June 2002
I have a 2001 Volvo V70 2.4 SE (170bhp) Auto, which I purchased from a main dealer in Feb this year. It had 11,000 miles on the clock and prior to me taking delivery it had been through the Volvo used car check which appears to be pretty comprehensive.
The car had belonged to a Volvo dealer as a demonstrator and had been serviced in late August 2001 having covered 8,000 miles.
I have no issues with the car at all, it is superb and appears to have been well looked after.
My question is this, the car has a service light on the dashboard, this I assume illuminates when the car is due to be serviced. How does this light detect when a service is due?

Can anyone help with this please? Car starts OK when cold, after 30 seconds runs rough and stalls. Restarts fine then runs OK. VW Dealer diagnosed a faulty road speed sensor and repaired this which improved it but not totally. The diagnostic equipment shows no faults. Any ideas? It has the Bosch single point injection system. Its a 1993 Auto 1.8 CL Read more
I also have a 94 1.8 cl auto and have the same problems, After a lot of messing about I disconnected the lambda sensor just below and to the left of the carb/injection as looking in from the engine from the wiring loom. A 4 pin connector , car runs virtually perfectly now no stalling cutting out etc . On my 1.8 AAm engine the sensor is right below the SPi fuel injection in the exhaust manifold itself so trace the wire to the left and its easy to dusconnect. Ran it for 2 days still perfect with no down side but I realy need to replace it. this unit monitors the oxygen ent the exhaust and adjusts the mixture accordingly . PS I have tried to remove the sensor and cannot gat it out so may need a garage to ' free 'it . But I am sute this is is my problem and possibly yours, repl ones are about £ 95 plus vat from VAG dealer or about 45 to 50 else where
My '92 518's rear offside door no longer "centrally locks"; the solenoid doesn't click. I've taken the door panel off (!) and everthing looks intact. Can anyone tell me if there is a relay for the central locking and if so where I can find it? Read more
The most likely problem with this is a knackered motor in that door. The best way to test this is to use a 12v test light or multimeter and check that you are getting power to the motor when you activate the central locking. If there is power there then it is almost certainly the motor thats had it.
2.0 bora sport - had to stop on the way home last night and became aware the engine was running very unevenly
same problem this morning, it's also noticable the engine is down on power and very hesitant under acceleration
the two local dealers i've called say it needs plugging in to the diagnostics and neither of them can do that until the middle of next week, and i'm not happy about running round in a car i dont feel confident about
any helpful ideas ?

(p.s. - what happened to the days when a bloke came out, looked at your car, listened to it, blipped the throttle and instantly knew the cause of your problem - can't get past the service receptionist these days)

The dealer diagnosed a faulty no 2 ht lead, which they replaced under warranty. That sorted the problem for a few weeks, and I asked them to look at the problem again (still under warranty) which they omitted to do, and now of course the warranty has expired, so i've ordered leads 1,3 and 4, and a new set of plugs (for luck).
Seeing that i can't find a way to get the leads off 2&3 plugs or get the plugs out without removing the inlet manifold which goes over the top of them, on friday its off the the only garage in my neck of the woods thats in HJ's good garage list. lets hope they are !

Does anyone have any good or bad exeriences or tips for using motorail to Nice? Read more
One thing about the journey down is that you can always stop at one of these cheap hotels on the way. I try to use Villages Hotel - its about 29Euros per family room for the night and the rooms have always been clean and spacious. Booking online is the cheapest option, but as you may not know how far you'll be going in one day's travel its hard to know where to stop!!
They're all the way down the motorways so easy to find :-)
Was looking at a neighbours 3 Yr old Sharan last night, they were complaining that the A/C would not work, turns out blowers are not working as the 25A fuse had blowen, when this was replaced and fan started working again the air conditioning still would not work, the A/C fuses are ok but still dead as a very dead thing, when you start the car there is no compressor noise.... I am thinking that the A/C system has been leaking gas for some time and that the system is now empty, as they have said that it was never much good, .... if the system has run out of gas will the compressor be damaged and display the symptoms above, or is it smart enough that if there is no gas it just will not power up? My dad's old Galaxy V6 lost coolong effect after 5 years (just before replcing with new Galaxy), he got a friend who does Fridge gases to recharge it, but as the car systems have a different valve (probably make you pay rip-off dealer prices) he just brazed a new valve in to the system....all was ok then...

A new job as a business consultant is pending and my very tired 148,000 mile 1.8 Ford Mondeo needs to be replaced. I have a very loose budget (up to £15k, lower the better) to spend on a new or second hand car and fuel expenses will be claimed back from the boss.
The devil on my shoulder is telling me to go mad for once in my life and get the hot rod I never had in my twenties (I'm 33). However the better side of my nature is telling me to buy something cheap (used Vectra), reliable (Honda), image enhancing (BMW, Merc) and diesel.
Nothing boring but make sure it does'nt shout 'drug dealer' or 'ram raider'. Also nothing that has been passed through half a dozen previous hands before depreciation brings it into budget (less than 40k miles).
Thought about 2 litre Focus, 2.5 V6 Mondeo in a nice paint job but I'll open it to the floor........any ideas?
Thanks,
Mark

Camry also built in Australia....rhd as well, uk model is probably sourced from there. The Oz model is a very bland
boring large saloon/estate. You have to pay a lot extra to include the quality of fittings you might expect....not sure if the Toyota Vienta range is sold here...its the upper end of the Camry range.
The 4-cylinder Camry is hideously under powered...almost none sold in Oz, V6 is the way to go.

A colleague has just told me there are companies just the other side of the channel who will deliver a bowser of diesel at French prices (currently about 30p a litre less than UK prices) to your home. The only condition is you have to go to France to order and pay for it and there's obviously a rental charge for the bowser.
Any of you helpful backroomers know anything about this? Sounds too good to be true, but if it is, count me in :o)

Red Wine is very reasonable from the state run Off Licence,
similar to UK prices; so get tanked in the hotel room before you go out for the evening!
Oh, don't even think of driving (motoring link) as their Drink/Driving laws are very strict???
Does anyone have any experience of PowerBox with VAG diesels please ? I am considering adding this to my Galaxy TDi ( 90 ) 1997 ( R ). My wife mostly uses it to travel to work, it's the weekend family car and we tow a 'van.
Many thanks. Read more
What makes you say it is more reliable?
Thats a phenomenal increase. Does it really not affect reliability?

The impression I get is that the systems have a maximum time and/or mileage limit and when these are reached the service lights are triggered. However, to cover for 'extreme' use, within that overall limit, I believe there are other parameters monitored (eg cold starts, engine speed etc), and if these exceed certain limits, then they trigger an earlier illumination.
For example, I'm convinced my BMW loses a green light exactly every 2000 miles, but it allegedly records many other operating values than mileage. It gets mainly long runs, so I would expect the maximum service intervals. It certainly doesn't have a time limit between service intervals.
I believe current BMWs use only total fuel use as an analogue of type of service so do have flexible service intervals.
