Vaguely motoring related, and a little light relief from all the virus attacks, but MBRM delete if you think this is too 'product' biased...
I'm getting (albeit belatedly) a Playstation for the kids, and was wondering which car racing games the backroomers would suggest.
Of course I'll have to fully test drive anything before they're allowed out on the road. :o)
Thanks,

As recent discussions have been on Viruses i would like to ask if any of you are in the same situation as me.
My computer was recently attack by the Code Red and Nimda virus strains.
It seems windows NT/2000 are more open to attack by internet based viruses.
Apparently the Nimda strain was developed to attack computers which already had the code red virus.
I have Norton Antivirus 2001 which is regular updated but somehow i still managed to have Code red and Nimda viruses.
After Quarantining these viruses i downloaded the recommended security patches for windows 2000 professional and IE 5.5 , but could not use them because i did not have the latest service pack with either .To my astonishment Microsoft still charge for these service packs even when its their software which has serious security flaws.
Would any other type of business charge customers to fix faults which are clearly present in their products ?
Would a motor manufacturer who is recalling some cars say --
We have found a fault with fuel lines which we have modified and will replace free of charge, but YOU will have to buy a new fuel tank so we can attach them. Read more
That should be £30 of course!
Damn shift key is getting flakey!

All this dire gloom as I may have said before about cambelts nags at me. In Manila everyone is banned from driving one day a week between Monday and Friday based on the last number on the license plate. The authorities here being at least as intelligent as the UK ones appear to be(!) assume in their wisdom this will reduce the appalling traffic. Of course what happens is, because there is no public transport system worthy of the name, the average professional family simply buys a cheap third car with a license plate that differs from the other cars in the family, so nobody gets denied transport, and the problem is exacerbated with yet more vehicles on the road.
THe obvious result is that the poor old hack car gets much abuse and not much attention. On this basis we've had a little 1994 Mazda 323 floating around for many years. It has been an excellent little car and lives up to the blurb in HJ's description of it. Today it was my turn to use it and I see it is nudging 60k km. Say 40k miles. Does this one need a cambelt and if so should it be changed? I don't have a manual and the Mazda agents didn't know what I was talking about on the phone. Advice please and thanks in advance. Thank you folks. I hope I can it to the shop before the motor falls to bits.
I recently had a new clutch fitted on my 1988 Polo which has covered 135k+ miles. On the drive home it (well not the clutch specifically) was problematic. It would only engage 3rd and 5th gear if the lever was slammed in, and when my foot wasn't on the pedal there was a strange whistling noise, like an old fashioned kettle.
I took it back and they 'made an adjustment and moved the linkage over to the left.'
Take two, then, and it was great - light pedal, easy gearchange.
HOWEVER the pedal has become 'heavy.' This is after, say, 1000 miles on the outside. Clutches last longer than that so what could be the cause?
All I can think of is that the cable, under the strain of operating the original worn out clutch, snapped away from the pedal and the AA fitted a metal clamp of sorts, taken from the cable under the bonnet. This involved sacrificing some of the available cable. The consequence is that the biting point leaves little play between pedal and floor. But I can't see this causing a heavy clutch action. Also right now there is sort of a vibrating noise which seems to come from under the gear lever.
Excuse the non-technical language! Read more
It had a new cable 3 months ago.
Just been offered a 2002 Spec Focus 1.8 Ghia with Climate Control for £12739 by Broker4Cars. From shopping around this looks to be good, some of the supermarkets can beat the price for 2001 spec imports. According to the blurb this is a UK car with the Ford warranty.
Any experience of this supplier or any comments re the Focus? Read more

Readers who are looking at importation of a Toyota from Denmark might be interested to contact "Henrik Nielsen" . This seems to be close to one of the budget airline's Danish airport at Arhus.
I was interested in an Avensis Verso at the time and contacted several European Toyota dealers by post. Henrik was one of the few to reply and kept in touch, he got me a price as soon as he could (this took some time as it has only recently been announced) but by that time I had already purchased a Zafira locally.
I advised him and he was very courteous about it. I confirmed with him that it was OK to give out his name. Read more
Thanks Bob.

I have a 6 month old SRi 150. It has traction control (non switchable), but suffers understeer when cornering (especially on roundabouts). It also tends to lose grip when pulling away from junctions. Tyres look ok. Anybody suffered similar problems? Any ideas/suggestions for correction? Honest John suggested this might be too much 'toe-in' - would appreciate any comments on this theory. Read more
the older SRis were 2.0 and classed as 140 bhp. the new 2.2 are as you know Euro 4 emissions and ultra clean. the old 2.0 could trace its heritage back to the mid 80's i think.
interesting that you say about consumption, mine is similar around towns but has dropped to around 32 from 34-35 ish in the summer on a long run. think the air cleaner is getting a bit clogged as they dont replace until 40000.
mine was pipes as well. seems to be differant now, more metal sections and less rubber. so have i got too look forward to more probs with A/C i wonder. has HJ heard of probs with vauxhalls 2.2 i wonder. is it just a poor quality or specification issue.
getting a lot more wheeelspin this week since its been colder and road slimier. what tyre pressure do you use, my handbook doesnt list 2.2's, only 2.0 and 2.5 but as 2.2 is all alloy and so lighter am i using too hard a pressure at 31 psi.
think i'll put it to the forum.
Did anyone hear the phone in on R4 this lunchtime?
Just got the end of it but it seemed to be focussed on airlines and environment.
One woman asked the interviewee, (who I assume to be a Govt spokesman judging by the mealy mouthed nature of his answers) why if the environmental argument was valid for road transport did it not apply to airlines re duty free fuel, and why dual standards were being applied.
The answer was that two different situations apply. UK fuel duty is there because its a travel contained within the UK situation, whereas airlines are operating an import/export business and it needs the whole world to agree on duties.
My thoughts, what about domestic flights?
Next time I put thick end of £50's worth of diesel in how far do you think I would get with the line that I should not pay duty am on my way to a meeting re exporting UK products and importing some wine, beer & ciggies.
Really this makes my blood boil and is just typical of the lack of joined up thinking of this shower of incompetents in Government etc.
Sort of semi seriously. Read more
Was that last comment aimed at anyone particular in the cabinet?
i have just bought a CD called 'ROAD SKILLS' and found a part called 'honest johns car mart' where he tells you how to buy a car, but the best bit is a video player of honest john. i wonder if anybody else has ever bought this CD??? Read more
i got it from www.riva-4di.co.uk or you can ring 07000434237. its called - road skills, the ultimate driving tutor, its for drivers of all ages and skills, and endorsed by the IAM, and the DSA.
ANY of the gran turismo title. Very realistic, you need to complete progressively difficult licenses to be able to enter the higher races. Better cars are made ourchasable by winning races. Lots of.
If you get a playstation 2, get a package e.g. gt3, grand theft auto 2 and resident evil all for £250. Make sure the extra controller, memory card etc that you may want are included, the basic console just comes with a controller.
Finally if you want to hook it up to a hifi buy and optical cable for £10.
No wonder I have little left for the car..
