Hi,
A wheel receives a very, very severe clout and is put out of shape. Lets assume its tyre is badly damaged and consequently a brand new tyre is fitted to the, now distorted, wheel rim. The new tyre will, being flexible, follow the distorted shape of the rim - right?
If many thousands of miles later, say 10k, the wheel is changed to a brand new wheel and that same tyre refitted - will the tyre return to its supposed original shape or will it retain any of the distortion from the old wheel?
I know the easy thing to do is buy a new tyre, but 235/45/17 WR's arn't the cheapest of things to change out on a whim.
Does anyone have actual experience of this type of problem.
In anticipation ......

if you go into yahoo.co.uk then look at the news feature on the right of the page, it has some stories about the BADTRANS virus, it says that the person that made the virus can monitor what the keyboard is typing, so if you type in your credit card details, the virus sender can see what numbers are being used, so can steal the credit card number. Also worth trying is www.antivirus.com where there is a free online virus checker, repairer.
Just think, one day you could plug your car in to the manufacturers online system and get free diagnostics and electronic fixes & firmware updates!
Maybe not, I'll get my coat.
i have just had word from an internet friend in america, he says that people are putting viruses onto computers in garages, so that when you plug the engine diagnostic into the computer, the virus is put onto the diagnostic machine, then it can travel from the diagnostic system to the cars engine computer when the owner of the car has a service etc.
p.s. he works for general motors, and apparently GM are getting worried about this new kind of virus. Read more
so in about ten years we all have to worry (not me, because i will have an old banger, maybe i will have a ford focus because in ten years time these will be cheap cars)
Does anyone have any experience of suing an inspection service provider? My inspector didn't report that there were signs of major accident repairs and also missed other defects. If you have sued what was the outcome? Read more
hOO ISS THIZ OTHRE wATOSN ANYWAY?
Just wondering if anyone has not heard of the free text alerts to mobile phones from www.Genie.co.uk There are a variety, only footy you pay for, but the motoring info. alert usually comes about once a day.
(You can also send text messages as if from your mobile for free which can be a saving!) Read more
I tried the RAC version of this, which links to traffic master. I thought it would be useful for me, as I travel across the dreaded Thelwall Viaduct and M62 each day.
Costs £35 for the year, for which you get a text message, if there is a 10 min delay (or whatever delay you have asked to be told of). this simply tells you to ring #####. Pretty pointless if you ask me. I know it isn't safe to read texts if you are driving, but its just as bad to ring up too. Not only do they want £35 to send you messages, you also have to pay for the calls.
Not what it was cracked up to be.
Anyone else got any experience of this?

Jonathan
Just been reading an article about the new BMW 7 series 6 speed auto transmission 6HP26 also known as "myTronic6."
Quote from Vehicle Engineering and Design Nov2001.
?At the core is an ECU from Motorola?s PowerPC family. Each transmission produced at Saarbrucken goes through a battery of tests to establish its unique characteristics, which are then programmed into the chip, *creating a bespoke ECU for that specific transmission* .
?It?s the brain of the system? says Manfred Bek, senior manager control systems for ZF Getreibe car transmission division.?
I don?t know if vehicle manufacturers monitor internet sites such as this but I wonder if they do realise that folks, at least this one, do not want this level of complication. It is BMW?s intention to roll this technology down the range.
How will all you technical guys service and deal with fault finding on this stuff when the ECU is slightly different for each individual gearbox? Seems very clever but somewhat barmy to me. Read more
Dear Crazed Iiot,

Do you run a HT70? Or work for Goss?
Many thanks to all who reponded to my query re private sale of my motor. Happy to say the Civic has now been moved on, at a price of £5,000 - just a little less than I had been hoping for.
Also thanks to HJ for his published advice re how to prepare, advertise, answer phonetest drive, negotiate, accept payment, etc. All good stuff. Read more
or if you know what to look for, you can buy from an auction.
Has anyone had experiance of having to replace a catalytic converter?
My sons Mercedes 190E 2.0 needs a replacment soon and he has been
told the cost will be over £1000 !!!!!!!!!!!!

The giveaway for a broken substrate is a rattling from the catalyst itself or subsequent exhaust sections. Never seen one block and exhaust system (yet) although it is possible I guess. We have replaced perfectly serviceable exhaust centre and rear sections due to pieces of broken catalyst inside which have proved to be un-retrievable by the usual methods. (Holding it upside down!)

I know this seems a traditional weekly thread but it will be interesting to see if Driven (incl. the lovely Penny) manage to test the exotic motors on offer tonight in a Top Gear back-end out style or whether they stick to their usual, more professional style.
Could this be the ultimate test? Read more
Shame they chose a boring dark blue F1-shift Modena. I think a red, stick shift would have proven better to drive on a circuit and more desirable ( although probably not with the Jordan team).
The Porsche just does'nt 'do it' for me.Its just to clinical (German)
I would take the TVR and spend the remaining £ 50'000 pounds on track days.
who's the whizz kid on honda accord electrics?
I'm trying to wire up a pair of long range driving lights and looking for a suitable source circuit to trigger the relay so they go out when main beam is off
however it is proving tricky as there is a strange arrangement on the dip/main beam wiring there are seperate bulbs and the relay that switches from main to dip seems to switch the earth circuit not the supply circuit ........HELP PLEASE.

Mention of 3d-bit rims reminds me of a problem a Canadian friend had with his Voyager a few years ago. The rear tyres, which seemed to be true and undamaged, gradually developed a 3d-bit shape with about 7 or 8 faces rather than 12. I think it took specialists a lot of attempts before discovering just which bit of the suspension geometry was causing the problem. At any rate there wasn't any known damage to account for it.
