid bottle will be above the master cylinder over the middle pedal on a clio. c) Any other helpful info?

Toad,

In again tonight then..

a) Best starting point is the vehicle handbook open while looking under the bonnet. Check what warning lamp is for!

b) See a.

c) See a.

d) Has she left the handbrake on (I refer you to your own previous comments on female drivers).

Peep, peep.

I made her read it to me. She claims it says either fluid or hand brake. I shall double check her reading.

Yes Dave. You obvously speak from bitter experience. I shall double check all previously offered information.

One thing that bothers me is that if the fluid is low it must have gone somewhere. She must either have worn most of the pads down leaving lots of *space* in the cylinders or have leak. I haven't got time right now for replacing pads and am not prepared to do anything more technical.

Thursday is 'packing for weekend' night. I could do without this.

Yes well brake fluid will gradually go down over time as you say with lining wear.

There has to be a point where the light wasn't on yesterday but is today.

Could be as simple as 100ml dot4 reqd and job done.

Well oh yes there is the education bit about checking the fluid level weekly rather than two yearly.

Good luck!

- She can have the 2 year old bottle in my garage. Will have absorbed far too much water to use in the bike! ;-)

- Risky strategy. I'd rather top up fluid at inconvinient times than devise a way of removing 10W40 from brake fluid resovoirs and screenwash from the ash tray...

However I will show her oil water and brake fluid and tell her to top them up.

I never thought I'd say this but I hope she doesn't want me to hang about all night...

Just spoken to her. She's adamant that although the car *is* fitted with wear indicators the pad wear light is a different colour.

Why do I get this feeling she's just left an indicator on??? ;-)

When there's a Clio damsel in distress I guess it would be one giant leap for Toadkind.

Resolution - Toad, of Toad Hall.
Nipped over there last night. Checked the manual which confirmed that the light indicates only fluid level and handbrake status.

The fluid was very low but there was enough left to suggest that the fluid isn't leaking and it's just pad wear leaving space for more fluid.

Topped it up with DOT 4 spilling plenty. Wiped as best I could and used a 2 litre bottle of mineral water to wash what I could off.
