My neighbours 3 door pajero (ex jap)
This morning he noticed a large amount of play in the hatchback door bottom hinge.
Down to the dealer who tells him that he can't supply an hinge pin but has to have a complete hinge. Cost £90.00+vat.
Also a respray of that area at another £60.
Anyone any experience or advice.

I wont tell you what Pajero is Spic slang for,but it seems appropriate.
Its the man with lovely 405 I've come to see.
Mine just screw out upwards using the appropriate torx socket, you may need to plus gas them first, the thread is in the top arm of the hinge,by the way.
Sadly the actual metal hinge thing wears too,and i havent investigated that, but it looks bodgeable. You might even be able to bore and sleeve it,but the door would have to come off and they are surprisinly heavy and awkward.

The future president of his enlarged European Union, from Finisterre, sorry Fitz Roy to Vladivostock, his supremeness, and our beloved New Labour Fuhrer, his Toniness is due to follow in President Putin's wake to Geedubya's little ol' ranch for talks on the terrorism war.
"Mr Blair (Times 8/3/02 page2 col.3) agreed with his colleagues( the cabinet ministers!!?) that if military action were (sic) to be taken( against Iraq) the case for it would have to be 'painstakingly made', accordingly to senior cabinet sources.
This will no doubt involve the Prime Minister submitting himself to Georgedubya inserting his arm up Blair's rear orifice to ensure that our leader is reprogrammed to carry the message around the world that what 'daddy Bush failed to do then Geedubya is gonna do'.
What is missing from all this pathetic posturing by both leaders is any mention of the effect that any renewal of military action in the middle east might have on world fuel prices.
I imagine that the opportunity to raise fuel prices on the hypothesis that action in the middle east is even being talked about has not escaped the attention of the major oil companies.
Nor would it have escaped our Chancellor of the Exchequer that such action could provide a cast iron excuse to raise the level of fuel duties.
And so we will be called upon as patriotic guardians of democracy to bail Bush out by going along with his election strategy, and to support our dimwitted Bush Sycophant in his desperate attempt to become a world leader.
Any comments or guesses on just how high the price of a litre will have to rise to satisfy these two dysfunctional, egocentric pomposities?? Read more

The speedo on my Pug 305 has broken, and I'm having difficulty finding a secondhand unit. In the meantime I'm judging my speed using the rev. counter. (approx. 20MPH per 1000 revs in 5th, I think..) can anyone tell me the correct MPH per 1000 Revs. in 4th. and 5th. gear? I can then mark the counter face and stay within the speed limits!
Any help gratefully received.

James,
Thanks for the info, I think I can stay legal using that conversion of revs. to MPH.

I've just finished fitting some genuine fog lights to the front of my Landrover Discovery. The kit came with lights, replacement bumper pannels, switch and relay. The accessory brochure said wiring already in vehicle. The instructions were simple, bolt in lights behind bumper, plug into wiring plug nearby, replace blanking pannel with new pannel, replace switch 'blank' with switch and plug in wiring from behind the blank, fit relay into fusebox in the place marked front fog.
All went well until it came time to try them. No Joy. I checked the bulbs which were OK, I used the rear fog light switch to illiminate that, still no joy, I swapped the relay with the air con relay which are identicle, still no joy.
I decided to ask my "friendly" local main dealer as to whether i could have faulty wiring in my vehicle and should I be booking it in under warranty. The only help they seemed to want to give me was "are you sure there are bulbs in".
I then phoned the Dealer in the Lake District that I bought my car from who informed me that they also had the same trouble and found that the ECU had to be told to activate the wiring even though there is no mention anywhere in Land Rovers information. They would do it for me free but with it being a 160 mile round trip suggested trying a nearer dealer to avoid the fuel costs.
I then rang a different dealer to the first one i tried to ask how much it would cost. The reply about an hours work, £56 plus VAT.
My point - why include wiring when it's obviously no DIY job and why not put something in the instructions.
Looks like the way of the future, making things too complex to ensure work for the dealers. God help me when a headlight bulb goes and I nead to go to the garage to reset the system. Read more

Even if it did take an hour. £56+VAT, I'm in the wrong business. Mind you I'm sure the mechanic that presses the 'Activate' button won't see much of it.

Has anyone tried overhauling a brake servo from the 70/80s?

I know for more modern cars you get a new/exchange one but I've come across a site that does kits for servos on modern classics.

My Land Rover braking system was updated some years ago with a Series III set-up, including a servo like you might find in the last of the Series IIIs.

Thing is the servo hardly reduces the effort at all, there is a briliant vacuum available up to the servo so it must be the unit. I've never had one apart but guess they are just simple valves, seals and rubbers??

Although it is 10 years or more since I bought an OEM servo repair kit (for a Lotus Plus 2). I had assumed they were readily available off the shelf for not a lot of money for something with the huge classic spares back up of a Land-Rover. As I recall, it is pretty straightforward putting the servo back together. Besides Alwyn's caution, I would advise not losing any of the screws if you are keen on originality and having them all match.

Hi all

I need to get hold of a good VW parts dealer, something that comes with a gurantee, that has been reconditioned as opposed to ripped off a knacked old dog. Main dealer are just silly prices (such as £85 for a resistor!!!!).

any ideas much appreciated

thanks! Read more

German and Swedish - but make sure u r not buying some dodgy pattern part. Their ads usuallu say whether genuine or pattern. The blokes there also run VW's themselves and will not rip u off.

If ur after recon parts - try www.vw-audi-specialists.co.uk

Are there any *good* websites which allow the motortrade to advertise thier trade-ins to other motortraders ?
Emotorhouse seems to have stopped updating and has a very poor search facility.
I have recently started to trade part-time again but find it difficult getting to auctions so sourcing vehicles via the net is a nice solution. Read more

Yes, niche is good. I know a bloke who has only dealt in Jags for years. Still making money. You might try lease companies as although most auction the cars, there are disposal lists sent to favoured people prior to auction.
Best of luck,
Mike

Does anyone know the roads from Gretna across to Newton Stewart/Wigtown? I guess the A75/712.

I wonder how long to allow for that treck on a Saturday in August.

What about the Wigtown bay coast. Has anyone lived/visited there?

I think its the same rule that applies to "tarts cards" in phone boxes, i.e. you musn't use a sticky tape. That's why bin bags over gatsos are a good idea, as you can't be prosecuted for vandalism.
Big cardboard boxes are better because the rain makes them too heavy to be blown off.
