Can anyone advise or recommend the best way to get a centre 3 point belt installed in a 1990 Nissan Primera?

Due to the imminent arrival of a baby - I am trying to fit 3 children in the back of my Primera. I have been told that it is not possible to fit a central inertia reel belt because of the lack of a decent fitting point. I am loathe to rely on just the lap belt (either for securing a car seat, or for my eldest child with only a booster seat), but am not sure of the safety of a fixed 3 point belt?

Any advice (estimated costs?) would be very gratefully received. Read more

Make sure that the lap-belt is fitted beneath the protrusions of the pelvis - the illiac crests? And then pull the belt tightly. If the lap-belt is too high then, in a frontal impact, it may ride over the pelvis and cause damage to internal organs and the lumbar spine.

On a plane - or even with a three-point belt - make sure that all slack is taken up.

Does anyone know where I can get a Bosch immobiliser repaired ? I have spoken to Bosch but because it was an Bosch Australia import to the UK they do not support it, and a main dealer only wants to replace the whole thing at great cost. I am certain that there is not much wrong with it as the fault is intermitent. Read more

An intermittent fault with anything electronic is probably one of the worst faults you can have - will cost more in labour to find/sort than a replacement, as a rule of thumb. Could be simple such as loose wire/component, but could take hours(days!!) to find. Try to locate the wiring youself and clean contacts, after that you could be at the mercy of the current without a paddle. It could work out a lot cheaper to get the replacement unless you get lucky.

I've had a Citroen ZX TD Volcane for the last 85k miles having bought the car at 100K. It uses no oil at 185K (running synthetic diesel engine oil which incidentally is approx. 20% cheaper at French hypermarkets along with all PSA filters). But two problems -

1. The engine cuts out occasionally when decelerating to idle (at stop junctions etc);
2. There is a significant vibration coming from the front wheels which is road speed related (as opposed to engine speed). I've done the obvious (wheel balance, changed both driveshafts and N/s front wheel bearing without improvement). Before I change the other bearing any ideas? Second guessing at the answer is a gearbox failure resulting in vibration likely (no metallic pieces in drained g/box oil)? Apart from a slight whine the g/box is slick.

Other observations applying to all TD PSA engines is that the rads MUST be changed every three years or 90K miles (all rot then burst at base with catestrophic consequences at the head gasket). Consequently treat with as much respect as cam belt changes! Also has anyone experienced a disintergrating swirl chamber (akin to a dropped valve in consequences). I've seen it happen as the chambers are pressed into the head.... Read more

It is fun swinging about on the end of a bar doing those nuts up esp the rears on VW buses, plus its amusing seeing visitors faces when they see this sodding great socket hanging up on the wall. Mine went to a car boot by mistake, nearly caused a terminal rift in the family that one! :-(

I know this has been mentioned above, but even though the tyres are new it is still worth checking v v v carefully that they are round in the manner suggested above by David Woollard and others. I have been through this hoop several times and its has always been the tyres in the end.

We seem to have lots of problems with all sorts of vehicles with their Ignition leads failing. Rover, VW, SEAT, Vauxhall to name just a few that have an appetite for HT leads.
I'm not sure if your car has HT leads, it might have Direct Coil Ignition - if it does, best take it to a BMW specialist (not dealer!!) for diagnosis

I am looking to opt out of my company car scheme. I need a reliable saloon for between 20-30k miles per annum. The car will occasionally be used for towing a small car/boat. I am looking at 1997 + MY Ford Mondeo or a E34 5 series (535i?).

Fuel economy is irrelevant as private and businesspetrol is paid for. What sort of money should I be looking at, considering I will keep the car for about a year and will get a better deal buying from an auction Read more

Scale charges do not apply to privately owned vehicles. If an employer provides fuel for private use, the actual cost of the fuel provided is included in the annual declaration to the Inland Revenue (P11D) and is treated as if it were a cash bonus.

Scale charges only apply to company owned vehicles.

I bet Rebecca never thought this thread would run away.

Never ceases to amaze me what you can find on the net in a few minutes. Taken from a music website found with Dogpile Search Engine......

"It was 1962, and as a birthday gift I had been given a record token, my first ever. My young aunt was keen for me to get a Cliff Richards single with it, but I had other ideas. There used to be a pop programme on ITV where a panel of 'experts' reviewed newly released singles. The only memorable character was a girl who worked in a Brummy record shop whose phrase for a potential top seller ('Oill give it foive') became the catch phrase of a generation."

So now we know.

To replace our huge 4x4 i have been offered a 1990 230 estate with full history from new by a relative. Only problem is its done 156k miles. They want 3500 for it. It will need to be able to tow a small trailer with a formula ford on it, about 600kg. It has never towed before and looks really good. Opinions welcome Read more

I've just sold a 1990 7 seat 200TE with 123k for £2900.00 after being offered 2400-2600 in part ex. - unless the car is mint try and knock the price down a bit.

Hello

I am having problems sourcing parts for a Ford Sierra rear calliper. I have a Caterham 7 Supersprint (Ford 1700 - 1990 De-dion), which uses Sierra rear callipers. I have broken the bolt on the rear nearside calliper which the handbrake tension spring locates on. Caterham Parts will only sell me a complete new calliper and I do not have the time to liberate this part from an old Sierra in a breakers yard. Ford did produce a service kit which consisted of this bolt and the handbrake tension spring, however this has been discontinued.

Basically, the bolt has a 13mm head, with what looks like a small pulley welded directly underneath the bolt head (this is where the loop of the spring locates to the bolt). There is then about 25mm of shank and then the threaded part of the bolt, which is a slightly smaller diameter to the the shank. The threaded part of the bolt has broken off into the calliper.

Does anyone know of anywhere where I can get this bolt or where I would could get such a bolt made, I have the bolt from the other side for a pattern. I live in SW London, so ideally somewhere reasonably close to me or a company with mail-order facilities.

Many Thanks
