Someone asked what happened to the poor speeder. He never turned up for the trial and it went on in his absence as all witnesses were called....convicted. Made me feel even sicker about potentially being caught myself. Read more
Just looked at the thread down the pages, and I apologise for starting a new one but I thought it deserved flagging up here. In my opinion (usual disclaimer c**P) as with all things excise, the burden of proof is on the person making the declaration. i.e. you say you sent it, they say they never got it they win. I would suggest to anyone using SORN to use the Post Office's "Proof of Posting" scheme when sending ANYTHING to to DVLA, especially these days as a faliure to do anything that is a statutory requirement results in a fixed penalty through the post. I flagged that one up donkeys ages ago.
You are liable for a fixed penalty in the following circumstances:
You don't bother declaring SORN.
Post Office loses form
DVLA Droid mistakenly bins your form along with the one
on top which did get keyed.
DVLA Droid keys in second letter of registration incorrectly.
DVLA Droid failed to complete yesterday's batch, and the form
gets sweeped into the round file by the side of the desk.
As mentioned elsewhere, the only conclusive way to "do" SORN
is to fill in the V11 and take it down the Post Office and
get a receipt for £0.00.

Just been looking at an Owner's Handbook for a Rover 45, and noticed that they warn one to "Refrain from operating a telephone fitted with its own aerial inside the car", because it may affect the electronics. Is this a real danger, or is it just one of those catch-all phrases, giving Rover the opportunity to say "We did warn you!" if something happens to go wrong? Has anyone out there EVER come across any effect from (their passenger) using a mobile phone whilst travelling? Read more

Has any one actually proof read the Passat W8 brochure? Amongst the guff at the start on how the engine is made smoother, they apparently use new devices called Lancaster shafts. As i recall, they are called Lanchester shafts and rather than smoothing down any Volkswagen, Lancasters in fact stirred the whole factory up (ahem!) Read more
I got a load of crap from VW in the post today, probably added a tenner to the cost of a Passat.
Won't start in damp weather after 1 year.
What's the answer?Tried new plug leads and dist cap and rotor arm Read more
We had trouble with a Volvo 340 that refused to start in damp weather. I sprayed the electronic ignition module with Damp Start and cured the problem.
Damp Start used to be very poor as it flaked off after a time but the new stuff is much better.
You might want to try lifting the bonnet on a dark, damp night and look for ignition arcing. Then you should see the problem. ( If it is ignition, of course)
Can you lot help with a query?
While lying in bed this morning and having to listen to Mr next-door starting up and then revving his diesel van, I started wondering why a diesel engine makes more noise than a petrol one. I understand the basic principles of the two different engines types, but I can't figure out why one type would make more noise than the other.
Don't get me wrong I'm not anti diesel, being a driver of a '95 Passat tdi myself, I'd just like to know what makes this happen and having been a regular reader of the Backroom thought that the experts could help me with this one.
Thanks,

I have been driving a TDCi Focus over the last few weeks. It is very refined most of the time and has a decent amount of go - probably closest to a 1.6 petrol. It still sounds like a bag of spanners when cold and is pretty noisy at idle even when hot.
On an m-way it's fine but the fuel consumption goes up LOTS when shown a hill - according to Ford Fuel computer. Going up Beacon Hill near Amesbury on the A303 at a steady 70 gives figures of around 9mpg in 4th gear (it won't pull 5th up such a hill).
Hi all
Just thought I would leave a message of thanks for the advice regarding the screaching noise my corrado was making!
Turned out, as many of you suggested, to be the tensioner on the timing belt. Apparently I caught it in the nick of time!
Cheers

Yeah, I replaced the timing belt as well. Got all the others belts replaced while I was at it.

Was flicking through SKY the other day having watched some boring American Indy car racing and came across Motor TV (channel 429). Had some very boring prog on - do they ever show anything decent?
Also got a small question. I bought a "foot" pump from halfords which has a digi readout. On the box it said not to use the readings as definitive but just indicative!! How accurate are these digital readouts? Read more
Surfed into this myself, seems to be a French channel (or chanel 429 of course !) dubbed into English, generally moving wallpaper.
Has anyone found worthwhile info on the web to assist in stripping down diesel injector pumps?
I would normally fit an exchange unit if needed on a modern car but have a spare pump (u/s due to diesel leaks) for the old Land Rover and would like to have a fiddle.
The search engines don't seem to turn up much.
